Carmack: PCs not as important as consoles

ID Software's John Carmack has put out a thought that that the PC platform is not as important as the consoles. He notes that that PC sales numbers are just what they used to be in terms of games and also the PC is more like the junior partner in ID's cross platform strategy.

Quote:
As primarily a developer on the PC, few know the shifts in the industry as well as id Software. Constantly are doom-and-gloom reports about how the PC is falling to the wayside of consoles, some even blaming piracy. Carmack isn't so convinced: "Well, it's hard to second guess exactly what the reasons are. You can say piracy. You can say user migration. But the ground truth is just that the sales numbers on the PC are not what they used to be and are not what they are on the consoles."

Never is the shift from PC to console more abundantly clear than when Carmack asserts, "We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we're not making decision around the PC. It's probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC."

Other sources claim that PC Gaming has been growing much faster than console gaming as well as it making in much more revenue. I guess those statements have been pure Bull all along : (

Who cares what John Carmack thinks? Hermits should only start worrying if someone like Will Wright says this.

Not up to console numbers? I never undsertood this, most high profile console titles only sell 1-2 million just like PC's ... but then both system types have thier megations which go 5 million +...

Its more of a case, that these shooter developers are whining about sales, because of what thye seen Halo 3 and CoD4 get..... and Unrealistically expect to earn as much as them?

Crytek whining about 2 Million sales? of a game with terrible online and steep system requirments?....

These people are not experts in the financial field.

Ironically most of the poor sales are from Ports 6 months+ later.

so tell me ID .... Quake Wars was a big failure on the consoles, whats your excuse now? "TEH PC PIRATES!111" .... or EPIC GAMES .... when PC version despite bad feedback has sold more on PC?

Oh and then theres Valve , which stated that the PC version of Orange Box sold over 3x the copies of the 360/PS3 combined despite PC gamers already having Half-life 2 ect? .... do you see them complaining?

Or STALKER selling 2 million with no advertisment?....

Without PCs for gaming the console industry would have to subsidize the hardware industry. I don't know about you, but I DO NOT want Microsoft's hand in the cookie jar releasing hardware. No, no, no, and no.

In what world? A lot of people have been complaininga bout Quake Wars for quite some time. The hit registry was crap, the internet code was lacking, it was a contrived version of Battlefield, the gun sounds sucked, etc.

Is this true though? i mean yeah, if you add the figures up from the dawn of time (or dawn of PC gaming)

Maybe what his is saying that overall, in recent times, console games are selling better? So if you took a popular multiplat game, COD4 say - how many did that sell on each platform? Maybe its selling better on console?

This is not a statement...its a query and a question.

EXACTLY. I just watched a 20 minute interview with Carmack on gamevideos and he really just says selling on PCs AND consoles is the best way, but the games are better on PC's. He isn't anti-PC at all. VandalVideo, you ought to watch his interview. He really isn't biased like the TC misquotes him to be.

According to the PCGA, the PC accounted for 30% of the entire software sales industry, which includes over five platforms in the year 2007.

Make a good game, and I'll buy it. Seriously, PC market is always few steps ahead of console market, you can't expect a last gen game to be a hit on PC while it might be that on consoles. We've been playing these games on PC for 10 years now, that rehash crap might sell on console for a while, but eventually consolites start demanding something new as well and then these fossils will be out of luck. Or maybe they'll just move to handhelds.

And on another note, this PC-trash speak is never smart from a dev, we hermits are very sensitive, suck us up like Blizzard, Valve and Stardock do and we'll return the favor. Go the CliffyB route and your games are forever doomed on PC, no pun included.

So the 360 has a HANDFUL of 5+ million sellers, so what? so does the PC in recent years, and dont go sprouting any "SIms and WoW are not games   " crap because I will reply with "then what is Halo/gears?..." .

WOTLK , Starcraft, Spore and Diablo will break 5 million each, mark my words.

Do I r eally have to explain it? Carmack is lashing out at the PC industry because his games, which he hasn't put out a true game in quite some time, aren't selling well.

According to the PCGA, the PC accounted for 30% of the entire software sales industry, which includes over five platforms in the year 2007.Vandalvideo

again though, i'm thinking that might be a handful of PC titles shifting ALOT of software units - so a handful of companies making alot of money. Where as devs as a whole as selling more units on console?

Again this is just a theory. I just don't know why a guy would say this, if he didn't think it. What does he have to gain? unless he is a secret system wars lemming/cow? It just doen't have sense to me. He just think think this/know this to be true?

You realize the UK PC Bioshock version practically basket tossed the 360 one right?

Really? By how much?

If it did, then that's probably the best argument I've ever heard in the history of System Wars...

You're right, its just a theory. The fact of the matter is that the PC has the single highest grossing platform, and has a humongous installed user base according to the PCGA and Microsoft. PC games can easily sell well, its a matter of making games that appeal to the audience.

Maybe the numbers are higher on pc but falling year by year, where as console is a lower number but increasing year by year?

Its just this is not the first report I have heard about dropping PC sales.

Thats the thing, there is no PC Gaming market, just a 'software' market. WoW and Photoshop sales for example are included into one number.

Wroooong. The NPD and PCGA don't include regular software sales. It is strictly games.

I remember hermits also saying Bioshock was dumbed down console trash yet they praise it when its in their favor.

Pretty desperate tactics, these PC fanlads use.

NPD had the proper figure of only 14% total max possible market share. PCGA is biased and uncredible.
