Halfway through 2011, Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. console market, selling more units in the U.S. than any other console for 12 of the past 13 months. Even while console and software sales across the industry have slowed, as often happens in the summer, Xbox 360 continues growing, staying on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history in the sixth year of its lifecycle.

Holding 48% share of the overall current-generation console market share, Xbox 360 sold 507,000 units in June (what the holy ****?), selling nearly twice as many units as other current-generation platforms and maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. Additionally, Xbox 360 was the only console in the U.S. to show year-over-year growth in the month of June. (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)
Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software and accessories) reached $350 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)
During the month of June, three of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: "L.A. Noire," "Duke Nukem Forever," and "Call of Duty: Black Ops." (Source: NPD Group, June 2011)

With the holiday season and major launches just around the corner, the second half of 2011 promises to make Xbox 360 history. The size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year and Xbox will bring new partnerships like UFC and Disney to the platform as well as blockbuster games, movies, music and TV together in one place. We expect Xbox 360 to maintain its lead and to be number one worldwide by the end of the year, selling more hardware units than PlayStation and Wii. Microsoft PR

According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation continues to see growth in software with a strong demand for exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles. The recently launched inFAMOUS 2 was the #1 software SKU in June. In addition, momentum is accelerating with the upcoming fall releases of Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 on the horizon.

This week the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta surpassed 1.5 million unique players, demonstrating the strength of the PlayStation platform and consumers' interest in gaming experiences that combine rich stories, challenging gameplay, and exhilarating 3D immersion," Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA. Presumably it's the difference between individual SKU and combined SKUs.

Hardware is out for the 360. A ludicrously high 507K. Although as typically the basic premise goes that software releases move hardware, I'm not sure exactly why they're seeing this degree of hardware growth.

Maybe Sony meant #1 among PS3 exclusives... or maybe they just jumped the gun, they haven't had much to celebrate from NPD lately.

I predicted that inFAMOUS 2 flop since December bruv, I pwn Pachter.:P I say Sony probably meant exclusive... Which is BS. Might as well wait till it's announced, NPD's becoming more and more of a mess since like... 2009? 2010? and the accuracy hasn't even been improved yet.:P

Infamous 2 is indeed number 1 when you go individual ( the old way how NPD used to do it ) but when you combine the multiplats take place above. amazing job infamous 2 they deserve it.

I know Zelda "sold out" but I wish Ninty did not purposely cut the shortage.

And I can't believe how well the 360 is doing considering the incredible drought its in.

Over 500k, I'm surprised the 360 sold so well on the summer especially since it's on its 6th year. It just goes to show there is still a market for current-gen consoles out there.

I don't think so when people go buy better more interesting games, which struggled to sell as much as DNF, and the reason was not because of quality.

I'm more curious as to why the 360 sold so well during the summer. Either something happened/came out that we don't know about, or launch 360s are finally starting to kick the bucket.

lol. I played the demo, and while it had the novelty, the gameplay wasn't exactly very good. It would be so worth it in a Steam bargain bin though. Come on holiday sales! $5!

How can MS be beat this holiday? It's almost impossible. They haven't even released their heavy hitters yet with gears 4, forza 4, the witcher 2, Halo CE anniversary etc. and they are already destroying the competiton. They also will double their Kinect software lineup this holiday. Wow.

Highly doubt that they will wait that long. Didn't you hear the rumors about them announcing their next system at next year's E3?

And note: Just because that they may be announcing their next gen console at next year's E3, doesn't mean that they will release it on that same year.

Wii Sports moved the Wii.

There wasn't really much major software released in general. The only major release was the universally panned DNF. June is not typically a major software month. It doesn't even seem Kinect-related.

This is befuddling and, unless there's some unknown unaccounted-for factor, flies in the face of conventional wisdom.

GulliversTravel

I remember when people were calling inFamous 1 a flop:lol:

Except Infamous 2 was a flop it didn't meet its hype...and infamous 1 was a game that completely didn't deserve its score.

How can MS be beat this holiday? It's almost impossible. They haven't even released their heavy hitters yet with gears 4, forza 4, the witcher 2, Halo CE anniversary etc. and they are already destroying the competiton. They also will double their Kinect software lineup this holiday. Wow.

Gears 4 is releasing already?:o

You would say the same thing if InF2 got a 9.0. I really don't see how one site determines a game overall performance.

Odd how you question scores only when it suits you?? InFamous 2 scores lower here that almost everywhere else and yet you ignore that and call it a flop and then go on to argue that the first didn't deserve it's score. Not bothering to cover up your fanboyism today??

I'm surprised. Not sure why it's selling so well, can it really be Kinect? There havent' been any other releases to note. EmperorSupreme
Perhaps it was because of E3 2011? I'm a loss for words for how the Xbox could do so well.

Just noticed that now. With the major 360 exclusive coming in 2 months, I guess that could be the reason. (Gears)

Just imagine if MS were to announce price drops this holiday season on all their models...Sales will skyrocket even more than ever before.
