This is just getting ridiculous.

Now this is just demoralizing. According to a report in the rumors section of the Feb. 2010 issue of Game Informer (which doesn't name its source) there won't be "any game from the [Half-Life] franchise in 2010." As if that weren't crushing enough, the magazine says it's not even sure there will be a Half-Life 2: Episode 3, postulating that the next Gordon Freeman adventure might be Half-Life 3 proper.Joystiq

I just figured that since the new engine was going to be released with the next HL game that they might do the same as what UT3 did.

Yeah maybe, but its like, I was expecting a new storyline for HL3 and the current story to end with HL2, but with all the crazy plot going on, they could not finish this in one 4 hour episode.. so I hope they are making a full game, after all this time, but I'd like to hear about it.. as far as I know right now, Im still just expecting another short episode and they are just really slow.

If we wait 4 years after EP2 and get something equivelant to EP1/2, blood will be split.

Full game.

What the hell are valve doing? They already have the engine. Hell other devs release 12+ hour mega epics in 2-3 years and these guys take like 4 for a 4 hour episode... Has Gabe Newell moved on to eating developers for dinner? I see no other reason for it.

Both Newell and Lombardihas hinted at a HL2 EP.3 before they start developing HL3.

Ugh... I wish "episodic content" would die a horrible horrible death. And what sucks the most, is that we get to wait the amount of time it takes to make a full game for one that is about a third the size.

After so much time, Half Life 3 proper would definitely be a wise move on VALVe's part.

So Valve makes a sequel to Left4Dead after one year but after almost three years since the release of HL2:E2 there is still no HL2:E3? Come on Valve finish the entire Half-Life 2 story already.

Eh... I don't want episodic content would die, but Valve isn't doing it right. You could say the Bit. Trip series are kind of episodic, and same as all of the adventure games. But I agree with shutdown, if after 4 years the game is as long as episode 2... I would be very mad and sad.

AHHHHHH STOP DOING THIS VALVE!!!!!

Pathetically enough I have yet to beat all the previous Half-Life installments, so I guess some time is fine for me, but considering how great a game it is it pains me to think of beating them years ago and waiting this long for another installment.

What's with people thinking they are making a new engine or "source 2.0" you really think they have been making games using the original Source engine? Right now the latest Source is Source 2009. There will be no "Source 2.0" only Source 2011 or whatever, they just keep on improving it.

You should listen to the developer commentaries on the Half-Life/Left 4 Dead/Portal/Team Fortress games. The people at Valve are very talented(Yeah...) and know what they are doing.

Rumor. Rumor. Rumor.

Just a rumor. I think the game will release this year. Since Valve has released nothing, my guess is just as valid as GI's.

DirectX9-era technology can only take a developer so far. Eventually, they will need to make an entirely new engine. They keep "improving" it by adding newer technologies on top of the original foundation. There are just some thing about the Source's architecture that won't be compatible with new things.

For one thing, it definitely needs some work on the handling of weapons. I played the L4D2 demo last night, and despite it looking great, the weapons handled like crap. I don't play many shooters these days... but the handling definitely felt like 2004 and not 2009. That and it is 2010... we should be seeing legs (and in the case of women, breasts) when we look down.

Why would they make a game solely for money? They already use their own engine that's from 2004. I'm sure that saves them a lot of money. :P Not to mention that their games sell like crazy.

Holy hell! Why are people accepting a blatant rumor as fact?!

It's a rumor, people. Based off of pure speculation... based of the fact that Valve has only given us a few concept arts. Which means nothing. We had NO info on L4D2, and then AT ITS ANNOUNCEMENT, we got a release date. I guarentee we'll get the SAME thing for Episode 3.

Episode 3 will be revealed WITH its release date. I predict it's this year, but I could be wrong.

Out of curiosity, what does that mean "handling definitely felt like 2004 and not 2009". I just played L4D2 yesterday and besides the ridiculously frustrating reloading the weapons handled fine.

You don't need a new engine to change how weapons are handle... And how did they handle like crap? They are missing some animations, but nothing major, and it has more to do with how they were made than the engine itself. And about the looking down part, it was present in the first L4D, I don't know why you think that has something to do with the engine, just the game itself. Modern Warfare 2 doesn't even show anything when you look down. The engine didn't start out in DX9 either, I'm fairly sure it's upgradable in that aspect as well...

Valve is fail, seriosly how long do they need to make a 4 hour long episode? They already have the engine, so what's taking them so long?

I really don't care about Half Life anymore, it's taking way to long and I lost all interest in the game/story. I am sick of waiting years and years and then get a 4 hour long game.

Valve = Lazy

Whether it comes this year or not, it doesn't change the fact that Valve seriously failed on the whole episodic content plan.

Seriously Valve wtf??? The source engine isn't getting any less dated. It is now two years since the release of Ep 2 and we haven't even had an official announcement about Ep 3. What is taking you so long? Half Life 2 was release 5 years ago. Wasn't the whole point of the episodes to span the long gap b/w HL2 and HL3?
