@mdign:

1- You still haven't proved that a GPU with 2 GB of VRAM can max games at 4K with a benchmark. Those benches I linked and you quoted show that more than 3 GB is required in those games.

2- You started the e peen contest. But you lost. But since you claimed you won "based on the information you were given" that means you are in the clear right?

3- I can prove that games don't run well at 4K on my hardware. You claim that it can. Doesn't it make sense that whoever is running the best hardware and is scoring the best in benchmarks is right?

4- You claim that 2 gb of vram is enough to max games at 4K. In that benchmark I posted every card is using more than 2 gb of vram. How can you even attempt to use that bench to prove you're right? Spoiler alert! I own a gtx 690 that couldn't run titanfall or Watch Dogs at 1440p at max settings. The texture packs require more vram even at 1080p. 2 gb of vram? Nice try.

The thing I noticed when going over my max vram with my old card is I got a lot of what looked like micro stuttering in games, which I don't think would show up in most benchmarks.

Maybe in metro last light's.

Something like this:

vs something like this:

The average and minimum framerates are pretty close, but looking at the graph you can see the real impact. (Note: These dips were related to a processor issue and not vram, I'm just using these to illustrate what I'm describing)

@topgunmv: That game is all over the place. With enemies on screen the frame rate goes nuts for me when physx is enabled. (I am aware of the bug) When everyone is dead I am 60+ fps but things go south when the bad guys show up.

Hopefully things get worked out.

Disabling core parking in windows fixed it for me.

Personally, I don't think we're there yet. Maybe in a few years it will be easier, but not right now. As long as games are HD I don't really give a crap what resolution is being used. 720, 900, 1080, whatever. As long as it isn't under 720 I don't really care.

4k is uninteresting until 85" 4k OLED TV's are affordable.

@mdign:

I'm just gonna leave it at this. You claim you can play most games at 4K. Your examples are CS GO, Injustice, Skyrim as well as much older games like PS2, Wii and Gamecube titles. If that is all you want to play at 4K fine.

Games like Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Metro 2033/Last Light, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, Titanfall, Batman Arkham City/Origins do not run well on anything less than a R9 290X crossfire set up at 4K. (and still not 60fps) And this list will only get bigger in the future. There is no 2 GB card, Nvidia or AMD in sli/crossfire that runs these games well at 4K. The R9 270 (a 2 GB card) in crossfire doesn't even average 60 fps in many of these current games maxed in 1080p. So in 4K the games would be downright unplayable.

You may be running some games well at 4K with 2 2GB cards. But I'm not seeing much evidence that any 2GB setup can handle games at 1440p let alone 4K. And my experience with a GTX 690, which is a dual GPU card (pretty much 2 2GB 680's in sli) back that up. You have offered evidence that proves otherwise in a couple of games. I have posted benchmarks and can post more that show more than a dozen games will not run well at 4K without something like a 780ti sli or greater. So I still feel that your statement that you can max most games at 4K is incorrect. And I apologize for any insults or tension in our interaction. I don't mind continuing this debate/conversation but I don't want to do it in a disrespectful manner. Most, if not all of that was my doing and I apologize.

Console gaming: usually 1080 or 60 fps, not both. Ouch.

With inferior graphics and unable to maintain nor 60 or 30 fps at all times.

Meh, I aint going for 4K until we either have:

1. a 55" 4K OLED TV for $2000

2. a Sony HW55/JVC X500 successor with native 4K resolution, they currently cost roughly $4000-5000 today and are 1080p (4K with e-shift for JVC) so when they get updated with improved contrast, black levels, lumens AND 4K instead of 1080p while remaining in the same price range, then it's time to upgrade.

Until those times come, all gaming/movies will be done on my 1080p Pioneer Kuro (9th generation)

I think g-sync will be a very useful technology in the years ahead.
