Combination of things that led to the PS4's meteoric rise:
1. Core gamers sick of being told that consoles were going the way of the dodo while Microsoft seemingly took that philosophy to heart by marketing their console as a voice activated cable box.
2. The infamous dunk on being able to play used games at E3, which had a very long tail (I've overheard casual rubes up until about 2015 still claim the XBox didn't play used games).
3. Being cheaper at launch
4. Being more powerful at launch
5. Core gamers being put-off by the XBox One reveal and the immediate fallout of trying to backdoor the DRM to gamers via the press.
6. PSN very quickly closing the gap in functionality between it and XBox Live.
7. Launch games being ass on the XBone after keeping their fanbase waiting for a long time for first party games while Sony still had dry powder for both the PS3 and the PS4 simultaneously the first year-ish.
8. Halo MCC being piss-poor at launch and the open venting about it's rough-shod online across forums and article comments.
9. To this very day, no AAAAE game on the XBox.
10. XBox fanbase and leadership making all of those problems much worse with politicking about future promises and how gamers had "misunderstandings" about the machine when these consoles are not magic plastic boxes full of wonder and mystery or secret sauce.
11. Nintendo completely waffling the WiiU launch and having to lose focus on the console market by pouring resources into keeping the 3DS afloat initially making them an utter non-issue compared to Sony's PS4 in the console marketplace.
12. The very quick way that developers and publishers caught on to the PS4s market position and subsequently stealing any and all would-be exclusive franchises making it the heir apparent to the PS2 by no later than mid-2014.
