It has the combat dept and complexity of WoW.

The first two levels of WoW that is.

If you want to call it an RPG be my guest, but you are just downgrading other real RPG games out there. If we call ME2 an rpg we might as well call Infamous RPG.

JangoWuzHere

Agreed.
The Mass Effect series' strength lies in its presentation, not in the depth of its choices. Mass Effect 2 might've simplified a lot of the RPG elements, but that suited the game well.

I'm not sure if I'd go as far as calling it "not an RPG", but as soon as player skill started determining how good you were in combat...eh, perhaps that's an accurate description.

*edit* Still, it had some interesting ideas. If the interrupt system was expanded upon, allowing you to choose from a number of different options (rather than just "left click for badness, right click for goodness"), then that could be very useful for other RPGs. More choices is always a good thing.

Knew the TC just hate ME2 from past posts, so any other arguments on him would be wasted. Just go by the definition of the words and he can't argue.

No, Mass Effect 2 has about the same amount of RPG as in those games ( Except maybe prototype). And Mass Effect fit's into a category. Modern Action Adventure. Not to be confused with RPG.

It followsing the three things that make it. Role - You take the role as your own version of Shepard, deciding how you want to go about choices, choices that can differ the outcome of the story. Things that can save lives or destroy them. How do you want to press forward. What will you do? Play - You play out the character how you want to, how do you go about continueing the scenario or situation. Will you use this? Will you use that? How will you build you character and play it out. Game - It follows mechanic of game, and simply not just a roleplaying experience. You follows what you gives you as game mechanic; gunplace, cover, skills, etc.

Yes, yes it is. But then again what sets Mass effect into the RPG genre are the decisions you make and the subsequent consequences for a living iverse, not its combat complexity.

And Final Fantasy is a turn based strategy game, Morrowind is a hack'n slash game, Fallout is a shooter, Baldur's Gate is a real time strategy game. By your logic, none of them is an RPG game, so I have to ask the question - what is an RPG game by your standards?

Hey Vaasman was right.

I'm pretty sure it's a fact that ME2 is an Action RPG. There nothing to agree or disagree. The fact that you keep calling ME2 a shooter while not listening to our post mean you're a troll. Hell right now I'm feeding you. It got enough RPG elements to be an RPG. It just more of a shooter.

Inventory, Items, Classes, Levels , Spells (2 spells doesn't make an RPG), Trading, Open worlds, potions, quests,. I know that ME2 had some of these elements, but in the end it felt like playing a lesser version of Gears of War. That's what i didn't like.

Spells? Spells has nothing to do with being a RPG or not. Nothing at all. Potions neither. =/ I think you are confusing "genre" with "setting". ME2 has practically every element that define a RPG, which are handled lightly because the game being a shooter, too. Hence its definition of Shooter/RPG, the definition that practically the whole industry accepts as the genre ME2 belongs to.

Sure its not quite like other RPGs with how majorly toned down the RPG elements are, but its still an excellent game.

Yeah well potions, something to heal yourself with like the medi-gel in Mass Effect 1. Hiding behind cover and waiting for regeneration is so a shooter.

[QUOTE="Revan_911"][QUOTE="Supafly1"]And Final Fantasy is a turn based strategy game, Morrowind is a hack'n slash game, Fallout is a shooter, Baldur's Gate is a real time strategy game. By your logic, none of them is an RPG game, so I have to ask the question - what is an RPG game by your standards?IronBass

ME had spells they were called Bionic and Tech powers. ME2 had about three in the whole game. Push, Pull , Overload. That's it.

[QUOTE="Revan_911"][QUOTE="toast_burner"] Are you serious? Open worlds, potions (WTF) how do those make it a RPG? and mass effect has quests they are called missions insteadVaasman

Yeah well potions, something to heal yourself with like the medi-gel in Mass Effect 1. Hiding behind cover and waiting for regeneration is so a shooter.

You do know medi-gel is still there and is used to revive downed teammates right?

Damnit why do I even bother.

Hiding behind cover and regenerating is something i was expecting from a Call of Duty game, not a RPG.

I know. That does not change that spells have nothing to with it being a RPG or not.
