Yes, I totally and utterly believe that without HDMI, you physically could not see well enough to play games. Without HDMI, the game is just a black screen

You dont need HDMI to get HD. :/ Every 360, even the arcade, can use HD component cables to get an HD picture. :|

If you hook up a professional machine to test lag, it might come up with some number saying there is. In terms of using your eyes and ears to play a game, you will never ever notice even the slightest bit of lag. So no, not really.

I had an old Pro system with component for a long time...and it annoyed me enough that I finally bought an Elite. The picture quality really is better, plus it's easier to integrate into my home theater receiver.

Component cables look identical. You must have been using COMPOSITE cables which is the red white and yellow (technically just the yellow) cable, which is low definition. Perhaps you should test out xbox on component cables, which are red, green, blue, and red/white for audio, then compare.

well i have a post grad diploma in computer science so i am qualified to hook up the 5 plugs involved in the component cable. i still work with a consultant though to ensure the connection is correct. matching those all up is just crazy. :P but yeah...thats how i hook mine up to the telly.....the highly complex component cable. looks fine. i have a PS3 that uses HDMI and it doesn't seem to make a jot of difference in terms of image quality.

I use component on the worst sdtv ever created, no special headphones or boosting. And I get maybe 1st-3rd on every Modern Warfare 2 match I play, always going above a 2000 score. It may look worse, but I'm the kind of guy that doesn't care about looks ( aka system wars graphics ) and It doesn't effect my playing.

I don't know why people always conflate caring about picture quality with being a graphics whore. It makes no sense.

If your monitor supports 1080p output then naturally, the best picture you can get on xbox360 would be through an HDMI connection.. I would be willing to bet, however, that only a small percentage of xbox360 users even HAVE an HDTV, and of those who do, most of those sets likely only support 780p/1080i at best...

I bought an HD TV recently, but it was just for the console (nothing else I hook up does HD), so I bought a 720p model because it was cheaper and very little games are native 1080p.

You need it for the best HD though. The cables are cheap, so anyone that is able to use an HDMI cable definitely should

Arcade comes with an HDMI input......HDMI Cables are $5 dollars....

I agree that Component doesn't look as good as HDMI, but it does look good regardless. I hooked up an xbox at my GF's house with only Component and it looks great, of course mine is connected with HDMI though.

If you have an HDMI input, use it. If you don't, not a big deal, use components.

The image normally comes out really jaggy, and you have blur things down to get it to look okay. Unfortunately my 360 doesnt have HDMI, and my TV on VGA locks out too many colour settings so things look washed out.

HDMI is pretty much essential for me. It looks better, is less of a cord mess, less bulky, and sounds better. You probably won't notice any differences between component and HDMI on some TVs, but the difference is pretty obvious on a 42" 1080P Plasma.

You don't need HDMI for 1080p if you have a TV that can accept 1080p over component. HDMI and component looks the same for TVs that can accept both in 1080p (this is verified with a 67" Samsung DLP). Component is digital, just like HDMI. HDMI is convenient because it couples audio and video in 1 cord. Also media companies love it because it can mandate encryption between device (for anti-piracy, although the algorithm was cracked a couple of years ago)

Someone above said that it makes a difference in audio. There is no difference in the sound from audio between HDMI and optical. Its all digital.

Component is most definitely analog...

Also I have never had a TV that accepts 1080p over component...I'm not even sure which ones do.

Are you by chance blind?? Cause even the arcade unit come with a HDMI port, just like the Elite and the Pro (Pro is gone now) The A, B, X, Y button's on the controller and are colored and last time I checked, you don't need a HDMI (hell you don't even need a TV) to see the controller.

As far as I know, Component cables are analog cables and the highest signal they accept is 1080i. Also, no TV accepts TRUE 1080p over component, you always need a HDMI cable

Indeed. I used component all the way up until 2007, which is when I bought my first 1080p set. If you have a non-1080p set, then component looks just dandy in HD. Same with a 1080p set. I had to wait a week before I received my cables in the mail, thus I used component on my 1080p set for a week and it looked great. It looks a tad bit better and sounds better with HDMI, though. But what the TC states? Sorry, but nah!
