Icarus (Greek: Ἴκαρος, Latin: Íkaros, Etruscan: Vicare) is a character in Greek Mythology. He is the son of Daedalus and is commonly known for his attempt to escape Crete by flight, which ended in a fall to his death.

While I know videogame designers are mostly fanboys with jobs in the industry for the most part, Icarus is a name that's been associated with flight for quite awhile.

And it's very common for a designer of hardware to name the first iteration or prototype MK.1

So I'm guessing that it's more that than what you said. But who knows? You could be right.
