Ms without Bungie is like Oreo without the white stuff...

"For an unstated, but significant amount of money, Bungie shareholders bought the studio name back from Microsoft. Our source also revealed that even though Microsoft will retain the rights to Halo, Microsoft also has "the right of first refusal on future games." This means that Microsoft has the first shot at publishing Bungie's future titles. How this will come into play if Bungie decides they want future game X to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Wii alongside an Xbox 360 release will make things quite interesting."

No but Microsoft can sell the shares back to to Bungie. How do you think Rare left Nintendo. Nintendo sold all interest back to Rare and then Rare sold themselves to Microsoft.

MS still retains first right to Bungie games and Bungie gets to use MS tech. Not much is different except that Bungie can make games besides Halo (Thank god, since I wanted Halo to end with a trilogy!).

EDIT: If this is true. I just realized you are being misleading in your topic. It is still very much in the rumor range.

That still doesn't make it a confirmation, also a confirmation would have a headline without a question mark in it.

First right to Bungie games, or the First right to Bungie games on the Xbox brand... I mean Bungie could get other publishers but I doubt Microsoft would publish a game for the DS or Wii or PS3.

Well in theory if Bungie, which I believe is a publicly traded company, gains the majority of the shares they can basically buy back ownership from Bungie.

Of course MS will still retain the rights to all future Halo games and get first dibs on publishing any Bungie made game.

Can't blame the team though. To Halo fans they can't get enough of the game, but to the devs, who miss out on family and friends because they are constantly locked down for 12 hr shifts thinking about a big green soldier with even bigger freakin guns, you can understand why Bungie may want to do something else.

Not to mention the chance to quiet the critics that claim Bungie is a one trick pony dev.

Which leads me to believe Bungie will still be making 360 exclusives and MS couldn't refuse a nice chunk of change. Since MS has first dibs on all future Bungie games you know they are not gonna let them be on any other console. If all this is true that is.

Hmmm so Microsoft sold their interest in Bungie back to them? Then if that's true Bungie no longer works for Microsoft.

Still, this doesn't change things much. Microsoft still retains rights to Halo and has the right to publish all of Bungie's future games, so the only thing this really changes is a change in ownership.

Why wouldnt MS let them do that anyway? Let your best devs make a new hit franchise while you have two other Halo games in development.

Yes, since Microsoft owns Bungie, they have the power and capacity to do whatever they want with it - including selling it to other owners if they wanted to. Who says they wouldn't do that? All they really care about is the the intellectual property rights which would be retained. It's not like Halo is going to Playstation.

No but Microsoft can sell the shares back to to Bungie. How do you think Rare left Nintendo. Nintendo sold all interest back to Rare and then Rare sold themselves to Microsoft.

No, what happened were the owners of Rare sold their 51% share in Rare to MS, and Nintendo sold their 49% share (I can't understand why Nintendo would by 49% of Rare) to MS, there was no Nintendo-to-Rare-to MS chain.

This rumor is stupid. Bungie's name is worth just as much as the people who work there. MS would let everyone at Bungie quit before selling the company. Being able to slap the words "from the creators of Halo" is worth millions on its own.In a recent interview Bungie (not sure who at bungie) spoke abouthow they wereworking out a way toturn out multiple games at once instead of their standard1 game every 3 years, they also mentioned how they "still loveHalo".Also the idea of "right of first refusal" is just as stupid, because it would still mean MS owns the rights to Bungie's games. Finally, the sheer amount of money involved in buying Bungie from MS would be ludicrous, probably well over 1 billion dollars.

anyone who calls Bungie a "one trick pony" hasn't played the Myth games.

Bungie already had a name for itself before Halo.

what happened M$, i thought you are rich and can buy everything in the world

Considering that they still have the rights to Halo (if this rumor is actually true), they still have the part of Bungie they really want. And Bill Gates could personally purchase Bungie with his daily pocket change if he wanted to, so I doubt this was an issue of MS not having the money.

I don't know, I'm starting to think that this rumor is true.

MS would get what they really want out of the deal - the cash flow of selling all their shares in Bungie to whomever, plus the rights to the Halo franchise, as well as publishing rights to any games Bungie puts out in the future. Bungie, meanwhile, would have the benefit of more creative freedom and would probably make more money as an indepedent developer rather than one that works directly for another big company. Who knows. But I'm starting to think that this is indeed true.

Guess we'll find out for certain soon, eh.

Which conversly means it's at least partly true...

Incorrect. It means it's more likely to be true than your average rumor... otherwise it wouldn't be a rumor at all.

I would question if MS was doing the right thing. I am not sure I am seeing the same vision they are. They should not lose Bungie. I would indeed Think about jumping ship should they lose the one developer that holds my allegiance to the 360.

So whether it's true or not, nothing really changes except a few job titles. Great info.
