Is 2023 already one of the best years in gaming in your opinion?

I would say so. We got two masterpieces; Resident Evil 4 Remake and Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. And if that isn’t enough to convince you, we got a bunch of upper tier games that are great too like Octopath Traveler 2, Dead Space Remake, Hi-FI Rush, Hogwarts Legacy, Like a Dragon remaster, Company of Heroes 3, Bayonetta Origins, Kirby Dreamland. Mega Man Battle Network, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Humanity. And if you’re still not convinced, we have the second half of the year which will have Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Forza 8 (presumably) and many other surprises. So what do you think, SW? Is 2023 already one of the best years in gaming in your opinion?

Yes, and you forgot redfall. It may not be in good condition now, but it's going to be amazing once the updates and fixes roll out.

For me not really, fairly average rando-year with very little interest in the new releases.

It's good, but I'm not playing many new releases. I got this habit of playing shit from like 30 years ago.

It's ok im glad Zelda came out this year. I hate that games are Remade sometimes, because you know the Star Wars series are the only films remade, I wish gaming was more permanent. IMO there's only a couple of remakes I like. RE4 already had a ps5 HD version that I bought right before the remake came out for $39.99.. so I was like WTF?

Absolutely! Xbox and Switch are just KILLING it in 2023! Great time to be a gamer for sure!

Resident Evil 4 is surprisingly masterpiece so for that its been definitely best in long time with STALKER 2 and Alan wake 2 around the cornor. with System shock releasing in few days.

Atomic heart was also really good.

If there were no bugs in Redfall, it would still be uninspired. Bug-free, 4k 60fps Redfall = 7/10 score.

Yeah it’s been a pretty damn good year so far. Street Fighter 6 is less then 3 weeks away. Final Fantasy 16 a few weeks after that. Crazy busy time right now.

Been a solid enough year for my preferences. Hi Fi and Pizza Tower are really good, and also the type of gameplay I can always revisit. RE4R was fun. TotK is definitely a standout title. Lots of potential goods on the way, with SF6 being a given for me.

Though at least half the good shit I played this year isn't from this year lol.

Shaping up to be a strong one, sure, but nah I wouldn't put it up there with my personal favorite years just yet. Currently probably comparable to 2019 or 2020 for what I'm into. Likely won't even be as good as 2017.

Like most things, I think "best year in gaming" comes down to perspective. For me, it's probably 1987.

And lets not forget, Callisto is the biggest disappointment we've had in over five years easily.

Then it's obvious you aren't looking hard enough as I'm having a blast so far with good games that have been released so far. It just depends on what you want to play of course.

As for the thread, yes but for me, every year is a good year but so far, a bunch of new games have been showing promising.

Personally im still waiting for my 2 GOTY games to release this year, so for now its a big ol NO from me.

That's one of those games you can almost exclusively play for a year. So yea, when that's officially released opinion will prob change.

Just gonna go in blind, not bothering with the beta. Haven't been following it much, so be nice to have an actual video game surprise for once.

Yes, Redfall really did shake the industry.

It's been solid. TotK is a legit GOAT title, and that alone makes it a great year. Hi-Fi Rush was a great surprise hit that felt like something new. Then you have a bunch of historical titles being remade or remastered which is cool but it's also feels like cheating.

Every year is a great year but it's cool that we're finally getting out of the pandemic damage.

I don't remember ever feeling like there was a best year ever, but Zelda and Spiderman alone are going to make it memorable for me. Hogwarts Legacy is fantastic. And I am hoping beyond hope that Starfield is amazing. I really want that game to be great.

I think it will be the best year since 2018 and that was an amazing year.

Resident Evil 4 remake, Dead space remake, Zelda:Totk and Jedi survivor have all been outstanding and we still have Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1, Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, Spider-Man 2 and Starfield.

It’s def been a good year, don’t think it’s been the best though. FF16 and Diablo IV and the new Armored Core look very promising so I may stand corrected soon (fingers crossed).

2023 has certainly already been a year to remember for sure. Though just last year, 2022 - gave us one of the best years ever.

Comparing them so far 2022 takes the lead. Lets look at the four best games of each year:

Elden Ring > Zelda TOTK (but two all time greats and will contend for GOTD in 7 years)

God of War: Ragnarök > Resident Evil 4 Remake (extremely close but GOWR slightly edges RE4R for me. Both might end up as the generations "best game not win the official GOTY")

The Last of Us remake > Dead Space remake, let us not forget that The Last of Us is the consensus second greatest video game in history. The reason I have this in third place for 2022 and not first place is because it is a remake and should get knocked down a couple notches. Still, remake of the 2nd best game ever made > remake of a video game that is not even in the top 200 best game of all time.

Horizon Forbidden West > whatever the 4th best game this year is.

Stray > whatever the 5th best game of the year is.

In 2022 we saw the release of three absolute gigatons (Elden Ring, GOWR & TLOUP1)

- so far this year we only have two (Zelda TOTK, RE4R)

Though we still have Diablo 4 and FF16 just coming up. Maybe there is a 10% chance Starfield is not crap so there is that as well.

2023 is only one or two heavy hitter away from surpassing 2022.

And as Armoured Core VI is a From Software game, it might just end up being one of those heavy hitters. Ditto to Death Stranding 2 if it releases this year.

Stray was a really good game.

Not GOTY material by any stretch of the imagination, especially in a year where Elden Ring and GOW:R released.

But it was a beautifully made game and yes, better than Dead Space remake. And also better than anything else released in 2023 except Zelda TOTK and Resident Evil 4 Remake of course.

Though I have a strong feeling that Armoured Core VI, Diablo 4, FF16, Starfield, Death Stranding 2 etc will all be better. But who knows, half of them could flop. all of them could. Maybe some of them delayed.

RE4, Dead Space, Metroid Prime and Zelda are some of the best games not only of the year in my opinion, but some of the best made games of all time, remakes or not. And the year is only half over.

I think it would definitely be the best year ever if the remakes weren't remakes and instead just titles that first came out this year.

Oh shit yeah, had Prime and RE4 been brand new titles, that'd tilt this scale in a huge way for me lol.

2023 has been good to us and better than 2022. Add Ravenlok to the list of good 2023 games. Intended for kids, Ravenlok is easy of course, but play it on hard and just enjoy.

Definitely looking to be a standout year for RPGs if FF16 and Starfield are good. I kind of consider Zelda an RPG.

Think most games we call RPGs really aren't. Don't think of Zelda as one at all, but not really interested in that old argument either way.

Is something like TW3 really an RPG? Seems more like an action adventure with stats. Not even picking on that game, so many of them seem that way.

I actually began praying on daily basis that Lords of the Fallen is what i imagine it being. Don't fail and this year has a massive boost for me.

@Mozelleple112: You'd be one of the very few who think Stray is better than DS Remake. I say this as someone who is not interested in either game, but if I was forced to choose between the 2 then DS remake would be an easy choice.
