NOTE: IM THINKING ALOUD. IM NOT WISHING FOR A NEW CONSOLE ANYTIME SOON EITHER.

The N64 and Playstation lasted for about 4-5 years. The gamecube, PS2, and XBOX lasted 4-5 years. Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, 4-5 years. It's been the same trend since NES era.We heard about the 360 in 2004. It's been almost 5 years since the 360 launch, and almost 4 years since the wii and PS3 launch, and we haven't even heard a rumor of any next-gen consoles, or when we could expect them. What's up? There have been plenty of newer processors, and we've seen 2 new pcs (Vista and 7), so I don't think it's technology. Maybe it's sales. Why stop producing consoles that continue to make money, constantly. That is probably the reason. Have themaximumtechnological powers of the current consoles not been realised yet? Is that why no one is making anything, they still have more up their sleeve and don't want to waste their current console? I don't know. It just seems weird that we haven't heard anything.

I can't think of when there was new console gen to come around when systems are still $200 or more(I could be wrong). I think when the current tech becomes more affordable then the next gen will start to be visible. Most people were predicting this gen would last until 2012 and if that makes it so the initial prices of the next gen consoles are lower I'm fine with that. Of course I also want to point out the NES gen was said to last 6 years and this gen wasn't considered to be in full swing until 06 so even if we don't hear anything until the 2011 E3 they still could stay with the usual trend. Maybe there has been a lesson learned after the PS3's success after price cuts.

A few reasons, for one the consoles are fairly powerful this time and better looking games do keep coming out, while the XBOX and PS2 had pretty much as good looking games as they could for a year or two around year 4 and 5. Economic times are tough, its harder to get millions of people to buy multiple consoles. Online and DLC help devs make money in new ways, and its likely they don't want to jump into a new gen yet.

This gen systems are more powerful then previous ones. They act like PC's more then ever before. They update them with new stuff all the time to either balance games or bring us new stuff to the systems. The trend of every 5 years or so replacing systems might be a thing of the past.

I for one are ready for a new console because of the expanded capabilities a game can get with more processing power.

The only one that will be needing an update soon is the Wii. The motion controller is getting old and not as fun as it was originally. *caugh*the fad is over*caugh*

i agree, hurry up with the new xbox already.

i used to be a late adopter but forget that noise, life is too short to be goofing around on a 5 year old console that was mostly obsolete the day it shipped.

The PS2 came out 2000? Xbox 360 came out 2006? 2006-2000=6?

This generation was always going to be a bit longer than the last.

Microsoft will once again start off the 7th generation as Wii is still selling like hotcakes and the PS3 sales are climbing...

I think one problem is jamming enough extra power into consoles to make a big enough difference for enough people to care, considering how impressive 3D graphics have already gotten even with consoles. I guess with new chips in the future it will become possible. The other problem is the cost of bringing out very powerful new consoles. MS and Sony wouldn't want to jump into losing money on costly new consoles so soon after the original Xbox (and the RROD issue with the 360) and the PS3 cost them so much.

Aren't they supposed to be on a "ten year cycle"? I doubt they'll be exactly ten years apart so I'd expect them to arrive any time between late 2013-2015.

Nintendo will probably announce something next year, maybe even for Christmas 2011 launch. (more likely now Wii sales are slowing down.) Sony and Microsoft will probably be 2012 announce, 2013 launch.

I'm expecting Nintendo to bring out the new system first. I think there was a quote around the time of the release of the Wii that they wouldn't move forward until the other guys caught onto doing something new(at the time motion controls is what they meant). Now that they have maybe we can see a more traditional type console from Nintendo.

there are still tons of games waiting to be played this gen, plenty more then can do with existing consoles. Xbox and PS about to get their Wii addons. and has any seen Wii games lately, they are looking more and more like non HD versions of their xbox and ps3 counter parts. i am in no hurry, wouldnt mind 2-3 more years before we see new consoles.

we need new consoles soon . We have seen all these systems can do .

I hope next gen companys will focus more on better ways to play rather then just better graphics. We don't need pc wanabe clones agian next gen . Console gaming is not pc. So they got to remember why people even started gaming on consoles in the first place . It is not about having the best hardware . its about having great games on simple cheap hardware. if you want the best graphics why do you even bother buying a console ? pc is the only way for high end gaming .

I don't see how you can say last gen was 7 years, unless you are counting from DC until Wii/PS3 and that's not really a take most people would take. I think most people would say last gen ended when 360 was released and started when PS2 was released. DC didn't catch on,sadly, it was more of a system that didn't belong to a specific gen.

So we need new consoles, but we *don't* need better graphics - instead we need simple cheap hardware? PS3 and 360 costs are finally getting down to the $200-$300 level; in other words, the 360 and PS3 have now become good cheap hardware.

Sony and MS are trying to change the way their games play with Move/Kinect, but people here just diss these peripherals as lame Wii knockoffs. It's really up to consumers and developers to decide if they want to use them, but MS and Sony did all they can.

Anyway, I think what a lot of people don't want to accept is that for MS and Sony the next generation starts with their Move/Kinect bundles. Current systems will last 5 more years wihout successors.

It will be needed to produce graphics close to those bullshots.

Also PC has already leaped into another generation long ago.

Although games like The Witcher 2 will make it even more apparent.

This is going to be the longest continuous console generation so far due to the success. I don't expect any announcements for quite a while.

Move and Kinect alone signify that Sony & MS plan on continuing this generation for at least 2 years unless they fail miserably.

Nintendo is probably gonna be first out the gate with a new console if they can come up with a new gimmick. Sony will probably be second because Move will most likely fail commercially and then Microsoft will be last since Kinect will most likely be successful commercially.

The Witcher 2 will be downgraded and come out on consoles, just like Crysis 2, Metro 2034 and STALKER 2.

Whether PC jumped into a new generation technologically really doesn't matter if people are playing the same games across the platforms. Perhaps when a large number of PC developers decide consoles are too antiquated to support anymore, MS and Sony will feel the pressure -- until then -- there is no pressure.

When people tend to think next gen they're most likely thinking of graphics. I highly doubt people want a next gen because they can't wait to have 500GB hard drives in their console.

it still has not been decided if they will put The Witcher 2 on consoles.

They dropped the console project for The Witcher 1.

Also you would miss out on a lot of the story.

And for some time after the PS3 and Xbox 360 were released they still made games that shared the old generations like the PS2 while being on the PS3.

Heck there are handheld versions of console games too.

But those are bullshots which do not represent what current consoles are capable of... Lets just say it didn't do you much justice.
