I think in the last decade people are watering down game genres, and trying to throw games into multiple genres.

I'm a big fan of CDPR but they are far from the kings of RPG and I wouldn't even consider their games true RPG's.

It seems like a kind of game where you can play the entire game like an FPS. Or you can instead choose to play the entire game without firing a single bullet. That's pretty RPG to me :)

Nah. I had more fun with Skyrim than Witcher 3. And Skyrim sucks. Other RPGs that are better than any CDPR game: World of Warcraft, Paper Mario, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights.. and probably way more games that I've never played, such as KotOR, Planescape: Torment, Divinity: Original Sin, Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity, etc.

Looking forward to CP2077 though. Not hyped, but interested. Worried it'll be boring after a few hours like Witcher 3 though. Very, very few developers can make open world games not feeling like a chore after a while, and from what I know, CDPR isn't one of the good ones in that department.

TW1 Enhanced = ugly but unique RPG with weird combat

TW2 = gorgeous but terrible controlling RPG with small awkward environments, bad pacing, but interesting branching story

TW3 = pretty great, but barely an RPG. More of an adventure game with some light story branching in the backdrop based on some light choices

CP = super hyped but delayed again and unproven theme and design choice for them

That's dumb. An RPG can be in any camera mode or combat style. That has nothing to do with the RPG factor.

But nearly all RPGs are heavy combat now, and are "action" rpgs. That's not the defining factor. They are all still RPGS, and then subgenre varies after that based off of combat style and camera style.

CP2077 is a full fledged RPG by any definition. His post was just wrong.

It's an open world rpg with a First Person view. Like TES. There is zero contention of this being an RPG first and foremast, it factually is.

I think I heard you can play it with killing very few people if you want.

Granted, the Witcher is a fantastic series, and I hope Cyberpunk is a good game as well, but you need more than one franchise to be "RPG King".

I'd say maybe Bioware (recent games might be mediocre, but they have a long history of great games) or Obsidian might be the RPG developer for me.

I'm sure there are some Japanese developers out there as well, but I don't really play JRPG's so I don't know.

In a sense, yes. Also seems like more RPG systems and fleshed out NPCs than those though, especially FO4.

Hard to argue that CDPR is the king of RPGs. While Witcher 3 is a good game, it offers only limited role playing possibilities. While you can change the outcome of certain quests, Geralt's character is largely fixed. You can't play Geralt as evil, for instance, or reshape the game world by helping one faction or another rise to prominence. It plays more like an action/adventure game compared to something like the Outer Worlds which allows for many dynamic twists and turns based on player choice.

You're either playing a role or you're not. RPG literally means "a game in which players take on the roles of imaginary characters who engage in adventures"

There is no RPG king especially since everyone is just throwing all types of RPG's into the ring and not taking into consideration sub genres and things like that. Great RPG's pop up from time to time, but they are usually scattered from a lot of different devs.
