We are grateful for Haden’s leadership in establishing Hangar 13, building and uniting teams in Novato, Brighton and Czech, and releasing multiple studio-defining Mafia games and collections,” 2K wrote in an internal communication shared with VentureBeat and others. “What Haden helped build will continue to carry forward and grow for years to come. We support all of our employees pursuing their passions, and we wish nothing but the best for him in what’s next.”

What 2K didn’t mention in the email was that Matthew Urban, Hangar 13 chief operating officer, has also left the studio. “What an amazing ride at H13.......let’s see what is next,” he wrote on LinkedIn. These shifts come as Hangar 13 pivots from original projects back to established franchises like Mafia, the open world, third-person shooter series that’s often compared to Grand Theft Auto—except with a more mob-movie approach.

Replacing Blackman is Nick Baynes, currently studio head at Hangar 13's Brighton, UK office, which Kotaku understands to be leading development on a new Mafia game. While the project is still early in development, its code name is Nero and it’s expected to be a prequel to the Mafia trilogy. The plan is to make it in Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Mafia III engine that was recently used for the remasters.

Hopefully they drop the whole open world. make it linear like original 2 games.

I love the Mafia series especially 1&2. I hope this prequel is as good as those.

Yeah it should be linear and not an open world game stuffed with content. There's plenty of those already.

Its better than GTA series.

Mafia 3 is only bad.

Original Mafia is one of the greatest game of all time. Mafia 2 is great as well and better than any GTA.

Only like the first game, and mostly for nostalgia. A lot of it isn't good.

Mafia 2 has a pretty cool intro, it's shitty slow walk copy the Halflife tram ride (like every game ever) but it's done very well, like walking around 1950s people times full of Italians eating spaghetti and committing crime with mammaia hanging out the window wondering if her boy is alright.

The Mafia series is a strange one they build really great open worlds but they just use them as set pieces they all lack major variety. Mafia 2 is my favorite in the series because the gunplay is so damn good and they actually use Nvidia physx in the right way and it makes the combat feel more awesome. I have no faith in Hangar 13 Mafia 3 sucked with the repetitive mission design and it's going to be a prequel to the original Mafia I guess so that's sounds awful and boring. I would of rather had the Las Vegas setting in the 70's that they where rumored to be working on for a time it was suppose to inspired by the great 1995 movie Casino that sounded awesome.

Thats what Mafia is about.

Mafia 1 was never meant to be open world. it was not GTA clone.

Its linear shooter divided into chapters like Max payne but with driving and set in open city.

Mafia 3 becomes GTA clone and thus ruined.

Mafia 3 was ruined by repetitive mission design it was nothing like GTA. Mafia 3 had a bland open world just like the first Mafia game aka set piece so I thought you would of liked it. It also had repetitive mission design like Far Cry 2 so logically this should be your favorite Mafia game.

@ghosts4ever: Dude, I love Mafia 3! Why do you hate it? 3 was really enjoyable and couldn't get into 1 or 2, to be honest.

Pretty much this. Could look past the bad thanks to the atmosphere.

It has everthing to do with GTA. they wanted to catch GTA popularity.

Mafia 1 and 2 were not GTA clones. 2 has money system and other GTA elements. but 1 was not.

Mafia 1 was closest thing for being third person immersive sim. it has realistic shooting plus simulated driving. Mafia 3 is arcade game with fast cars and arcadish wall cover gameplay.

Mafia 3 is GTA clone.

Mafia 1 and 2 are still better than all GTA games combine. even Mafia 1 remake which is disappointing is better than GTA series lol.

Being better than gta means nothing, and its not even better than gta, and that's coming from someone who doesn't like gta one bit.

BS and you know it! I played and enjoy Mafia 3 and that game is nothing like GTA. We get it, you hate GTA and GTA for me is a hit or a miss franchise but stop comparing everything to GTA.

Its hard to have much faith in Hanger 13 at this point. Each successive Mafia game has been worse, and they made a mess of the remake IMO.

whoever is making the decisions there just doesn't seem to get what made the first game, and to a lesser extent second game work

I could be down for this if done right, even though the franchise in my opinion has been mostly miss and little hit.

1 and 2 were great. 3 is a piece of sh*t along with the remake. So I have no confidence in the next game.

How boring, just about all major developers are going to use the same engine. Secondly, I guess there will be next-gen pro consoles.

Mafia 1 was fantastic and 2 was great as well. Didn't play 3, and based on what the general consensus is, I'm glad I didn't. I'm moderately interested in a new game on the off chance that it's actually similar to the first two. But I doubt it.

Haha, you have lost your mind. They are mid tier games at best. It's sad because the story and voice acting is on point but the gameplay is mediocre at best.

2 was not as good as 1, 3 was trash and the remake was worse than the original. Not confident that we will get a good game.
