I know, "LOL Kotaku" link

Today GOG announced GOG Connect. It’s a clever use of Steam’s API that lets you link one Steam account with GOG. You’ll then get DRM-free versions of Steam games you’ve purchased. Rather than glorified game rentals as dictated by the Steam Subscriber Agreement and the service’s own ups and downs, you get DRM-free versions. They’re GOG-friendly, but GOG’s client, Galaxy, is completely optional. As PC game clients go, though, it’s pretty slick and has a few features Steam should seriously consider adopting. It’s at least worth a look.

There are, however, a few catches. For one, any link you make is permanent (no switcheroos once you’ve downloaded a haul of DRM-free games), and if you manually delete or refund a game in your Steam library, GOG can and probably will remove it from your GOG library as well. Second, the whole program is contingent on agreements with participating game publishers, and the resulting list of games compatible with GOG Connect is... not huge. Actually, scratch that: it’s downright anemic. While GOG assures us that more games are on the way, the full list as of now is:

- The Witness

- FTL: Faster Than Light

- The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut

- Galactic Civilizations 3

- Trine Enchanted Edition

- Saints Row 2

- Shadowrun Returns

- The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

-Bit.Trip Runner

-Braid

-Breach & Clear

-Breach & Clear: Deadline

-Broken Sword: Director’s Cut

-Mount & Blade

-Project Zomboid

-Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring

-To The Moon

-Two Worlds

-Unreal Gold

-Unreal Tournament GOTY

-VVVVVV

-Xenonauts

This is great news. When given a choice, I always choose GOG over Steam. It'll be helpful for those who bought old games from Steam instead of GOG, where they are optimized to run well on modern systems and come with mods/patches.

GOG Universe would be the way to go if more people used it and they had more games damn it.

I don't care enough, been on Valve's network for 15 years, never had even a single problem, I don't care.

Eh, I don't really see the point for someone like me. I know a lot of people are super-anti-drm, but I very rarely have issues with steam and I have no plans to crack or modify any of my software for my own needs.

They do have games, a huge classic backlog and indy games. I do hope they can get more current titles in the service.

Everyone says they buy from GOG to support DRM-less games, but I suspect this doesn't happen anywhere near as much people say.

I honestly don't care about the DRM stuff, its really just pricing at certain times and I just like universe's layout better.

Its more simple and there's a bunch of classic games.

This is probably the best back-up plan for when Steam goes down :P

But then again, if that were the case GOGs servers would explode.

Great news!!! Never was a fan of Steam!!!

As soon as I can get rid of it, it'll be done, if GoG can help in that matter, that's really great.

Sure, but having choices and drm free at that, is a good thing no matter what!!!

I got 6 games out of this.

Hope Day of the Tentacle gets added. I didn't think about checking GOG when that game came out and bought it for Steam.

Can't steam just drop the DRM for publishers that don't want DRM?

Would make a lot of sense to drop DRM entirely after 1 year.

Agree, but its cool Steam is allowing this. GOG helps with Steams oversaturation of games. Valve just sends games they dont want no more to GOG.

If publishers/developers dont want their games on steam to have any drm they can do so,plenty of games on steam dont have any drm, most people just dont realise that, you can start them from the game install folder without even launching steam.

Wow that is really cool, even though the list is very limited right now. Seems like an overall win for consumers.

Though to be fair I've never actually had any issues with Steam's DRM. I've heard that there is a two week offline limit, I've also heard this was a bug and has since been removed. I don't remember the last time I've been without internet for two weeks. The only issues I've had have been with Ubisoft games because they require a 3rd part DRM solution (Uplay); which is arguably not even a big deal, I just don't like having redundant software installed on my machine.

I don't get why they'd cooperate like this. After all, if libraries on each are interchangable then wouldn't they still be in contention about the revenue split of sales? How'd they work that out?

But if you want to share a game to your friends or family, it requires no login or verification, it just works like borrowing a SNES game.

Steam as DRM honestly doesn't bother me, so I won't utilize this. Definitely cool for those who prefer the games DRM free.

DRM holds back games and can sometimes cripple optimization. DRM free games are able to benefit everyone!

Well, i'm not referencing DRM as a whole. I did specify Steam as a DRM doesn't bother me.

Steam itself is DRM, this is an oxymoron.

This is true. I've had issues with games on origin and steam in the past, duds are not infrequent on those services. Never a single problem with GOG games though, plus no drm so i'm strictly GOG now and have been for a while.

And they'll only continue to get bigger!
