Splatoon 1 sold 5 million on the Wii U userbase. I can't wait to see how Splatoon 2 does now that it will be on an actual good system with good sales.

Yup. But at the same time, Splatoon 2 wont have that novelty factor the original had. But it should sell better, especially when Nintendo's marketing campaign seems to have gotten their shit straight.

Splatoon 2 has that major fanbase from the original game built right into it, though. The original game was an untested quantity trying to sell to a disengaged install base. The new game is the sequel to one of Nintendo's biggest hits of the last decade, selling to an active, engaged install base.

yea but like destiny 2....

will the 2nd sell like the first? the first one was new no one knew what to expect.

2nd one everyone knows the deal....so maybe now only loyal fans will buy and not newcomers?

...but....the switch is hot..... nintendo need a good marketing campaign because the recent splatoon commercial is just so-so

at least its geared to adults.....that's what i like about switch marketing.

Sigh.

Why do people have to bring other games into this. Even though I am a Persona fan it is no way one of the bigger RPGs in Japan let alone anywhere. It is way behind Final Fantasy, Zelda and Monster Hunter to name but three.

As far as Switch is concerned it is good for them and I hope they have a big seller.

R.I.P Persona 5 & FF? KBFloYd, this is bad Comedy for you lol.

But onto Splatoon 2, Splatoon is huge in Japan yes but Mario is still the biggest IP of all in Japan, so I actually expect to see Odyssey overshadow Persona 5 alone this October.

Given that the first one kept an active online community, the assumption is the game had an immense retention rate. So fans from the first game should be returning for the second one- and presumably, new Switch owners will be looking into this game as well, because of the word of mouth.

It's his shtick, he hates on Persona because it's PlayStation exclusive. Best to ignore it.

I don't even know what Persona and FF have to do with Splatoon. What, because Japan also like those franchises? :/

Why does that have to be a negative conversation? The success of one game doesn't diminish the success of another.

It's Floyd's shtick. Can't believe you guys haven't caught on to it yet :P

As for the notion that Zelda is a bigger RPG franchise than Persona- well, without getting into the question of whether or not Zelda is an RPG, the last three major Zelda games in Japan (pre-BotW) had sold less than 400,000 units, where Persona always averaged at least 400,000 units with each release. So no, there was definitely a time where Persona was more commercially viable in Japan than Zelda- BotW seems to have reversed that.

Ehh, it depends. Ranked, you'll definitely want some coordination wth your team members (albeit Splatoon on Wii U never had voice chat, and a thriving ranked scene). Unranked, it really doesn't matter one bit.

@charizard1605: I'm going to side with Zelda not being an RPG in the first place.

But really, diminishing the success of games that are well deserving of their popularity stinks. It's great that the Nintendo Switch and its games seem to have caught on in Japan but I'm not going with success being a zero-sum game.

the new one will have voice chat but friends only....

honestly...voice chat with randoms will consist of you cursing your ass off at those dumbasses.... i mean they are all japanese anyway and wont understand you.

I go back and forth on Zelda being an RPG. It's more of one than not- and BotW has delineated that distinction further.

Anyway, I do agree. Persona is actually the only series (on PlayStation) that has seen growth versus previous installments this generation- everything else has declined precipitously. Meanwhile, Breath of the Wild is restoring the kind of sales to Zelda that the series has not had in over a decade. Both games did well. Splatoon, of course, is a sales phenomenon, so naturally, other games don't compare, unless they're Monster Hunter or Pokemon.

True it is a very rare occurrence and I am the one making a positive claim here. However, unlike most new IPs, Splatoon actually did something new and had a novelty factor to it.

That said, we shall see what happens, I could very well see this sell 7+ million copies in Japan. If Nintendo plays their cards right. I just hope playing it safe wont bite them in the ass too much.

True it is a very rare occurrence and I am the one making a positive claim here. However, most new IPs are pretty banal, and even though they technicially have a new name on the box, many new IPs are in many ways the same old game with a different coat of paint. Splatoon was something new, not just because it was a new IP, but also because it was fresh, period, nothing really played quite like it. Maybe I am just too concerned that this sequel is playing it too safe. But ehh, this is just a personal hunch more than anything.

That said, we shall see what happens, I could very well see this sell 7+ million copies in Japan. If Nintendo plays their cards right.

Wat. Bro, like three games in history have sold at that level in Japan. That's not going to happen, like at all. 7 million plus worldwide? Sure, I can see that. 7 million in Japan alone? That's just crazy talk.

Well, you said Splatoon sold 5 million copies in Japan alone, right? (Edit: Misread what you said. 5 million worldwide. So I changed my guess)

Now put that on a console that actually has good marketing and a hypothetical scenario where Nintendo does a phenomenal job marketing ;)

Edit: I reread what you said. In that case, 7 million worldwide, does that sound better?

@charizard1605: I have never been to Japan so everything I read about their purchasing habits and gaming culture comes from the internet. I'm not too confident then in making assertions about what is and isn't dying there with any firm resolve. What I do understand though is that Persona is quite a successful series over there. Saying Persona, a game with very little in relation to Splatoon is dead because of these pre-orders is just...

Regardless of who is saying it, the thought of it in itself is just...

Yup, I agree. But you know what gaming culture is like: there can only be one.

Yeah, it is such a ridicilous comparison.

I dont see Persona 5 and Splatoon being mutually exclusive in any way. This is not a zero sum game. Success for Persona could very well mean Success for Splatoon and vice versa as both games could draw in more gamers to the industry. They are both competing for gamers time and money, but radically different release dates helps minimize this. And economics is not zero sum.

Yeah this place was a lot more boring without Charizard. So boring, I picked up Final Fantasy 14 just to fill in the void (I will also get splatoon and that purchase will not impact FF gaming habits in the slightest, so much for the OP's claim)

@Maroxad: @charizard1605: Like, does anyone actually live their lives with the belief that you need to be the best at something or else you may as well be dead?

Why is that logic an applicant for video games? I dunno. What could have been a great thread celebrating the incoming success of a super fun and unique shooter has been sullied and peed on. :P

@jumpaction: That mentality does exist. Especially among those who see economics as a zero sum game.

Yeah, lets celebrate a fun shooter, and bury the fanboyism.
