If you weren't around during the Halo 1 era (2001) then you missed out. Sure you have Halo 3, but Halo 1 was some of the best gaming experiences to be had.

It goes Counterstrike 1.3, Halo 1, Timesplitters, Goldeneye, UT99, Quake 3

Best FPS's in order.

I disagree, and evidently so do you, since you put CS 1.3 in front of Halo CE.

No, it was the best FPS on consoles which, let's face it, wasn't particularly hard.

Very good game, and gave me many enjoyable hours, but in retrospect I don't think it is IMO... It was fairly revolutionary at the time, but now we look back it's fairly mediocre (probably because we've seen so many games cut + paste the same formula)

Um... no not really. Great game, no doubt. As a fan of single player games, I like Halo 1 more than any other Halo game (although OSDT looks great). But I don't think it's close to the best.

I liked Halo 3 a lot more... in fact, though it may surprise some, I loved Halo 3... especially the art style. However, I don't think it is as epic as people make out.

This is true but it is still a great game considering it did so much, I could curse it for what it has done but I have too many fond memories of sitting around with everyone and pwning each other across 2 TVs.

Stop living in the present fool, today's games suck compared to the PS2/XBOX gen. Hell, the N64 era killed this one. So unoriginal, so bland, so cliche, so copy+paste, SO-MUCH-FAIL. Take the time to learn about gaming before you give orders.

The good old days when you didn't get bashed for liking Halo. Halo 2 is the best. I'll always love Halo. The series is really great if you know a lot about it that includes reading the books. Halo series only gets hate because of success, popularity, and bad stereotypical fanbase

Unfortunately, I was around on the FPS scene long before Halo came out so I got spoiled and saw Halo as just another average shooter.

I completely agree, Halo 1 was one of the best FPS's I've ever played, the story, the gameplay, it was revolutionary, 2002 was a year I spent playing that game a lot. However, Halo 2 and Halo 3 were awful, hate to say it, but they were nothing like the experience of the first one.

Obiviously the 1 billion games played thing is just part of the Microsoft propaganda to reaffirm the fanboys that they're still strong and whatnot, they could've said that like a month earlier but then no one would've cared. MS's recent activities to throw pretty much everything they have against the killzone 2 launch in itself is their own expression of acknowledging they're in trouble.

I completely agree. Halo CE seemed kind of dull and disappointing(especially the campaign), and the online was only fun if you played with people you knew(and that can be said for most games).

The Online in Halo CE was broken. Horrible net code so the game lagged pretty much all the time.

You need to go back even more time. Like the mid 90s. How about when Tribes was popular. Then Halo's release looses a lot of umph.

Please, those ratings mean nothing, Halo is so run-of-the-mill its not even funny, and its people like you (who have probably only played a handful of FPS games in your life), that start throwing around ratings and "Best FPS of all time" like its second nature.

PC games have STANDARDS, Dating back to Half life 1 which as GS put it "the closest thing to a revolutionary step the genre has ever taken", Halo is nothing new to this genre, and as Jango put it, was only Scored high because there was nothing to compare it to besides goldeneye and PD, and remember that PC games don't have generations, meaning that any PC game up to today has to be compared with some of the best games on its platform, which is why most modern FPS online games fail because CS/Quake 3/Battlefield/Unreal and countless others set the bar SO high that they fail to live up to them.

Get some history before you start throwing rating out like its nothing.

Halo may be run-of-the-mill now because of the mass FPS boom that followed Halo, but back in 2001, this game was revolutionary, and I don't understand why no one can admit that Halo: Combat Evolved is a superb game. Halo changed the whole genre, even for PC's. Games like Timesplitters 2, Jedi Knight 2, Far Cry, and a handful of other FPS's followed after Halo came out WITH THE SAME CONTROL SCHEME AS HALO. No other console FPS before Halo had double thumb stick to look around, it was unheard of. My point is that in 2001 Halo was recognized as one of the best FPS's of all time, and it might not seem that way now because the genre is SO crowded now. Halo 1 is still amazing in my book.

cept Halo was a very medicore game for an FPS title. It may have been good on consoles but thats because consoles only played Perfect Dark and Golden eye.

Explain the 9.7 on both gamespot and IGN. Was this just a fluke that it has a 95% ranking overall and is known as one of the best FPS's of all time?

First of all, how do those ratings mean nothing? If we're throwing those out the window all we have is an opinionated rating system that changes from person to person, which is no way to argue because no one could ever win. Secondly, thinking Halo is one of the best shooters of all time is not a consolite-specific opinion. I've played a LOT of shooters in my day, from Perfect Dark and Golden Eye to Counter-Strike, Battlefield 1942 and 2142, the Call of Duty games, Ghost Recon, etc. etc. It's a GOOD game. Ratings and its fan base reflect that, you can't just arbitrarily brush that off just because you think it's awful. Thirdly, this whole PC has higher standards is such a pile of steaming turd. Hermits seriously need to get off their high horse, you guys are the most annoyingly obnoxious group of fans on any videogame forum anywhere because all of you are such stuck up elitists that think they're smarter than everyone. Your opinion =/= fact.

Halo CE was the second game I got for my Xbox back when it was brand new. I really liked it, but I wasn't blown away or anything even as a console FPS (in which Goldeneye pioneered the genre on consoles). So saying that it's one of the best shooters is something that I'll have to respectfully disagree with. But I'm not going to say that the original HL is far superior because it gave me the same reaction Halo CE did. Both are excellent games that are a tad bit over appreciated IMO.
