Realistically speaking, how big of a factor is the pursuit of realism in video games? I eavesdropped today some teenagers judging games from how realistic they were, so I'm wondering if we got to a point where realism is a primary aspect when developing a video game that's appreciated by the young "core gamers".

When it comes to objectification of woman, it's very important.

When it comes to a war that millions of people died in, not a big deal.

Very for me. The more realism the better. Its better than kids games which is too much now thanks to manboys playing Nintendo games. I liked Nintendo with wii and before that. But Switch or North American fans mostly has more or less made me hate Nintendo due to it. Playstation, Xbox or PC however are cool

Not even a little bit. So long as the game conforms to basic rules that aren't completely disjointed, then a game can be as unrealistic as it likes.

Imo one of the important thing about realism is art style. Some games like horror games work much better with realistic art style than looking like a cartoonish game.

Survival Horror games should also be more realistic in the terms of main character abilities to not turn into an action hero video game trend.

when i was a kid (this was likely 1980 or so) school had one of those educational films made by Disney and they coined a term that stuck with me but I havent seen it used since.

'fictional realism'

that is not 'realism' per-se but rather it makes sense in that fictional world.

for me in games however this is nice but not as important as engaged task lists and how that has a certain pace and choice

Depends on the game. For the most part, I play games to escape reality.

I think Medal of Honour on PS2 was pretty good. Medal of Honour Rising Sun or something. FEAR or Condemned is pretty nice.

I guess it depends on the game. Though I do prefer to play games that are less realistic than "get shot once, die, start from the very beginning". I'm not that much of a sadomasochist.

Realism is the most important thing in gaming.

It’s the main things games can improve in.

Otherwise you are left with N64 gameplay with cartoon graphics.

Nintendo should be bankrupt for awhile, flood the gaming market with realistic games. Think that would make manboys stop for awhile

He has a point though. Mario is for kids or family. Playstation and xbox or PC for that matter atleast is fair and dont have bunch of manboys obsessing over Kirby games. So having a console or system made for everyone whether kids or adults is better, trying to flood the market with game realism would just be good and healthy for the obsessive manboys living in USA

Pokemon is for swaggers, not manboys. Manboys only like Nintendo and Kirby mostly. If anything it would be better if Pokemon left Nintendo and developed realistic pokemon games on PS4 or PC

Depends. It's not essential, though. We've had so many years of cinematic games that nearly everyone here has been brainwashed to believe it is.

To me it is. I grew up with a Coleco Vision. Was into Music and Instruments are very expensive and could not have both. So Never really had an interest in buying a console for many years until I stopped by a friends house and they were playing Forced Unleashed on a 360 with a big Screen TV. I could not believe it. I bought my first Xbox soon after.

It helps with immersion. I remember a Call of Duty game where I had to stab a guy in the neck and his facial expression was just so real to me. It was kind of disturbing, but awesome at the same time. Red Dead 2 on my X blew me away in the first 5 minutes!

So excited to see what the future has in store. #GamingForLife

I agree less cinematic is ok. Thats why Zelda should not have a story. But either case it needs to be realistic looking. Like Call of Duty realistic

I mean it is true. Just look at who owns Nintendo Switch, and compare it to people who play Xbox One or Playstation 4 or Steam. They tend to first of be variable of kids and adult games, while Nintendo is almost all kids games. They even in 1993 tried to force companies to make child friendly games due to video game violence hysteria back then backed by the democrats back then, so SEGA got all the blame even though SEGA is ten times cooler than Nintendo. Luckily Playstation came and saved the day, thats why SONY playstation is always my hero. Meanwhile in USA with Atari Crash the childish population just went with nintendo because it benefited from a failed market with Atari, instead of actually going over to a more sensible thing like computer games or wait for the SEGA Master System etc.

Some genres demand it, some don't. Flight sims? Sure. FPS games? I don't demand total realism in them. But, if their theme is based on reality, at least, have a semblance of it in gameplay. Do I want to see BotW's mechanics in a Far Cry game such as climbing walls with bare hands like a spider? Of course, not. But, the grappling hook and rope would be fine.

There are games that take realistic micromanagement to the extreme such as the Misery Mod for STALKER: Call of Pripyat. I think it's way overkill and kills all the fun in playing.

Depends on the person and theme. If you are going for realism, I'll judge you on how you achieve it, but my favourite ever racer is outrun 2 and the game is incredibly unrealistic but it achieved what they were going for.

Don't think any detractors of the game are going to be crying any time soon about a game whose sales were below expectations and received a lukewarm reception. It's not a big enough success to cry over.

Nah that one is good. It looks realistic, same with Metal Gear Solid games. It has a realistic feel to it, so those qualify. Same with games such as Shadow the Hedgehog, its fine if its like that

Shadow the Hedgehog. I hope they never make Sonic Mania or anything in that style again. If they are gonna make 2D sonic game, ok but make it 3d graphics and not dated graphics. I like Tomb Raider 1 on PS1, but its not like i want newer games to have that. Like Oddworld new n tasty is good, i prefer PS1 but i can highly recommend both PS4 and PS1.

Either case, Shadow the hedgehog easily since they develop and is not stuck in the past, unlike Mario which is family friendly and for little kids. Which grown up adults should not be playing in the first place, unless if you have a family or something

Just be consistent with the rules your own in-game universe. Create a believable world. We can suspend our disbelief, even if it's "unrealistic." But break your own rules, and it ruins the immersion.

Often they play these types of games. So having realism will pretty much make them go away. So i think it rules, thats why realism is the cure.

@sauer21: wow...well to each their own. I got zero enjoyment out of Shadow the Hedgehog and hours of crazy fun with Sonic Mania. I will always choose fun over realism in video games.

But see Shadow the Hedgehog is also good for another way. First of all it has a development that modern Sonic games are about and not the backward past games. And 2nd, it is a good game to cure furries. Nothing kills it more than an angry hedgehog with a gun in a world of realism. Their sensitive mind just cant handle it. Just saying it is very good game. I mean sure nothing beats Sonic Adventure series. But it is good stuff, just put it in and there you go.

It obviously depends on the game and genre. Some games call for realism, or at least some pseudo realism with certain amounts of detail. I don't think too many people want "total realism" in terms of physics and pacing, but there are many genres that benefit with each leap in graphics. (shooters, racers, open worlds, etc).

On the other hand, stylized games can pretty much ignore "realism" in favor of pretty art.

Realism only matters in a game that is trying to be realistic.

other games that don't aim to be realistic, it could have less or no importance at all depending on the game.

Realism is the most important thing in gaming.

It’s the main things games can improve in.

Otherwise you are left with N64 gameplay with cartoon graphics.

Well factually this is false. There are many games that sport "cartoon" (the more correct term is stylized but all games are stylized some more than others) graphics and if you think that stylization of graphics in games peaked out at n64 then you are not critically thinking.
