Hands on with The Witcher 3 for Switch

No one buys games on the switch for the high resolution graphics, its for the portability.

Being able to play games like dark souls and the witcher on a handheld device is fantastic and to many, worth sacrificing graphics for it. Nintendo is still king of the handhelds, id say more now than ever, no one gives a crap about the nvidia shield or psp. Nintendo owns the handheld space, always has.

While I’ll be sticking with TW3 on pc it’s still cool they made it happen on a handheld like this. Definitely not the best way to play this one unless you are mainly a on the go gamer.

But I can play it on the toilet.

I wonder if it has anything to do with Nintendo. How big of a cut does Nintendo take? It seems all of their games are horribly overpriced well after release.

Even if you had one of those nvidia shield things at 1080p/60fps, why would you want to play this game on the go?

The damn game has like 50 years worth of cutscenes.

Can switch owners even get through the tutorial/beginning of the game without their switch dying?

It takes forever to actually get to the open world part. I bet the battery dies before you can even save the game.

I mean, how good does this game look on your $300 phone? I'm pretty impressed that they crammed it all in there somehow. Not sure it's for me though. I mean, I have a PC right here with all the content installed.

I bought Xcom on Android and it looks and plays pretty great, but the issue is: I never play on my phone. Why would I do it when I always have access to my PC and consoles? I just see no point to it.

@R4gn4r0k: Oh I just meant that, it's easy to see that it's not the best looking version but I'm still impressed because the Switch it's not a big box like a PS4. It's only a bit bigger than a phone and pretty cheap for such small hardware, and it can still run The Witcher 3.

I never play games on my phone either. I don't like having my paws on the screen while playing. A stylus is OK. But it's far from ideal. My phone gets really hot when playing games, too, and runs out of battery fast.

I played witcher 3 on 4k with my pc and that image doesn't look that bad.... I kinda want to buy it just so I can play the game again but not sit at my computer.

Yeah, impressive for the Switch, but lackluster in general. I always thought this would be a struggle for Switch.

What do you expect? It's a handheld ffs. I think it looks/runs remarkably well considering.

It shouldn't get a free pass because it is on shit portable hardware. It needs to be compared to the other versions of the game. X1 and PS4 versions were already bad. Switch version is a joke. For those who want it on the go, it is perfectly fine on gaming laptops and not the Switch.

It's a dedicated hybrid/handheld console, and should be compared to similar devices.

Yes, if you're only going to play it in docked mode, and you own another system, then of course you'd play it on something else (and the XB1 X version is great btw).

And saying those who want to play it on the go should just play it on a gaming laptop, again, how ridiculous.

I don't know what anyone was expecting really. I'm amazed again they managed to squeeze it onto Switch at all. Should be a good way to play.

The awesomeness goes away with the Switch version and it is definitely a compromised experience on the other consoles. PC version is far superior and it is the way to play. :)

I won’t be getting this, but I’m pretty impressed by the port.

For the hardware that is running on it is a bonafide miracle in general. I think it looks fine for a handheld device. With that being said I would skip the TV mode all together. It would look horrendous on a big screen.

It looks fine considering it's running on a handheld in 720p. I don't buy multiplats on Switch so I have no bias. Some people are just looking for an excuse to hate on it since it's selling like hotcakes and has an impressive exclusive lineup.

A cartridge with the size of a Blu-Ray disc (almost), that really has me in awe.

I was curious to see how it would run on Switch. I gotta say I'm impressed and the game actually looks very playable. I don't see myself getting it, I completed it recently on PC. Also the price baffles me; not just that it's fully priced, but on the Canadian eshop it is even 4$ more expensive than full price (83.99$ vs 79.99$).

I think the Switch is an experiment, with the hypothesis being "if we promise people they can play a game anywhere, then they won't care if it looks like absolute garbage".

Good for Nintendo for being focused on gameplay, even if it is regressive and pointless.

That is definitely something to consider.

I for one love the idea of mobile console (not cell phone) gaming (doubly-so if you can stream it at modest quality), it's just not for me.

I don't think it looks too bad. Certainly way better than I expected it to.

Some kind of Switch/vita handheld device where you could stream all your PC games onto. That would be neat.

I preordered it... Its exactly what I bought into the switch for... Big AAA games on the go. I also really have loved the visuals on the switch... Dark souls looked great and played great in handheld mode, I also just played the dragon quest 11 demo. Looks great! Played great.

Witcher 3 is more than worth the asking price, considering the content, but it's far cheaper on other platforms... So I guess that's sketchy but I don't know what I kind of resources they've dedicated to porting it either.

As a switch gamer, I'm super happy.

@Pedro: this version is qualitatively different than x1base or ps4 base, making those versions look futuristic compared to this tho. I mean, look at the performance in handheld mode; it speaks for itself...

Props on them getting it to run on switch, but the cost (performance and visuals wise as well as mulah) is a bit much.

Doesnt look great, but eh... it's a handheld.

I would still just get it on PC though.

I see people defending this because you can play on the go. I can do that with the PS4 version as well thanks to Remote Play and it looks and runs better than this.

It's good to see it running on there but really who is buying it when it's like £7.99 game of the year edition on PS4.
