Apparently the 3DS sales was 400k from Nintendo's goal set for the launch.
For Nintendo, 3.61 million just isn't enough. That's the number of 3DS systems sold since launch, and it's approximately 400K short of Nintendo's launch goal, says company head Satoru Iwata. Speaking to investors today in Osaka, Japan, Iwata specifically noted (in an official translation), "Nintendo 3DS started very well but, on the other hand, did not perform as expected after the second week."
Iwata cited the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan earlier this year as a factor, but added, "I should not blame this situation just on the impact of the earthquake. There are other challenges that have shown up." Without being specific, he said that the company is "making efforts to get the popularity of Nintendo 3DS back on track for the upcoming summer season." How about, you know, some games we'd want to play?

Well, the high asking price of the DS isn't doing Nintendo any favors. The lack of killer applications and relatively lackluster launch is definitely another problem to rectify.
While, I have no doubt a slew ofNintendo properties (Mario/Zelda/DK/MarioKart/Metroid/Kid Icarus/Kirby/Pokemon) will rectify the 3DS library woes. I firmly believe (ever since the price was announced) the high asking price of the 3DS ($300 in Japan, $250 U.S.) is definitely going to have an negative impact on 3DS sales as parents looking for digital babysitters just won't spring that high.
This high price point launch is unlike the DS, GBA, GBC, and GB pricepoints. It's unlink Nintendo honestly, it's more something we saw with Sony and the PS3. The 3DS is a remarkable little piece of machinery, and has a bright future, no doubt, but this news of 3DS sales below expectations doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
Especially when great DS games like Pokemon can be played on the current DS/DS Lite/DSi.
