Was hyped as the next Skyrim. I believe it has currently sold ~10 million copies vs. Skyrim that have sold ~60 million. Starfield has probably sold more now than Skyrim had at this point. The game is not like Skyrim as hyped, it's soulless.
I'd say the game flopped, score wise and lore wise. It's selling really well, though. Doubt MS and Bethesda thinks it's a flop.

It got a 7 from the two largest video game reviewers and a 7.5 from the biggest PC reviewer.
I knew this years ago it wouldn't be nominated (Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 told me everything I needed to know) but it was pretty mcuh confirmed the first day of its reviews that it wasn't getting nominated.

We're talking 12-13 years ago. And the reason why those two didn't win squat isn't because of some tin foil hat propaganda, its because there were way better games those years (Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mass Effect 2, Dark Souls, Arkham City, TES V: Skyrim, Portal 2, etc)
Starfield isn't a particularly great game - its natural that it was omitted from the nominees. There are many more deserving games that could have been nominated (FF16, Lies of P, Armoured Core VI etc) but they did not make top 6.
Sony at one point made 4 out of the last 5 GOTY winners. Microsoft's one and only "consensus" GOTY was in 2001 - 22 years ago. then again I am not sure if it won more GOTYs than GTA 3. It was certainly top 3 and won many GOTY awards from major sites.
Sony, FromSoft and Nintendo win GOTY every single year, not because they are called Sony, FromSoft and Nintendo but because they make the best games, every single year. (this year its BG3 edging Nintendo's Zelda:TOTK)
The industry as a whole hated the idea of a US based software dev especially one as yuuuge as MS getting in the HW gaming biz and it has shown ever since 2001.

They're as Disingenuous as can be and I Hate that so much in any situation but luckily this is just about VG's.

I'm way behind on my xbox catalog. I'm still working on gears 4. I got gears 5 and halo infinite on deck. To be honest though, I don't think Xbox has been snubbed. Lots of their games are "fine" to good. Microsoft knew that and now buy publishers to fill though void of their lackluster efforts. They'll have at least one nomination next year.
The thing is... Xbox ain't really been putting out a lot of must have exclusives. Though they have potential with Fable. Fable was a good series and with some love, can be a great game.

It was review bombed by Sony Pony "gaming journalists".
Its not a good game. Its a 6/10 title that deserves a 7/10 on a good day. But if you're experienced with Bethesda titles, and expected improvements on their 20+ years old formula, i think this game is more of a 5/10 than anything else.
It doesn't deserve anything else but to remind Badthesda how far they've fallen.
@blamix: Exactly. Starfield is barely in the top 60 highest rated game on metacritic of 2023. You could actually argue that if the TGA decided to allow 50+ nominations for the GOTY, Starfield still wouldn't be nominated.
