First Risen Review (Surprisingly good!!!)

Ok, like many of you, i assumed this game would such, but a popular german mag has reviewed the game 86!!!, what do you guys think?? what score do you think it will get here?? I love WRPGs, so i might give it a shot :P

As long as the 360 version is still on track here in the states, I'm all in on this one, as I have been following it for awhile. Strangely, Gamestop no longer shows the 360 version on their site and will not accept preorders for it in store. Whenever it does get here (hopefully October 2nd), it is one I will certainly be picking up.

I just hope that the multiplatform development hasn't cause any compromises. Although, in the videos made by devs they've been playing on kb&m so there's still hope for this game..

That's good to hear, I'm sure it will get slack here for voice acting and whatnot, but anyone who digs open world action-RPGs shouldn't brush it aside if it's anything like Gothic, and by the looks of it it is ..hopefully just more polished.ManicAce

Even with all the technical problems I consider Gothic one of the best RPG series ever. I expect Risen to be just as fun and immersive as Gothic I and II.

I just have 2 questions. Do you make your own character ala looks and such? Does it have a choice system? Yes to either of these question will keep me interested.

No, you can't change the initial look of the main character, but you can wear diffent equipments and learn different skills. If Risen plays like Gothic, then you'll have tons of choices to make. The choices/consequences in Gothic games was amazing, as the NPC AI.

Isn't it sad that Gothic's AI is better than the Radiant AI in both Oblivion and Fallout 3? And Gothic was launched in March 2001!

Yes, it is. It's ridiculous how everyone forgets the bad things you have done in Fallout 3 if you just give a bottle of purified water to the poor people.

Unfortunatelly RPG is like wine. The old ones are the better ones.

I might check it out. Fable 2 left a bad taste in my mouth WRPG wise, but maybe this will help alleviate that somewhat.

Sweet this game is on my my "buy used" list but it may get promoted.

Well can't say I'm the biggest gothic fan, III was definitely an ordeal to play, but it has a proven formula and fundamental mechanics. Will look into this though. It is PC exclusive correct? and does anyone have a release date? Dead-Memories

I'm aware of the game, but have been waiting for some reviews on it.... I'll get it, if I like what the reviews say about it. Whens the release date? Cuz I think once Dragon Age: Origins launches.... nothing else is gonna get much play time for a while.

I'm keeping an eye on this one, nearly sure buy for me, I loved the Gothic series, particularly its open world, choices an consequences (sure there were a lot of bugs but still fun), if its anything like that I'm sold.

The 360 version has been delayed until next year here in the US. Looks like it will be awhile before I get to play it, as 2010 so far is packed for me with games I am anticipating more. PC gamers are still on track for October 2nd, though.

I hope the 360 version will be good. Because my pc kind of sucks. Anyway i have had this game in my sights for a while now. Which was based purely on my enjoyment of the gothic franchise.

Well considering that Gothic 3 got a 7.6 back then with all the bugs it had, we can expect this one to be at least 7.6. IT shows the quality of the gameplay this series have.

it seems more like Fable in its art which i somehow like, but again i am not a fan of these kinds of RPGs.

Me likey, Kinda reminds me of Morrowind.

If you've never played Gothic series:

-It is not morrowind

-it is not oblivion

-it is not Fable

-it is not Final Fantasy

-is is not a kiddie game

gothic series are geared towards the 18+ crowd, unlike the aformentioned games. They have a huge following in Europe, specially Germany.

I've played 15 hours for PC. I'd say it's worth a buy if you love RPG's.

The game is difficult.

It makes you find your way with little direction, especially in the beginning before you learn more. It doesn't hold your hand. Which is nice.

Combat is simplistic, but you have to be tactical and defend yourself. It could be deeper, and I guess this could be a con for some, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Graphics are nice, but it could be a tad bit brighter. I guess PB will be issuing a patch for this.

It's very much in the same vein of the Gothic titles, but I enjoy this a tad bit more honestly. It still has its fair share of problems, but nothing like Gothic 3.

I'll also be checking out the 360 version, which I imported, so I'll be back to report on that one and post more thoughts on the PC version as I get deeper into this huge adventure.

Nothing like Too Human.

It's much more of an unforgiving old-school RPG. How much enjoyability and mileage you get out of Risen depends if you dig european flavored RPG's.

Does anyone know how well optimized the interfaces are for consoles, both any quest logs and inventory interfaces? I think a bit of minor streamlining for those interfaces on the console versions is often overlooked by the makers of these sorts of games. The X-box version of Morrowind and Two Worlds on the 360 both suffered from completely minor problems that nevertheless hurt the pace and playability of the game. I spent hours looking at the exact same text over and over again in Morrowind because of an unorganized quest log, and the same goes for an unorganized inventory meant more for mice than joysticks. It can't be hard to add a table of contents for a quest log, or categories for items to an inventory screen. I hope they also feel free to ignore the vocal minority of gamers who whine when developers give people an OPTION to fast travel to already discovered places, as if putting an optional feature in a game forces you to use it. That feature made games like Oblivion playable for people who wanted to spend time fighting, questing, and gaining skills rather than riding around endlessly through already experienced territory.
