Can we count Persona 4, because that's an AUTO Win, but if not :

I guess ME, and Valkyria Chronicles...

with a shout out to Tales of Vesperia and Disgaea 3.

huh? That's not an RPG, that was a Platformer (Unlike the other games in the series)...

Sure, it had RPG elements (I have it), but it was a Platformer.

Well..... Technically it was. You level up, do more damage, get more health, collect items. So it was a Realtime RPG.

I suppose so, I guess it comes down to is the game a PLATFORMER with RPG elements, or an RPG with Platforming elements. Same goes for ME. (Action game with RPG elements, or reverse.).

Persona 4 is the best RPG this generation IMO but since the PS2 doesn't technically count. Valkyria Chronicles followed by The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion.

GEEZUSS! (Nice fun blog to read) :)

Look, I agree with taht Blog, however, I find it way to hard to define the industry against the tide. I do agree, that Zelda is an RPG, BUT the Gaming Community doesn't, so then it comes down to definitions.

When we start mixing that stuff up, people can say that :

MGS4 was their RPG of the Year, or GTA4. It gets kind of crazy.

I think puzzle solving, character growth and exploration is a bigger part in Super Paper Mario than the actual Platforming part. Yeah, it's 2D and yeah you jump, and yeah, it looks like Mario 3, but it's hardly the same. I can't think of a single moment where there was a tricky jump. You know what else was a 2D Sidescroller? Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Zelda II, Faxanadu, Battle of Olympus, Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys, Cadash, Popful Mail, Odin Sphere, etc etc.. RPGs have evolved over the years, it's kinda nitpicky to pingeon hold the genre with Final Fantasy or Oblivion standards don't you think?

Two very fine examples of their respective genres.

Many of the games you listed aren't considered RPG's by the mainstream, like Castlevania SOTN, etc. I do agree, pigeonholing can be troublesome, but the standards are getting to hard to define as well.

Indeed it isn't. If Zelda is a RPG then Halo is a RPG. There is a reason we have other genre definitions like "action adventure" and "shooter" because in almost every game you "play a role," yet very few do you actually "role-play."

I've been playing RPGs since 1988. Zelda is an RPG and is the MOST important Action RPG ever made. I would like for you to debate that last claim.

Zelda is action-adventure, not role-playing. Just because you "play a role" does not make it a role-playing game. Like I already said, if Zelda is a RPG then Halo, Doom, Forza Motorsport 2, Shadow of the Colossus and Grand Theft Auto are RPG's.

Haha. Again, there's nothing that makes Zelda an RPG, absolutely nothing, they have nothing in common and share no similar definition. JRPG maybe but not even that.

Because you don't role play, if you go to everyone zelda file every single game would be the same.

What does age have to do with anything? A role-playing game is where you can mold the game world around your own personal character which you can specify traits and personalities. Zelda is an action adventure, every time you go through the game the experience is exactly the same, all the enemies are in the same places, all the bosses and dungeons are the same layouts, and the story concludes in the exact same way every time.

The best example of a "role-playing" would be the PnP version of Dungeons & Dragons, where the world and everything in it is entirely customizable and up to those playing. It is only limited by the players imaginations.

You sound like a History Revisionist to me. Did you live through the actual history or not? That's why I want to know your age.
Are you old enough to remember any of this:

What makes a Zelda game an RPG is non-linearity, character growth, skill building, etc. I'm not saying it's deep. RPGs have progressed beyond the D&D rules. Just because games like WOW, Oblivion and Fallout are hot now doesn't dismiss ****c and important games like Zelda

His age is irrelevant, he is obviously old enough to know what an RPG is. Zelda is an Action adventure game with slight RPG elements. Like I said before, if you would look at everyone's zelda saved files you would see the EXACT SAME THING, there is no actual role playing.

Wait... which Zelda has non-linearity, character growth and skill building? I'm guessing the answer is Link's Awakening but that is the only entry in the entire franchise that I know of that isn't defined better as an action adventure... and asking my age in response to my argument is an ad hominem.

Just because you don't live through history doesn't mean you can't go back and play games that came out decades ago. Zelda is as much a role-playing game as Halo, Shadow of the Colossus and Doom. Games like the Ultima series were far more important in the development of modern role-playing games than Zelda ever was.

Zelda isn't really all that non-linear, there is a world, and at any point in the game you always have one goal at a time, e.g. find a temple and retrieve the artifact, sure you can explore, but you're still bound to heavy restrictive laws. There's no character growth or skill building in Zelda? We must be playing different games, in all the Zelda I've played, you gain items as you proceed through dungeons, that is NOT skill building, play a D&D game if you want skill building, there we are talking about a very complex and deep system. How can you say RPGs have passed beyond D&D rules? Do you know that D&D is still developing at all times and that they are releasing newer versions of it year after year? D&D still has the best, deepest and complex system of all RPGs out there, computer/console RPGs (not Zelda) are NOTHING compared to D&D.
