Had more fun in Skyrim than Dark Souls?

Do you think that Final Fantasy XIII destroys Fallout 3?

Which type of RPG is better? JRPGs vs. WRPGs

To finalstar: I know you'll vote for JRPGs, but at least name some worthwhile JRPGs that are good like Demon Souls.

wrpgs. jrpgs have been the same ever since the japanese looked at wizadry. wrpgs have evolved. japanese devs dont understand what an rpg is. all their games are strategy games at best.

WRPG's have far and away been better this gen (on consoles). I don't really prefer one over the other though, as i'll play any good game.

Overall? JRPGs for me. This gen? JRPGs if you count handhelds and if not, then WRPGs.

I don't play many WRPGs.

I prefer Jrpgs mainly because of the stories that they bring about as well as the fluidity of their battle mechanics

Lately I like WRPG's a lot more than JRPG's, I haven't liked any JRPGs this gen and hopefully Xenoblade fixs that while I've already played a handful of awesome WRPGs.

I give my vote to WRPGs. They have been better then JRPGs this gen, I believe. The only two JRPG series I really liked this gen were Demon/Dark Souls and Xenoblade. Of which, the souls series also plays a lot like a traditional WRPG.

EDIT: I should have said on consoles. Handhelds are an entirely different beast.

When I wrote the OP, I couldn't think of any JRPGs besides Demon's Souls and Final Fantasy XIII. Those were the only two good JRPGs that I like this gen, but finalstar will start saying a bunch of crap about JRPGs that no one has heard of or no one cares about.

Put the highest quality WRPGs up against the highest quality JRPGs...I'll go JRPG.

for me:

Dark/Demon'sSouls > Oblivion/Skyrim

Xenoblade > Mass Effect

One thing about the high quality WRPGs that I don't like is they generally don't seem to be all that high quality.

In all time, JRPGs, This gen, it's a tie between the two. Actually, if it wasn't for Oblivion/Skyrim, JRPGs would win again.

Up until this gen I would have always said JRPGs. Hell, I can still say my top favorite RPGs this gen were JRPGs. But as a whole, I think WRPGs are better right now. Not because western devs have really gotten much better, but because Japanese devs have just gotten so much worse.

WRPG's. I've given FF13-2 an honest try. I've played for about 4 hours and it's killed my fire for gaming. It's way too melodramatic and cheesy which sums up JRPGs in a nutshell.

It's always funny to see JRPG fanboys claim Demon's/Dark Souls as their own, when what makes them so great is that they look and play like WRPGs, but I understand the need to grasp for straws when the well is bone dry.

Same thing can be said about JRPGs, in fact I've yet to find a good quality JRPG this gen (hopefully Xenoblade will change that in April)

WRPG by a mile (in score and quantity)

TES4/5, Fallout3/NV, DeusEx3, ME2/3, DAO, BS:Infinite 1999mode(has more rpg than most JRPGs), DiabloIII, GuildWars2, KAO, etc. All better than most current main platform JRPGs.

Even the best JRPG in recent memory (Dark/Demon SoulS) were heavily influenced by WRPGs to the point where most people think DS is a WRPG until they see where the developer is located.

JRPGs.

I was just in a thread on Legacy Platforms, and the thread was asking what your favorite games are in your game collection. After sitting there and thinking about it for a while, it came to my suprise that all of my favorite franchises are Japanese, and I'm an American. My favorite franchises in gaming are Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda and Mario.

WRPGs are awesome. Some of my favorite games this gen are Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I can't get into Skyrim or Oblivion, but I can get really into the Fallout games. I didn't really like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, though. I have Mass Effect 1 and 2, but I'm not going to play ME2 until I complete ME1, and I just can't get into ME1. I have the DA:O Ultimate Edition with all the DLC, along with DA2, but I just can't get into those games. It's not that I don't like Bioware games either, because KOTOR was one of my favorite games last gen.

So while I still like WRPG games, I just like JRPG games more. Some of my favorite JRPG franchises are Phantom Brave, Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Tales and Souls. I just feel like JRPGs have better stories, better gameplay, better combat systems, better progression and stats, and better stylized graphics. I also like the fact that JRPGs aren't buggy compared to Bethesda and Bioware games.

The Souls games are WRPGs. Categorising games based on region rather than style makes no sense. That would be like calling many '80s/'90s American cartoons anime--including the likes of DuckTales, Animaniacs and Inspector Gadget--just because the art was actually done in Japan or South Korea or whatever despite not fitting the anime style at all.

Perhaps Japanese developers should start making WRPGs, because they clearly do a better job making Western RPGs than Western studios do, which is strange.

Obliterated.

Not that it matters, Skyrim beat out DS for RPGGOTy and GOTY. Also skyrim/oblivion have much higher averages at mc and gr.

I hope more Japanese follow the trend of Dark/Demon Souls and using the WRPG style.

They end up with far better games instead of the tired anime interactive movie garbage.

That's true, the way the RPG plays is the most important thing. Western studios can make JRPG influenced games, and it would still be a JRPG, but made by a western studio. Just like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls play like a WRPG, but they're made by a Japanese studio.

I think it's funny that the best WRPG games this generation were made by a Japanese studio, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. I mean, just compare the amazing combat system of the Souls games to a game with an archaic combat system like Skyrim. Perhaps Japanese studios should make more WRPGs from here on out, because it is obvious to me that they do a better job than western developers. Who knows, maybe the Japanese developers would be able to eliminate all the bugs that plague WRPGs as well.
