JRPG games are starting to bore me...Im a big fan of Final Fantasy and KH but when FF 13 came out I was so pissed of the gameplay. They should add more City where you can enter and talk to.Choices of Good or bad like Western RPGs. But when KH 3 comes out im sure JRPGs will get back on their feet.

FF13 was horrible. If you took away the graphics its actually 100 steps backwards from FF 7, and ps1 game.

Adult characters, more adult theme and story, better dialogue, a different overall look and feel, a different type of mythology... I'm not saying they have to make it dark or bitter or anything, but why can't it have characters who could actually exist in a real world? MGS4 is a good example of a J-Dev doing a pretty good job with western characters and archetypes, with a few exceptions. Even Uncharted 2, though still a T game, has a much more realistic and mature approach to dialogue and story-telling. They need to divorce JRPGs from anime, basically. Realize that you can take the fundamentals of a JRPG and work it in a way that has nothing to do with anime, doesn't involve 12-year-old characters with giant swords and huge green afros and stuff. It's just a bit much to take. The story in something like Mass Effect actually gets me involved, I love the world and the characters, whereas FF13 for the most recent example of a JRPG, I couldn't stand the story or theme from the very start of the game.

JRPGs are stale now (only a few try to do something unquie). There isnt much they can do, becuz then they wouldnt be RPGs, they would be adventure games, action adventure, or hack and slash.

It wasn't that horrible, but your right the graphics were amazing. It was just the options and gameplay. Im not really a turn-based player. Im more of action based like the upcoming Final Fantasy Versus 13.

The reason you hate FF XIII is because they have changed it in some misguided attempt to have wider appeal, and failed. If anything i think they need to get back to their roots but start hiring some professional writers for the story.

1) Drop the awful kiddie characters. No more girls in skirts and lingerie, boy-men with dumb hair and whiney personalities, or silly characters added for "comedic effect".

2) Recognize the "game" part of "video game"...too much focus on cutscenes.

3) Ease up on the dramatics...it's to the point of silliness. The crying, whining, and overreacting makes playing/watching these games unbearable and cringe worthy.

4) Take notice of western/european systems like item systems, combat, and other areas.

I think the turn based element needs to be abandoned ,not completely that would alienate a lot of players, but with bigger franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It makes battles a bit of a chore in my opinion. For the record Im a huge fan of the Tales of Vesperia system. Im happy with the storys they weave... there is ALWAYS something that makes you go "holy crap... didnt see that coming". What they DONT need to do is copy Western RPG's, though I adore them, the JRPG's have a certain charm about them...

FF13 was doing something different. you want it to be FF7 all over again ? if it was ff7, people would complain that they just copied the ff7 formula. you want to change all the things that make jrpgs what they are. the kiddy characters the huge swords, the light hearted spirit. and you are behaving like all jrpgs are the same. they definately are not.

FF13 wasn't THAT bad....but it's a darn shame we waited for over 5 years to see one of the biigest next-gen JRPG's only to get gimped by 360 development.

Release even more of them on Nintendo DS. A JRPG and a "next-gen console" don't go along together well at all.

JRPG Art Styles, characters and enviroments ... but with WRPG gameplay. Bioware is an example of good rpg direciton .... but lack secrets/enviroments and character designs (Mass Effect being the only exception to this rule).

THey need to grow up... and by that I mean, they either need to stop it with the convenient angle's in cutscenes that just happen to show the young girls panties.... they have two options imo.... either jump in, and give us T&A... or just cut it out altogether.

This is one of many ways they could improve the genre.

Another is obvious... cut the amount of emo, whinyness from little boys down by 99%. Also, there are more than 2 hair styles in existance... hair styles don't consist of just "spiky" and "hanging in my face emo'ness"

I really hate it when people say JRPGs need to "evolve". Come on, that's just beating around the bush. Every time you guys say they need to "evolve" it's just a code for saying "We want Japanese developers to make Western RPGs". What JRPGs should do is just be JRPGs. They should be what the developers wants them to be, and if it takes, great. If not, well, that's too bad. I'd rather they die than become homogenized me too WRPG fantasy games with bad AI and busted morality systems and an illusion of choice, which almost always boils down to "total bastard" or "absolute saint".
I think the turn based element needs to be abandoned ,not completely that would alienate a lot of players, but with bigger franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Stalker? No, apparently I just have a good memory.

On to the subject at hand however, is there any proof that content was removed *SOLELY* because of the 360? I've been in these debates before, and no proof (and I use the term "proof" lightly) has ever been forthcoming.

You're just making assumptions, which have no base in a debate talking about facts.

A conclusive post providing proof, beyond a reasonable doubt would be sufficient to prove me wrong. If you want to try, go ahead, and I will be willing to accept i'm wrong... You know, unless you post complete garbage ;)

FF13 is exactly the game Square-Enix intended it to be. The multiplatform status of the game came VERY late in it's development cycle. They finished the game on PS3, and then ported it to X360. The only thing the X360 held back was the X360 version of the game, which had to use compressed video and sound outside gameplay to fit on three discs.

Have narrative exposition occur in-game, no more turn based combat, and full character customization would be a big plus in my view. Plus, more dark, morally complex characters would be a nice change from the plucky types the current games seem to be so fond of.

So... you just want them to be WRPGs. :|

Here is a crazy suggestion, how about you and people who want stuff like that just... play WRPGs? :?

Also, do you know just how few of these games even have turn based combat now, seriously?

Make them not so slow. For a game about the story, make it not so crappy with cliche characters. More customisation. They should develop new ideas for JRPG's on the Nintendo DS and not worry about breaking even and sales.

The characters for RPGs aren't cliche. Atleast they have personalities. I don't see how any of the characters from first person shooters have something better than the characters from RPGs.

EDIT: What is wrong with physical appearance. Let me say this:

FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS HAVE MEN IN ARMORED ALIEN SUITS FROM OUTER SPACE. THEY HAVE SHORT HAIR JUST LIKE REAL PEOPLE.

The whole point of physical appearance is style of course alot of JRPGs have alot of girls wearing min skirts and all that but still i could say the same about first person shotoers, and WRPGs.

Yes.

I don't play JRPGs because they are not my "cup of tea", so to speak. However, I think the people who play them enjoy them because they are different than WRPGs. To each his/her own. Further, I wouldn't wantWRPG developers to try and emulate JRPGs.

If devs took some JRPG's such as Star Ocean or ToV and turned them into shooters with stats and dialogue (Ala Mass Effect. And yes I understand that's a simplified description) would we still consider them JRPG's? Do we consider Kingdom Hearts a JRPG? Again I point out that we ask for an evolution from something we have problems classifying in the beginning. And in what way would we define an evolution? How large of a change does it take to make that statement? How have other "genres" evolved lately?

As long as they still have an anime style, they will never improve. Anime is one of my most repetitve and exaggerated forms of animation out there. The girlish-looking boys, the long pink hair, giant swords, and overly expresive little sounds the characters make. Frankly, it's garbage next to something as stunning and intricate as Mass Effect's incredible style and design. That's why it will never touch WRPGs.
