Wrecking the competition with low budget games (not indicative of quality). Props to their strategy.

I think the idea was great because one of my biggest frustrations with Nintendo between both the Wii/DS and WiiU/3DS generations was that they never seemed to support their console and handheld devices equally. Giving strong support to one came at the expense of the other. Now with the Switch being one device with interchangeable functionality means they have one larger audience to make games for, only one system to worry about supporting.

Somewhat though I miss the 3DS, it's portability to just slide in my pocket made it perfect for communiting to work or taking with me on the go. I still use my Switch as a portable but mainly just around the home.

Holy hell! Those are some damn impressive numbers. Most are absolutely fantastic games as well. Kudos to Nintendo. 👍

It's funny how sheep are hyping sales threads now, and the cows are quiet. How the turned have tables.

They will come. Cows love to play exceptionalism, when it comes to sales.

Sales only matter if it makes them look good, otherwise "mobile games vs. Console games" or "Pokemon sells like CoD, it doesn't count," or something weird like that.

@jaydan: Indeed. Prepare yourselves for the, “kids and casuals just buy them” and my personal favourite, “only sell based off nostalgia” damage control. 😅

Sheep better buy Metroid Dread before Nintendo abandons the franchise for good. It’s selling as poorly as a Xbox or PlayStation game…

I guarantee it: if it was Metroid Dread and Elden Ring up against each other, they'd think they have a chance and these boards would be flooded with "Metroid will be slaughtered" but now it's "Pokemon is like CoD, not a big deal."

@goldenelementxl: "Sheep better buy Metroid Dread before Nintendo abandons the franchise for good. It’s selling as poorly as a Xbox or PlayStation game…"

Hope that isn't the case, I was probably going to get to it eventually but have such a backlist I wasn't in a rush. But I will never forget the mistake I made thinking I would call Nintendo's bluff on Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii which went for a bargain $30 and they threatened to pull it and they did. And my regret from that compelled me to pick up the Mario 3D Allstars because they said the same thing... now I feel like a putz because I still see that shit everywhere.

1) metroid Dread sold that much in 2 month's time, it will add several more million to that when all is done. Already a top-selling Metroid entry.

2) can't ignore the fact Metroid Dread was a major GOTY contender last year and ended up on many top games of 2021 lists.

Nintendo has taken notice.

I could not believe that an Animal Crossing and a Legend of Zelda game sold more copies than a Super Mario game.

1) Metroid Dread is successful, however modest it is compared to Pokemon.

2) prestige accolades is always a factor to consider wearing on one's sleeve. Nintendo makes games that sell, and Nintendo makes games that win awards.

Now if Metroid Dread had neither of those factors, then yeah, I'd be concerned.

Half of sales is 1st party. It shows how strong nintendo IP is and the struggles of 3rd party to sell there.

If you combine Switch and Wii U version sales:

– Mario Kart 8 (Switch & Wii U) – 51.81 million

– Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch) – 37.62 million

– The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch & Wii U) – 27.49 million

– Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch) – 27.4 million

– Pokémon Sword / Shield (Switch) – 23.9 million

Metroid Dread sold 2.74 million in its first 2.5 months, and is close becoming the best-selling Metroid game. It's just 100,000 away from beating Metroid Prime, which had lifetime sales of 2.84 million. Metroid Dread would probably end up reaching around 3-5 million by the end of this year.

For the love of god, when will someone release proper competition to the Switch? Nintendo is literally farming mobile gamers, and they're the only ones to do so. Sony needs to wake up and create a Playstation Portable that can play all ps4 and ps5 games. Said this before and will say it again. Guaranteed success even if they launch it at $600.

So what you're saying is it doesn't matter how much money Sony and Microsoft spend buying studios or developing games when people don't give a crap about your products.

I would be surprised if the game hasn't already made money though. its not pulling in animal crossing numbers, sure, but it also didn't cost Nintendo a huge amount of money to make.

I can't find anything on its cost of development but i would be surprised if it was more than, say, pillars of eternity or the launch version of elite dangerous.

Part of Nintendos strategy is to not require a game to sell 10s of millions of units to make it worthwhile for them (it's the main reason they jumped out of the horsepower race).

On another note: Go Ring Fit adventure! just keeps on trucking. Nintendo really should consider expanding into the exercise industry (crush the likes of peloton). A Ring Fit + program partnering with Gyms that ties into the switch/switch 2 in some way.

This shows you why Nintendo can cope without big-money acquisitions. Their IPs are so dominant that graphics isn't a concern.

Which is why the Metroid series has been MIA for so long. Those numbers are hardly worth Nintendos time. Fans of these games need to show up and spend that cash when these games release.

@goldenelementxl: 2.74 million units translate to $164 million revenue at a $60 price tag. For a low-budget side-scroller that probably didn't cost much more than $1 million to develop. That's a huge return on investment, no matter how you spin it. It doesn't need to sell like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash Bros or Animal Crossing to be a success.

Dang that's a lotta mario karts.

Sad to see Metroid Dread sold so few copies. Still waiting for that Prime 4, or that Prime 1-3 trilogy remaster without the dumb motion controls. Actually someone already got the WiiU trilogy to work with K&M on an emulator and it works really well probably way better than anything nintendo would ever squirt out sigh

There aren't even that many Metroid fans. Dread will likely end up selling around 5M. The big Metroid Prime 4 could hit 10M. It won't do Zelda numbers but it'll sell well above Dread I bet.

It's a long-standing myth to suggest Nintendo games never go down in price, because they actually do quite a bit. Nintendo games simply don't lose value over time like the competition does; otherwise, you can catch Nintendo games in sales often enough. You gotta be savvy for catching the sales if you want Nintendo games down in price.

@R4gn4r0k: It's 27.5M BOTW sales if you include the Wii U version. That translates to $1.65 billion revenue at a $60 price tag. Along with billions more generated from Switch hardware sales thanks to BOTW as a killer app. That's why the price doesn't drop.

I’m shocked that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze isn’t in that list. My local Walmart keeps getting the game in and it seems to keep selling out fairly well. I can’t believe it hasn’t broken a million sold yet.

Sad that Mario Kart 8 sold so well. Would've been nice to get a new Mario Kart on Switch, but there's no reason to make a new game when your old game is selling.

Nintendo knows what they are doing. That Mario and Pokemon IP is insane. The shit I like sold the least go figure. Hot take. Could the other consolites do the same if they focus on there most popular stuff. Sony multiple version of Spiderman. MS multiple version of Halo. Of course can they do it in a meaningful way that nintendo does.
