NPD: Switch sales outnumber PS4

There's more to Matt's thread, but wow! Nintendo really came back after Wii U struggles, like striking back in retaliation after getting kicked down.

What is it with Nintendo and bouncing back they went from the GameCube to Wii from the Wii u to the switch. They always find a way.

After gamecube the Wii was a huge success too, so it's not the first time Nintendo pulled this off. And I don't get why people have so little faith in a gaming company being a company about gaming.

Wait Switch surpassed PS4 hardware sales in the US..... No one saw this coming last gen.

All these sales and Splatoon 3 is the big title for holidays. Nintendo doesn't respect their fans.

If you combined the Wii and Nintendo handheld sales of that gen much like the Switch is a combined both handheld and console, these sales figures are not the least bit surprising. :P

Wow, Xbox has generated the most revenue in 2022 so far according to NPD. PS5 units sold are last place in NPD as well. Yikes.

Very impressive indeed. Congrats to Nintendo for really nailing it with the Switch. Love the system myself with a lot of great games currently and more that are coming out in the future.

Wii and 360 are next on Switch's list.

Maybe Nintendo learned what happens when you stop supporting a console (Wii) with years of life remaining.

I remember more people buying the Switch during lockdown in 2020-21 and it was selling out faster than the PS4 at the time.

Wow i didnt realise the weight of sales for the 360 in the USA compared to other regions. 38 odd million..wow. i did a double take when i saw that the switch had not beaten the 360 yet in the sales department.

Anywho fair dues to nintendo. It's a solid system and a great complimentary device. Bring on Xenoblade 3 in july (and please be good).

Still i am kinda itching to see what they have up their sleeve for their next system. Also will they try and set up a second pillar? all their eggs are in one basket at the moment which has its issues.

They're not all in one basket. They have mobile, and they're expanding outside of gaming.

You're also wrong. Splatoon 3 will sell millions of copies, but it'll be massively eclipsed in sales by Pokemon.

Come to think of it, 39 Switch games sold over a million copies last year, and Nintendo has tons more games coming out this year, so you'd imagine that they could break records in software sales again this year.

Massively popular game in every kindergarten😱Couldn't care less what a 7yo plays. To me, Splatoon is as relevant as Bugsnax, so imagine Bugsnax being your biggest title of holidays. Ouch.

I feel like the demand would have been the same with or without the pandemic.

@Pedro: The pandemic hurt the Switch, Switch is a socializing console. You play it at the mall, the movies, the airport, on vacation, at your grandmas house. You play it in a ton of places that had been shut down. Had we had no pandemic Switch would have already surpassed NDS. 😊

Splatoon as a strong and healthy competitive scene in japan. The movement mechanics in those games give them quite a bit of depth.

The previous game sold 11 million copies (rounded up). Splatoon is quite a big deal.

While it isnt as big of a deal as God of War Ragnarok, the Switch also has far more coming out, while the POS5 has nothing but that left. Xenoblade 3, Mario Strikes, Fire Emblem Three Hopes, Pokemon Gen 9. Switch Owners have plenty to look forward to.

At least GoW:R wont leave be completely forgotten like Horizon Forbidden West was.

These PS5 production issues are nuts. They are going to finish in 3rd in 2022 and their overall unit sales lead vs Xbox will vanish. There’s buzz that PS is working on a hardware revision. I’m sure it’s in response to these production issues, and not the mid-gen refresh. Maybe making that giant ass vagina router wasn’t the best idea…

Sony definitely has more competition from both Nintendo and Xbox this gen, quite the opposite of their position much of the 8th gen.

I don't think this gets talked about enough....but you can't get NEW PS4's either with all the supply chain issues.

I just went to my local best buy looking for one, and they flat out told me they haven't gotten any in a while and have no idea when or if they will come back in stock.

This really hurts the PS4....as it never got the "discounted" availability previous consoles did. Like the $199 permanent price point. Heck PS4 is still $299 and $399 for the Pro. At this point Sony is just focusing on the PS5.

I just feel bad for late adopters who rely on the consoles being discounted to finally jump in. Even used PS4s are priced almost new. At least in a store

@simple-facts: well we all know one thing, Xbox isn't winning anything outside of these short term wins from the shortage. Also, Switch is a handheld. Sony still has the top 2 spots for home console sales.

Any way more on topic- Switch has been a mixed bag for me (and of course many others have already pointed out its flaws). I honestly feel like it has not reached its potential. I think it really just shows the power of Nintendo's biggest franchises.

Switch Lite and Switch are all part of the same tree. I understand that you are trying your best to spin this in Sony's favor but it is time to accept the fact that the Switch is dominating.
