NPD First Half 2018 Report: 20 billion spent, Xbox One and NES/SNES mini being the highlight, mobile included

• The US video game market made $19.5 billion in the first half of 2018, up 40% year over year.
• Hardware is up 21% year over year to $1.7 billion. NPD calls out the Xbox One and the NES/SNES Classic as particularly strong performers.
• Game revenue is up 43% year over year to $16.9 billion. Mobile was the strongest grower of any category.
• Major game highlights include Fortnite, Candy Crush, PUBG, Roblox, Far Cry 5, and God of War.
• Accessory sales are up 41% year over year, with headset and headphone sales doubling year over year. Most vendors of these products attribute this to Fortnite.
• NPD's MatPiscatella expects the year to end up double digits from 2017 due to the strong line-up closing out the year.

Nice to see the Xbox One continuing to trend upwards. Also great to see Monster Hunter World on the list as it’s such an awesome game. I really wish they would include digital sales for Nintendo games as without them it kind of makes the list feel like it might be inaccurate.

At the end of the day, gaming is a business and the big three are making money and seeing success. All three console corporation's are selling in great numbers and our favorite hobby is in healthy status. I don't understand why people are ass aching because of the Xbox One and games are selling well? I don't have a PS4 or a Switch, but happy that both are selling good as well. ?

This is true. My first next gen console was the PS4 then the Xbox. I used to barely touch the Xbox until the last couple years where I find myself using the Xbox more than the PS4. The only time I turned on the PS4 was for God of War for the entire year.

Congrats to all AAA exclusive games that break into the top 10 sales against multiplatform titles on multiple systems.

Yeah, I own the Pro and I've only used it twice this year. My playthrough with Horizon and then my playthrough with God of War. Spiderman might be my next game but seeing how they're working on some DLC that continues the story I may or may not hold off on the game until a completed edition is released...lol. I'll be most likely waiting on reviews.

I can't recall playing anything else besides Horizon last year on my PS4. Spiderman doesn't spark my interest so its going to be in the off state until next year and I am not even sure what I would want to play next year on the system.

Xbox is leading in growth YOY because last year their sales completely flatlined. It's not hard to grow when your sales are coming from almost zero.

Back on topic: Congrats GOW, truly deserved success for Santa Monica. Where is Sea of Trash and State of Flopbone Decay 2? ? Lems told me those games would continue to sell well over time and they are nowhere to be found lol.

@boycie: Its based of growth. So it means the Xbox one is doing better then it was last year. You don't see the PS4 being praised because its sales are not growing but it's still number 1 overall.
