And contrary popular opinion also its gameplay ideas, because the gameplay in that franchise has been terrific sans MGS4.
Yep. I won't lie, for the most part I've enjoyed the story in these games. I would even say I was well invested with MGS1, 2 and 3. But that's not what kept me coming back to sink countless hours into the games, it was all about the interesting gameplay and pretty damn good (sometimes even great) level design. Even when Splinter Cell was cranking out superior gameplay on paper, it just didn't have the combination of mechanics, level design and AI that make the MGS games so extremely replayable. Even in tight corridors MGS exudes freedom and room for experimentation.
MGS4 is a funny one though. Far superior to its predecessors mechanically... wasted due to having weak level design/enemy placement for something like 70% of the game. Then you throw in the Octocamo system and the challenge of stealth is nearly broken.
Sucks because Octocamo served as a much needed streamlining of the MGS3 camo system. It was a great idea! They just made it a bit too effective. I'm so glad they're scrapping the camo index in MGSV. You just load out with whatever camo seems to be the best for the area. Made a really poor choice? Have mother base send out a change of clothes. But at no point is camo choice going to make or break your sneaking, it's just an added bit of cover. I think this system is better as it keeps you in the game rather than constantly worrying about how exposed you are based on a number. It gives the game an emphasis on obstacles and light/shadow play instead of camo being the ultimate crutch.
Aaaaaand I just went into full on tangent mode. Sorry bro. The MGSV hype is real.
