The main reason I won't be buying a PS4 or X1 anytime soon is an absolute lack of rpg proposals this year. PC, in contrast, will overload this year with old school rpgs a la Baldur's Gate .

1. Pillars of Eternity (renamed Project Eternity)

PC exclusive. Made by the kings of rpg genre, Obsidian. Heavily inspired in Baldur's Gate saga. Hand-drawn backgrounds. Party-based role-playing game with tactical pause-based real time combat. Will be a big contender for RPG GOTY.

http://eternity.obsidian.net/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKoDTzea79Y

2. Witcher 3

will probably come to PC first due to the past practices, see release dates on consoles for the enhanced edition to have an idea.

Will be a big contender for GOTY.

3. Divinity: Original Sin

http://www.divinityoriginalsin.com/

PC exclusive. Original Sin will be the next RPG in the Divinity universe. Isometric, single-player and cooperative multiplayer fantasy RPG with tactical turn-based combat, a highly interactive world and lots of choice and consequences. Great colourful 3d visuals.

4. Wasteland 2

PC exclusive. An official sequel to the game Fallout 1/2 took inspiration from. From Brian Fargo, the father of Fallout 1 and 2.

Party-based role-playing game with tactical turn-based combat.

5. The Banner Saga

http://stoicstudio.com/

PC exclusive. A Viking-themed tactical role-playing video game under development by Stoic, a trio of indie game developers formerly of BioWare. Great artsy visuals.

6. Age of Wonders 3

PC exclusive. What can be better than a turn based RPG. A turn based strategy RPG.with tons of monsters to command, spells to cast and magic items to acquire. **** yeh. Age of Wonders is back.

7. Diablo: Reaper of Souls

Won't be released on last gen consoles. Won't be released on X1. Won't be released on PS4 in 2014. Will Be a PC excluisive at least for a year or so.

It seems like Blizzard's guys are pedalling back all the bad decisions they made with Diablo 3.

AH will be gone. Stats points will be back and massive loot will be back as well.

8. Grim Dawn

http://www.grimdawn.com/

Old school Diablo-style action RPG, from the creators of Titan Quest. It’s set in a grim, dark but highly detailed medieval fantasy world called Cairn, where humans are on the brink of extinction. You’ll be able to mix and match skills from five available classes over 75 levels. Environments are destructible and prone to dynamic outbursts from the weather.

9. Blackguards

http://www.blackguards-game.com/

http://store.steampowered.com/app/249650/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsSjvNRCq4I#t=190

PC exclusive. A turn-based tactical RPG, based on the Dark Eye roleplaying system, by Daedalic Entertainment. Daedalic Entertainment is probably the best classic point&click adventure maker in the world now, who gave us Edna & Harvey, The Whispered World, A New Beginning, Deponia saga and The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav among other excellent games. So it's pretty exciting to try a turn-based RPG from them.

My friend i feel very much Obsidian are similar in character to Viggo Mortison in Lord Of The Rings. For many years, they have mearly been the ranger, strider. Now, this year,. the king will return and the sword will be reforged.

I don't agree with that.

Expect the Witcher 3 release to have a marketing budget in the 10's of millions. Because of this there is no way they will stagger the release date.

Only good game out of those is the Witcher 3.

Obsidian is only good at ruining other franchises and making half finished and buggy games

CD Project were always releasing Enhanced Edition for their games... for free. If they release Witcher 3 on consoles too soon, they will have to pay additionally for releasing a free expansion on PS4 and X1. Unless they had made a deal with Microsoft and Sony regarding updates, I don't see CD Project willing to pay twice for releasing Witcher 3 content on consoles. In comparison, on Steam, the developers pay nothing for releasing updates and /or expansions.

Obsidian produced Neverwinter Nights 2 with its awesome Mask of the Betrayer. They are the kings of old school rpg since Bioware had stopped being it. They are also developing South Park rpg which looks just awesome. In Obsidian we trust.

I don't know why this needs to be a PC vs console thread. All platforms will have tons (and mostly the same) of RPGs this year. The difference is the CRPG's being PC only.

Add:

Dark Souls 2

Dragon Age

South Park

Lords of the Fallen (maybe)

I think you're pretty set whether you want to play RPGs on PC or console. PC/console share most major RPGs anyway these days. I suspect that with the porting from consoles to PC being much easier this generation, PC will also get Final Fantasy 15 at some point.

I only put exclusives and timed exclusives, or else the list would be too long.

Furthermore, Final Fantasy 15 and Kindom's Heart 3 won't probably be released this year. Kindom's Heart 3 is not released this year for sure. I made the list for 2014 only. So far, X1 and PS4 have nothing to offer from RPG department this year except for some cross-gen multiplats.

@dommeus: Torment. PoE is real time with pause, like Baldurs Gate, or Dragon Age. PoE developed by Obsidian, Torment by inXile (also doing Wasteland 2). Not crazy about Torment being turn based either.

I want futuristic RPGs. I'm burned out on sword and shield, the medieval scene (plus no electricity), along with WW2 and modern warfare FPS games.

To hell with The Witcher 3. I want Cyberpunk 2077.

Actually he's right. Last year was quite dry on RPG for PC.

The only ones that come to my mind were The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Shadowrun, Path of Exile and a few early accesses. This is it.

Sadly, PS3 and 3ds had better RPGs last year than PC, excluding Path of Exile, of course.

PS3 got

Tales of Xillia

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

and

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Ok. Let's not exaggerate. PS3 did have better traditional RPGs, PC did have a really good one, Path of Exile.

But PC stays as the best platform for RPGs thanks to its backward compatibity and emulation capacity. Despite the last year was dry on rpgs for PC, I sill was able to play my eternal RPG classics such as neverwinter saga, Xenoblade Chronicles of Wii, and my JRPGs from PS2. PC is always the best for RPG. It has all.

Shadowrun Returns was also a pretty good one last year, even more so now with all the amazing usermade content, there´s some full lenght stories already that are ven better than the default game.

They might be prone to bugs, but they know how to make an RPG. The much-maligned Alpha Protocol offered me lots more actual role-playing than Mass Effect.

Seems PC gamers would have their hands full trying out these games, PC's always have the best exclusives, and the RPG genre is no exception.

Unfortunately I will also have to pick up a PS4 eventually to pick up FF15. I cant possibly skip it.

Personal trust...lol. Most of those aren't even playable and some of them that are (like Wasteland) have received some negative feedback as well. Regarding MMX though despite some negative feedback (like fricken every game doesn't get some) it's actually pretty positive. Heck, even the RPGCodex is pretty positive on it.

Blackguards has really surprised people too, most didn't give it that much thought but it turned out the combat/tactics and character development is quite deep and fun. The biggest complaints on Steam are from noobs who think the game is too hard.

Also I think Grimrock 2 might come out this year and I think the Berlin campaign for Shadowrun (which should be better than the 1st campaign) will also come this year.

Don't buy early access, as the official release will be arround 20 bucks. Right now the early access is 60 bucks because they don't want to anger early Kickstarter supporters.

FF15 will propbably be released in 2015, so you have time.
