MCV has learnt that Microsoft has been telling partners that the Next Xbox will NOT include a disc drive.

The briefings have been issued under what MCV's source describes as "the strictest NDA" they have ever encountered.

Although the console will not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.

Furthermore, a 2013 launch date for the hardware has been confirmed.

Thoughts?

I don't see how that would work, short of mailing your DVDs to Microsoft.

If it's going to raise the price that much, they won't do it.

$70 games aren't sustainable anymore.

Perhaps with all the current memory card tech then can mass produce something cheaply. 8gb cards now cost less then £5 retail, wouldnt cost that much to chuck a cartridge casing around it.

A Blu-Ray Disc costs less than $1 though.

Do Microsoft really want to thin down the profits of their 3rd party further?

You aren't really taking into account the fact that the majority price of the game isn't from manufacturing.

Oh no. This CAN'T go well.

Not to mention, I think the "no used game" rumor may be legit for this case.

OPEN YOUR EYES. This is a ploy to end used games and make you pay for your last gen games again. M$ owning lems left and right and handing out blindfolds.

After reading this, to me it sounds more like they are going the DD route, with the interchangeable card storage acting as an HDD on to which you can download games. To me, it makes no sense to go with carts (like of the old day) because they are significantly more expensive to produce than DVD's and BluRay disks. Furthermore, they would have to do some R&D if it was a "unique" system, which again would not be cost effective. I am inclined not to believe this rumor, but if it is true, then wow what a weird move by MS. It also makes no sense to go DD only because they will be cutting out a huge market where people dont have Internet connections, or do not have good enough internet connections.

And who has room for an old console on top of the new ones? I only have 2 HDMI ports on my TV.

exactly, and with DD only making up roughly 20% of the market it's a stupid move.

And do what? DD and SD cards? For DD, hard drives are pretty damn expensive right now. Only further raises the price of the console.

Im not convinced this is true. 2 of the main reasons nintendo lost so much during the n64/ps1 era was the cost of the cartridges and the pitiful storage capacity of them, you can buy memory cards these days with anythin up to 64GB but the cost is huge and would be financial suicide for MS and destroy everything they've spent the last 2 generations building up.

The idea of a cartridge is good, no loading times, onboard saves etc etc but the negatives FAR outweigh the pluses. My money is on a BR drive in the next machine.

I would be all for it, but I'd rather have DS-size carts than Vita ones. The Vita ones are small and that's good I guess, but they're way too small and would be real easy to lose. Have to be extra careful with those. If true, then that would be nice. But damn, that means I'd have to get a 360 and couldn't rely on BC; but if 360 games are released on Xbox Live, not all the games I want will be (I'm sure). Oh well, small price to pay for progress.

I find that a bit hard to believe. I bet that bit about "some form of game loadout" is just PR bull, and it ends up being a DD system.

So Micro$oft cutting even more corners?
Killing off the used market, total domination on DD prices and quite possibily holding your SP games for ransom by linking/DRM'ing your games to an account.

Microsoft going DD? Remember how much 250 GB propiatary hard drives cost?

Really? i always thought lems touted Hao as the best exclusive ever, which it is really, i have not seen one single lemming tout an XBLA title as being the best exclusive ever, talking out of your behind again i see.
