Original Xbox vs. The Wii - A graphical comparison (No 56k!) *NOW UPDATED!*

I thought it would be interesting to compare the two, so I did. I tried to be as unbiased as possible and tried to attain the best quality pictures I could. Now with the Xbox being as old as it is, are you satisfied with the Wii's graphics?

That conker and SMG comparison is not fair.

Anyway Xbox and Wii graphics cant be directly compared. Wii games tend not to go for the realistic approach which the original Xbox did and quite alot. Its like comparing cel shaded wiith realistic graphics.

I wouldve also added in pics from Mechassault 2(xbox) and Madworld(wii) though tbh with you.

Man ppl seem to love these though I don't know why, I think wii games look sharper but then i'm not a great judge.

Gusty Garden Galaxy. :D

This is the fairest comparison I've seen in awhile. There doesn't look like there's much fishing for good/bad screens here.

They look pretty much the same if you ask me. In some games the Wii is sharper, in some, the Xbox.

The Conduit looks better than Riddick, but Ninja Gaiden Black beats the crap out of Zelda. And no, those aren't bad shots of Zelda, I've got a Wii and I've played TP. It looks like that.

SMG looks better than that though.

Halo 2 beats most of the other games on there, but I don't recall it looking THAT good on my TV...

No More Heroes looks the same as the other one for the most part.

ah that explains it, I never really did too much in Gusty Gardens, it was my least favorite level as I sucked at getting around in it :P

This doesn't work.

You have to take a camera and shoot both console games for real on the same TV to tell an actual difference. Screenshots NEVER look like the real game, either they are too jaggy because the screen was designed for TV's and not computer screens, or because the developer changes the screen with special effects to make it look better than it actually does.

Until somebody does this, I won't take this thread seriously. Besides, just by those screens, Wii wins easily, although the differences aren't as big as you would expect.

Why did you post Twilight Princess and RE:4 in your Wii section? They are both Gamecube ports. Also, how in the world is The Conduit in this discussion among the likes of SMG, Ninja Gaiden, Metroid Prime 3, etc?

Prime 3 is gorgeous in motion. The rest are more or less just on par with their Xbox counterparts (like RE4/Conduit/TP). The only games that really show a huge improvement are SMG and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (given there's more going on screen, more advanced lighting, better textures, etc. than DOA3).

What a horribly slanted comparison. Even if I think the Xbox has the hand a comparison like this isn't wroth taking seriously.

I think Wii has better graphics, but not by much.

Twilight Princess looks terrible in those shots. It's looks a lot better on my TV. Same goes for Metriod Prime 3: Corruption and The Conduit.

I'd say that Brawl and SMG looked better than the Xbox game they were being compared against, but that Xbox won every other comparison.

Last gen consoles (ps2/xbox/GC/Wii) looks so bad on HDTV it makes my eyes bleed. I am so happy we are playing HD games but we still see the evil jaggies which i hope will be gone next gen with x8 AA+Syferonik

Jaggies aren't noticable to me unless you are like 3inchs away just looking for them.

We need 480p direct feed screenshots, 480i won't cut it for the best picture quality, and those Xbox games supported 480p and a few did 720p from what I read.

I apologize for the not the best Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess shots. I 100% agree that there are better shots, I just got kind of lazy. :P Along with all of Gamespot's quirks, it took me a long enough time to get the pictures I did lol.

Damn me! I did forget Monster Hunter - that game looks gorgeous. While doing the comparison though, I tried to stick with titles that already came out.

The reason I used TP and Resident Evil 4 is because IMO they are two quality looking titles on the Wii. If anyone has anymore games that look amazing on the Wii let me know - I know I'm forgetting some good ones!

With anymore knowledge, I'd love to improve the comparison because I was under a bit of a time constraint (along with being sort of lazy).

both consoles CPUs are clocked near each other, both GPUs are clocked near each other, Factor 5 said GCN CPU could do everything Xbox P3 could do so its reasonable to think the Wii can do more since its the same CPU just clocked higher

the Wii has 24MB more system RAM than the Xbox

if nintendo waves the hardware race flag so much for 3 years and says the wii isn't meant for hardware why keep bringing up this dead horse?

Yes it does, if nintendo allowed them to go to 30fps, the graphics could be better due to the wii have more time to render the scene. We are about BEST looking games, funny enough that means pretty much all 60fps for the wii.

I hate it when games aren't in 60fps. That has became a law for me. Thats why I lost all interest in the Conduit, when they said that it was in 30fps. The games was also bad, and that contributed more though.

It still goes both ways. But in reality, it's the final product that matters. That's the only thing I can compare.

Well that's your eyes noticing the difference. :P

They get used to seeing something for so long, and then they have to adjust. When you play Halo for a long time, you don't even notice anymore. Our damn eyes play tricks on us man!
