Nintendo Joins The EVO 2014 Sponsor List

The Super Smash Bros. Invitational has changed both Nintendo’s and the Smash community’s view on fighting game tournaments. Nintendo had made a great leap with the Super Smash Bros. series by holding this tournament at E3 2014, showing that Nintendo itself is ready to see the games in a tournament setting.

Supporting this, Nintendo has decided to become a sponsor for EVO 2014. EVO (Evolution Championship Series) is an annual tournament in which players compete playing various fighting games. Games such as Ultimate Marvel VS. Capcom 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and Super Smash Bros. Melee are all examples of games players can compete in.

One year ago, Nintendo wanted to shut down the MLG Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament. Now, they are sponsoring official tournaments, and indeed, all of MLG. Looks like Nintendo really does want Smash Bros. 4 to be taken seriously as competitive, and they really are doubling down on the core gamers with the Wii U generation.

Plus hey, who knows? Maybe there'll be some nice Smash 4 reveals at the event!

I guess I should have stuck with the Nintendo will do the thing you least expect them to do... kinda like exams at university :P

sony was a sponsor when they still used PS consoles on tourney's, in fact, Evo 2013 was the first one to be on xbox. It was moved to xbox only because many people complained about the PS3 being "one frame" behind. So, why would sony sponsor now that they don't have exclusive fighting games and their console are not being used anymore either?

The good will from being a sponsor? Writing it off as a tax benefit? Because even if they don't play on Sony systems that's still where the majority of sales from fighting games comes from?

Not saying they should sponsor or them not doing it is in poor taste. Just saying, switching consoles doesn't degrade any of the benefit they get from sponsoring.

I really want to watch this, no doubt I'll be at work when it's on.

Fantastic news for Evo, fans of the game, and the fighting genre in general!

Melee is the most popular, and when it was streamed last year at EVO it was the highest-viewed game on Twitch for a while. The scene is bigger than it's ever been and only seems to be growing, which is great.

Loving how melee is coming back to the forefront of fighters again. Hopefully, Project M starts getting some love too.

Fighting games are lame, all it is is button mashing.

I stated it was about time nintendo got on board because of their stubborn nature not allowing for shameless promotion for one of their biggest games.

And every time something negative is said about nintendo the great char has gotta deflect it because ninty isn't the golden goose it once was. :(

I respect the user and their love of it. But don't be blind enough to try and begin to deflect decent conversation
