OtherOS possibly the greatest feature a console could ever have?

Fanboys are all about them shitty exclusives that no one cares about, but imagine if sony reintroduced OtherOS functionality with the PS5 and it could seamlessly dual boot other OSes (linux distros, windows any x86-64 OS really), had a semi decent cpu (8 core ryzen based with at least 2.5-3Ghz all core turbo) at a fair price point and AMD actually published the GPU drivers for it.

It wouldn't be a brick in your living room that can only run software from sony's walled of garden, you could play most PC games, all your games from previous gens (including modern systems like WiiU and ps3 and maybe the Switch), you could run Kodi on it, you could use it for work etc.

For me it would be a system selling feature that could get me to buy a console again, how interested would you guys be in a feature like this?

(and yes i'm aware that the chances of sony bringing back this feature are slim to none)

Too much work. Heck, for some, even getting up to swap a disc is too much work. ;)

Heh. Sony actually just settled a class-action suit for removing the option. I could have gotten like $30 for it, but decided not to waive my right to sue them at a later date ;)

I had some fun messing around with it when I got my PS3 at launch.

Wasn't it more like $65?

I feel like OtherOS on the PS3 was held back by the weak CPU lack of drivers for the GPU and the fact that the CPU was Power Architecture based, so it couldn't run most existing relevant software that your average guy would use.

Like this you'd have a cheap, slim HTPC with decent performance/cost ratio, that has access to the sony store.

It was a nice feature but struggled because of the hardware it was using. I really hope Sony goes back to something like it in the feature. I think Sony is in a position where they can develop quite a few tools for gaming in Linux. That would be a nice contribution.

If I wanted a gaming pc I'd build/buy one, let consoles be consoles.

If Microsoft's rumored plan to charge monthly fees for Win10 service is true then linux won't need PS5 to get a boost in the gaming scene

So basically you just want a PC that can play Sony exclusives. But you say that nobody cares about Sony exclusives, so what's the point?

Do you really think Microsoft is stupid enough to put a gun to their own head like that? Businesses might stick with Windows, but it would all but kill their home desktop market.

@dzimm: I've been with MS since DOS and have been happy enough. But they are already beta testing that with Windows 7. Seems benign enough given how ancient that OS is, but they are always looking for new ways to monetize and they've already done exactly that with their Office product.

Never say never

Nope i couldn't care less about the exclusives, but having access to an additional online store is never a bad thing (granted i haven't used sonys store in like 5-6 years so i don't know how good the deals are), +as i said previously even without the access to sonys store it could still be a great cheap HTPC.
