I hear alot of PC users claim that the mouse and keyboard is the ultimate control method for FPS....and I cannot find any substance to this argument at all.

The mouse itself isn't too bad for the looking around and clicking to shoot - but add the keyboard to the mix and the whole thing just goes terribly wrong. I just can't see how anyone can defend the key board as a great way to contol a FPS.

It seems to me to be the most ill suited tool to control movement (and all the other secondary functions) ever?

RTS - yes, mouse and keyboard is perfect and the idea of trying to play RTS usuing a controller, is again, the complete opposite to the above arguemtment - RTS with a controller is just ill suited.

Am I the only one that thinks this way?

Because you can map every single command onto a keyboard? There's a reason most PC version of console shooters have lean/peak with Q/E. Most moving is done with the mouse anyway, the essentials are strafing and moving backwards fowards, with the keyboard being perfect..

Mouse/keyboard is the best combo for playing FPSes, if you suck at it then its another thing...

Since the argument is so subjective, obviously people are going to agree and disagree.

Personally I feel the KB/M combination is perfect for shooters. It's a simple interface that allows for immense complexity in use.

You downplay the mouse a bit too.

Anyway... perhaps you need a better keyboard, and/or you're simply not used to it.

I play RTS games on PC

Only play some America's Army on PC

I just think think its the most illogical method of movement control.

You have no sensitivity control like you do a controller.

I guess its something that you learn to live with and get used to - but "off the bat" its not the most logical control system

Honestly, movement sensitivity control is something the FPS genre has really endeavoured to move away from.

It's either been largely axed, or compensated for with some sort of slow move button which you toggle.

Please answer the following question.

If controllers are better than a mouse for FPS games why do all FPS on console have built in Auto-Aim/Assist features?

If the gamepad is so great for FPS control then explain why almost all console FPS games have to use Auto Aiming to correct for the innaccuracy of the pad.

*Edit* Damn too slow, but like the above poster the question remains.

Id actually go the exact opposite way

I find Kb/M tediously easy to use - getting a head shot is way too easy to be satisfying.

I got bored of Kb/m fps a long, LONG time ago.....

I sort of agree with you. Analog stick > WASD, Don't even try to deny this. But the advantage of the Keyboard is the number of keys allowing for more functionality. However sometimes devs go a bit overboard with this Idea and use too many buttons.

I agree. I think the Wii-mote is better suited for FPS games because it brings you closer to the feeling of holding & pointing a gun at your targets, making it more immersive unlike the mouse.

Im certain that there are vast numbers of people better than me , but theyre obviously easilly pleased.

Ive been playing pc fps since the start kid, I think im well within my right to have an opinion on this.

Umm no, i'm saying that if you think it makes all FPS games so easy that they ar eno challenge at all then you should become a pro player and make a fortune doing it. AFAIK most people don't find it that easy.

What you basically said is you are so good (it is so easy is the same thing) that you have to handicap yourself with a controller to make it fun. I was just pointing out what you should do with those mad skillz.

Since when did teh l33t pro gamers define the gaming experience????

I make good money from my job.

I play games for fun, and as it stands I find using gamepads more fun, but I can certainly see the Wii-mote freshening things up in the future.

keys are not pressure sensitive.

Keys are not a great way to control movement IMO - its just not a logical system that lends itself to being practical?

It's not like I'm saying Analog stick > the Mouse. That would be blasphemy but I don't believe the KB half to the KB/M combo is all that it's cracked up to be. 360 degree variable speed strafing feels better to me then 8 degree 2 speed strafing. Not to mention hitting keys other than Q, E, R, F, Space, Shift & Caps Lock whilst using WASD for movement is uncomfortable (And caps lock doesn't seem to be usable anyway). Still the hot keys are useful for slow moments.

The only one thing that is better about a controller is rumble.

It was actually great fun playing through HL2 on the 360 with rumble support.

(In HL2 when you walk over those bugs and squish them... the rumble felt so satisfying. And the feedback from your weapons etc.)

But, really, Mouse and keyboard is great when you get used to it. I do prefer it for FPS in a way.

I happen to be lucky enough to enjoy both controller and mouse and keyboard.

I found the learning curve on mouse/keyboard to be quite steep when first started playing (this was back in the original Unreal Tournament days) but once you've got it down its one of the best control schemes ever. Dual analog is horrible in comparison to me mainly because the turning is nowhere near as quick as with a mouse.

The only thing that rivals mouse/keyboard strictly speaking in terms of controls is the Wiimote. Its more immersive and becomes more customisable with each FPS released. In The Conduit you can customise the controls. From the bounding box to the button commands to motion controls...

they should make a new kind of keyboard that feature sensitive for gaming, that will make the console controller plays like crap in FPS compare to it.

I don't use a door, I use a 600lbs iron portcullis which I have to winch up using 20 yards of high strenght chain around a complex system of cogs. Its far easier and more accurate than a mere door.
