Personally, resolutiongate made me get a PS4 first this gen. All the articles I would see showing tons of games running at 720p or 900P on xbox versus 1080P on PS4 really helped push PS4. It didn't feel right to pay more for a weaker console. Heck I'd have gotten PS4 first even if the xbox was the same price just cause the PS4 was more powerful.

Now lets consider next gen. If both Sony and MS release around the same time again, with a similar situation where one console is more powerful than the other at the same price or less, do you think resolutiongate will make a comeback or play a factor again during launch?

It was the price because it's hard to convince your parents to buy the more expensive option.

When PS4 and Xbox One launched the Xbox One was $500. I don't know if the resolution helped or not but PS4 being $100 cheaper sure did.

Other than that Sony had more franchises to work with than MS so that probably helped as well.

Obviously helped £100 less and a more powerful system. MS played their part with the dreadful unveil.

Yep. Ps4 is seen as the more powerful and cheaper of the 2 so no brainer to choose PS. Xbox also suffers from "xbox has no games" later

Performance probably helped differentiate the two consoles most since the bulk of the library was multiplatform titles.

There is a ton of reasons why the xbone was a failure at launch.

More powerful console for $100 less. Would have been pretty foolish to be an Xbox One early adapter. MS really shot themselves in the foot early on, kind of like what Sony did last gen with some bad engineering and build cost/price issues.

It was a big part of it. People weren't trying to pay $100 extra for a device that performed worse and released at around the same time with basically the same games.

For me it was the Kinect gate. First Xbones required Kinect to work. I just did not like the idea of NSA spying on me via Kinect camera, so I went for PS4.

MS wisened up later, and dropped Kinect, but by then it was too late.

Would you have bought the PS4 if it was $100 more than the Xbox One? That's kinda where the Pro and X are right now.(Except they were released a year apart) As drlostrib said, it was mostly price, but a double whammy since the resolution was lower AND the price was higher... Plus it was butt ugly huge.

Combination of things that led to the PS4's meteoric rise:

1. Core gamers sick of being told that consoles were going the way of the dodo while Microsoft seemingly took that philosophy to heart by marketing their console as a voice activated cable box.

2. The infamous dunk on being able to play used games at E3, which had a very long tail (I've overheard casual rubes up until about 2015 still claim the XBox didn't play used games).

3. Being cheaper at launch

4. Being more powerful at launch

5. Core gamers being put-off by the XBox One reveal and the immediate fallout of trying to backdoor the DRM to gamers via the press.

6. PSN very quickly closing the gap in functionality between it and XBox Live.

7. Launch games being ass on the XBone after keeping their fanbase waiting for a long time for first party games while Sony still had dry powder for both the PS3 and the PS4 simultaneously the first year-ish.

8. Halo MCC being piss-poor at launch and the open venting about it's rough-shod online across forums and article comments.

9. To this very day, no AAAAE game on the XBox.

10. XBox fanbase and leadership making all of those problems much worse with politicking about future promises and how gamers had "misunderstandings" about the machine when these consoles are not magic plastic boxes full of wonder and mystery or secret sauce.

11. Nintendo completely waffling the WiiU launch and having to lose focus on the console market by pouring resources into keeping the 3DS afloat initially making them an utter non-issue compared to Sony's PS4 in the console marketplace.

12. The very quick way that developers and publishers caught on to the PS4s market position and subsequently stealing any and all would-be exclusive franchises making it the heir apparent to the PS2 by no later than mid-2014.
