Sony is planning a new version of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console with a higher-capacity hard-disk drive, according to a US regulatory filing made by the company.

The filing to the US Federal Communications Commission was made earlier this month to notify the FCC of a change to the PS3's Bluetooth module. The FCC is the radio regulator in the US and as such all new products that use radio or changes to these products must be submitted to the organisation for approval before they can be sold.

Let the hard drive wars begin. This generation is starting to be more and more about who can build the biggest, most powerful console and prove the most non-gaming options. It should be about the games, even Wii doesn't seem to be about the games. The Wii isn't about more powerful hardware but the hardware (motionsensing) is the focus there too.

Or maybe because it isn`t and a blind fanboy will only try to convince me it is?

The funny and ironic thing is, PC is trying to become like console and become a more dedicated platform, while consoles are trying to become PC and less dedicated platforms. It really makes me chuckle. I really hope the industry crashes. So we get back to the games.

I wouldn't be that sure, Sony has done a great job when making a new version of their console. Not only usually the new versions are cheaper than the older ones, but they also are smaller and some have better bonuses. (Remember the Playstation and the PSone, the size change of the console was pretty nice at that time, and lets not talk about the Slim PS2 which was a great redesign of the PS2)

I do not believe that is compatible... :?

That looks like one of those normal PC ones. IIRC the PS3 is only compatible with 2.5" laptop HDD, which, are a lot more expensive.

for 92$ on newegg you can get a 160gb Laptop HDD 2.5inch for the ps3 which is significantlly cheaper than 180$ for the 120gb 360 HDD which i aint a ps3 owner but makes me mad at the fact that microsoft uses the same 2.5inch drives but wont let us upgrade and overprice these dam drives.

the only thing Elite has on ps3 is 120gb HDD which you can upgrade the ps3s HDD on your own with as little as 92$ for a 160gb 2.5inch HDD if you wanted to! Sony doesnt need to do elite it already is.

IIRC the PS3 takes SATA (serial ATA) notebook hard drives which are a bit more expensive than their IDE counterparts. This is the cheapest 160GB I found on newegg.  $110.28 shipped. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136071

Sony doenst need to do that because you can swap the hdd inside the machine for any 2.5inch hdd out there, thus there is no point.

That site is stupid, that new patent isn't going to lead to a new PS3 model, it just isn't.

If that the case why they wont say a word than. A document publicly available via the internet - gawd bless it - has ignited speculation that a revised-hardware PS3 is in the pipeline. It's revealed in the document that Sony has made an application requesting 'a class II permissive change' to the console to the US Federal Communications Commission. It's suggested by the changes detailed that a version of PS3 with an 80Gb hard drive will be released to live alongside existing models. Alterations - i.e. update - to PS3's Bluetooth antennae are additionally related to in the document. It's likely that any revisions to PS3 hardware would be minor and applied across the board, with a new 80Gb model simply being that - a PS3 with a bigger HDD. We'll just have to wait and see. Sony declined to comment on the matter when contacted earlier. http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=160997
