Miyamoto hinting at a new Mario announcement?

Shigeru Miyamoto inevitably gets asked when the next Mario game is during promotions for The Mario Super Bros. Movie, and he always has coy answers ready.

During a Variety interview, after the interviewer asks when we can expect the next Mario game, Miyamoto replies, "Please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs."

Does that mean a Nintendo Direct in the near future, or a Nintendo Direct next year? Or perhaps the year after? No one knows. It's a perfect deflection. Miyamoto was asked a similar questionduring an IGN interview, and he replied, "Nintendo is always working on Mario."

Mario is Nintendo's biggest IPs, so players probably don't have to worry about the next Mario game not coming--it's only a matter of when, something Miyamoto doesn't have an answer to for players yet.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes out in theaters on April 5, and ahead of the release, reviews are trickling in. You can check out our sister site Metacritic for a comprehensive overview.

In GameSpot's own The Super Mario Bros. movie review, critic Phil Owen gave the movie an 8/10. "Folks have been having all sorts of emotional turmoil about this new Super Mario Bros. Movie since the moment it was announced that Guardians of the Galaxy and Lego Movie star Chris Pratt would provide the voice of Mario," Owen said. "All that gnashing of teeth was for nothing, though. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is both pretty funny and also just plain pretty--this movie is a feast for the eyes."

Lol, not a great answer, but damn, I really want a new Mario game announcement already! Don’t you, SW?

Rather have a Switch Pro announcement. Or Switch 2.

I don't know how could anyone be interested in anything from Nintendo when you know for a fact its made for a system that can't render 3D visuals anymore.

Hell yeah I’d love a new Super Mario game.

You might as well abandon all hopes cause you won't see Switch 2 (no chance in hell of ever seeing a Switch Pro like) this year and as long as the current Switch is still selling, could be 2 more years until the Switch sales have died down.

I was hoping that since we're soon approaching 6 years since Odyssey, that maybe they were saving the announcement to coincide with the movie. And that the release would be soon after, within the same calendar year. Not that Mario is in need of sales boost, but seems it would only make sense.

Though it would also make sense to save it as a launch title for their next system. Who knows.

Odyssey already looked good and ran great, not in need of new hardware as much as some other Nintendo games, but would make sense to sell the next system.

Keep your word that mobile is not your focus. Seriously, f*** investors for forcing Iwata on that.

Who cares about Mario. There's a new one every month, year, day or etc lol.

Give me a 2D mario and a 2D Donkey Kong please. Or heck give me a 2D platformer where you switch between Mario and Donkey Kong giving you completely different gameplay options.

Poor Iwata, having to stoop down to the lowest of the lowest form of entertainment. I feel really sorry for him.

I only want 3 different Mario games. A new 2D, a new Mario Maker, and Mario Kart Maker. Keep the 3D games out of here unless it's Galaxy 3.

I knew it! He's going to admit he was wrong about Paper Mario TTYD, that is was the best version of Mario, and that they should do more wacky, story-driven stuff with Mario characters while bringing the series back to it's turn-based RPG roots.

Mario games are too kiddy for me sadly. I try to play them. They bore me to no end.

Odyssey came out in 2017.

So unless we're counting Mario Maker 2 (2019), or some Mario spin offs (golf, party, etc.) there hasn't been full fledged mainline game in 6 years.

Yea we haven’t had a good Mario game in a while. I don’t even consider Odyssey that great, but Bowser’s Fury was interesting.

I bet somewhere in there is a new $200 Mario Amiibo for the suckers.

Now is a good time for Nintendo to cash-in with Mario games and merchandise while the movie is dominating the box office.
