Lionhead Studios creative director Gary Carr has said that ?every single game is on-rails? while defending the decision to keep the same control scheme that drew so much criticism towards Fable: The Journey at E3 2011.

Nobody gives a quote quite like Molyneux, but his Lionhead replacement and Fable: The Journey creative director Gary Carr is doing his very best to emulate the Brit, claiming that ?every single game is on-rails?, because you?re always pressing buttons in a certain order to get a result.

?It?s interesting you say that,? said Carr when asked about people?s preconceptions of on-rails games by CVG. ?Every single game is on-rails. I can score a fantastic goal on FIFA if I press certain buttons in the right order at the right time, that?s the rails bit.

?Peter?s [post-E3] on-rails rant, if we should call it that, was him trying to hit back at the criticisms saying that it wasn?t on-rails. I think, if we had done this again, we would have just said, yeah, it?s on rails.

?The truth is, we were actually close to killing that E3 demo, but some of the team tried to revive it. We did come back from E3 [2011] with some people saying, we?re doing something wrong here. We need to change course. Ultimately, the decision was, keep the faith. On-rails is actually necessary to make the game work really well. We are building a story-based game, a well-crafted world, a powerful narrative, a beautiful looking game. All our money is going into that. We are not messing with alternative control schemes any more.
?

The sting of that E3 showing still seems to be hurting Lionhead, and there?s certainly very little excitement surrounding the upcoming Fable game ? largely because of the fact that, yes, it is a Kinect game on-rails. Carr?s argument that every game is essentially on-rails may be technically correct (in a very, very loose sense), but it really sounds as though he?s clutching at straws to justify the decision, and that the studio clearly lost confidence in at some point along the line, even if they eventually decided to stick with it.

Epic Lionhead damage control, pre Fable Journey.

I haven't seen damage control like this since Emily Rogers when her Retro Studios rumor got debunked.

This is possibly the worst damage control I have ever seen, who is hoping to fool with this response? He is acting like no one other than him knows anything about games.

They are REALLY stretching the term of "on rails". Has Lionhead ever made a good game this gen? Fable is too easy and too short, not worth paying full price for. Molyneux my be gone, but he's still full of sh!t with his "$50,000 DLC Virtual Ice Pick" thing.

Fable The Journey was on rails, I remember Molyneux said it had exploration, but that's obviously not true. I wonder how good this game will work with Kinect considering it has input lag.

Wow that's embarrassingly bad. It's a pity MS is forcing their "core" studios to make Kinect games. They clearly aren't bothered at all...

Depends on what you mean by "Good Game" if you go by review scores then yes because 7.0 is considered "good" on Gamespot.

You can't just change the accepted definition of "on-rails" to suit you own needs.

Doesn't work like that.

FIFA is on rails? A game that allows you to play as anyone on the field and can switch between people on the fly. Where the game activiely changes according to where the ball is. Thats just terrible.

It's sad to hear that they think Black&White is a 'push a button and win' game.

Well, he has a point, almost all games are on rails because everything that happens is pre-made, scripted, it's not like you can play even something like STALKER and expect something different every time. The only difference in games are the extent of how "scripted" "on rails" it is, Fabel Journey is the epitome of on rails.

Fable is a simple game for people who want to play simple games. Criticizing other games is not going to lessen any flaws the game may have. Stupid damage control is stupid.

I feel those comments from Lionhead are forced. I'm sure the studio is ashamed they needed to say Fifa is "somewhat" on rails. What a joke.

Not all games are on-rails, generalizations like that just reak of fail. (Kind of like Lionhead)

All games are scripted, sure, but that doesn't excuse your game not even trying to give the illusion of freedom.

On rails games suck.

Obviously the game is going to be garbage, but didn't know the developers even think that. I don't think I'll let the kids even try the demo of the POS casaul, garbage, Kinect(lol) game.

But seriously, Lionhead, there is a difference between a game being linear and a game being "on rails".
