Panzer Dragoons 1&2 get a Remake

Tasty news for Dragspoon fans!

'Sega's classic on-rails shooters Panzer Dragoon 1&2 are getting the remake treatment courtesy of Polish publisher Forever Entertainment.

We don't know too much about it, beyond that the first instalment is planned for unspecified platforms before the end of next year.

Forever Entertainment did provide a brief statement (via Gematsu - thanks for the spot!). "The new version of the game will be characterised by a completely new graphics compatible with today's standards and several modifications of the game," it says.

Crimson Dragon launched on X1 about 4 years ago and could considered a "beloved IP" by many so maybe these remakes are leading up to the announcement that Sega is next to be acquired by MS with a New PD being developed as a Win10 exclusive. :o

Panzer was the first game I played with that generation and it blew me away. Can't say I'd want to sully that memory through trying it again mind you, its just fine as it is.

Call me when they remake Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Cool, I'd hate to see such an effort only get a simple higher resolution emulation, though that worked fine with Orta on XB1, these games being as dated as they are won't hold up well.

Those would be fun to play again and I really enjoyed those games in the past. I would be interested to see how the gameplay style still holds up.

Day one as long as they do it right. Like Crash, Spyro type remakes.

SOTC, Crash, and Spyro have all raised the bar on these remakes and remasters.

I hope it can match those.

Glad Sega is digging deeper into their franchises. They are so so much more than Sonic (as much as I like 2D Sonic).

Regardless of whether or not this is Saga, it's a promising development that it may be in the works as well. The only thing that would present a problem is the source code (if rumors are to be believed) has been lost. I wouldn't lose all hope though, this is good news any way you cut it.

Missed out on these the first time around and always regretted it. Hope they are fully fledged remakes not half arsed cash ins.

Eh, I think you're safe as I was really reaching on that hypothetical but just for SW purposes. :P

I'm not a software engineer or anything, but I don't believe it's as simple as cracking a disc and pulling out the source code. It would be more like recreating the blueprints for a car by deconstructing the end product piece by piece to see how it's been built. Reverse engineering it. I suppose it could be emulated?

Who knows if Sega's going to be bothered to do that, and considering how niche Saga was (it was very limited in production at its release), it's up in the air. I'd be very surprised (and ecstatic) if we see it, but at least Sega's paying attention to the franchise. That's always hopeful.

Give them the Spyro treatment and it will print money, I say.

Panzer Dragoon II is the single best on rails shooter ever made. I've beaten that game on my Sega Saturn more times than I can count easily over 50.

I'd gladly show my support for this if they do it justice.

These games need to be remastered simply to fix the draw distances and pop-in. Literally feet away, it’s painful to play them today.

@MirkoS77: Sega have been known to neglect / not give a sh*t about old games and probably don't even read western press. Although they did cancel the Bare Knuckle remake but then they forgot to ask before selling it...

A third party remake will probably be a simple 3d engine with high res textures so there is a fair possibility the original code will be lost as the the Sega ages collection so crucial gameplay aspects like hit boxes, response times and controls might deviate.

They will either need higher resolution images from Sega if they want to keep the original textures or redraw them themselves which if they do, will be dependant on the talent of their in house texture artist/s.

So really anything could happen but I'm guessing it will be a bit like B grade quality.

Maybe it wasn’t great in hindsight tbh I can’t recall much about it. I just remember hiring out a Saturn and thinking we’ve finally caught up - goodbye arcades, we had some fun times together. There’s no point revisiting the game for me, but some people may get something out of it I guess :/
