The numbers are finally in, and Sony's highly anticipated handheld PS Vita seems to have underperformed majorly at retail.

Famitsu reports that the system sold 321,000 units since its launch, which is less than half of the rumored 700,000 shipment. For comparison's sake, it did manage to outsell the PSP's launch window numbers (166,000), but failed to outdo even the 3DS (which sold 371,000). The situation is further excaberated when one considers that the 3DS only had an inital shipment of 400,000, and that it launched in February, which is the driest and slowest month for video game hardware and software sales in Japan, compared to the Vita, which launches in December in the frenzy of the holiday season.

The PS Vita launch numbers are very worrying. They spell a situation of panic for Sony, and they cast a shadow on the continued viability of dedicated handhelds as a source of revenue and a market.

The full numbers will be reported this Wednesday when Media Create reports its hardware and software numbers. As of right now, it is highly possible that the 3DS outsold the Vita the week of the Vita's launch, a situation that Sony will find highly undesirable.

SOURCE

EDIT: It has been confirmed that Sony shipped 500,000 units of the Vita, not 700,000. So this means that the Vita managed to sell more than 50% of its initial shipment, which is impressive.

I was trying to compose a coherent OP here :P Those are good numbers, but they seriously pale before the 3DS. And this is worrying if you consider that the Vita has a much stronger launch lineup and launches in the holidays. I think the 3DS might end up outselling the Vita in its own launch week.

I'm losing faith in Vita's ability to outperform the 3DS with every passing day.

It really is starting to look more and more like a DS vs. PSP situation.

Died before it launched. But personally, I think 350k is great. I only predicted 250k myself. But hopefully Vita sales drop off post-holiday season and then we can get that price cut and we can all enjoy Persona 4 together.

I still see it selling like the PSP. More than 50 million, at least. Sony might have to take a hit on the prices and take more losses than anticipated though. That, and/or include on board memory/bundle with games/discontinue the 3G model.

That's pretty close to what the 3ds sold at launch.

There's no problem here.

Sony's already making a loss on every Vita unit. The last thing they will do is go even more into the red.

That it sold less in the best month of the year. That's the problem. It's December, you would have expected it to at least sell more than the 3DS (the launch of which was a clusterf***, compared to the Vita, which Sony has handled so well).

okay not to make you look like an idiot but the 3DS sold well during the driest month of gaming, meaning there really wasn't anything on the market for people to buy so might as well get a 3DS and the ps vita almost reached 3DS sales during the month where consumers are spending like crazy for the holidays?........... yeah i don't see the problem here

This is true too. Holiday season means that attention and intent of purchase is divided. However, would you not say that the fact that more people are buying the 3DS than are buying the Vita is worrying then?

If it outsold the Psp at launch, and the Psp has sold upwards of 50 million units, that puts Vita in a good position.

let me ask you this, which is cheaper, there goes your answer, also this is just 2 days, can we wait until after the holidays to claim ownage here. also i guarantee you sony isn't trying to beat nintendo in the handheld market, probably wanna take away some of their market share, also it beat the first psp sales so i don't see how it underperformed. Did sony say, OUR EXPECTATIONS ARE TO BEAT 3DS SALES IN THE FIRST 48 HOURS. naw, i don't think so

Two things:

1. The PSP launch only tracked one day of sales...the Vita launch tracked two days

2. Nobody bought the PSP at launch because Sony had never released a handheld before...people aren't just going to rush into things that are untested. Now that Sony has more experience and built up consumer trust with handhelds, the Vita would obviously sell more at launch.

Problem? :?

All I read is that it almost doubled the Psp's numbers.

theuncharted34

That it sold less in the best month of the year. That's the problem. It's December, you would have expected it to at least sell more than the 3DS (the launch of which was a clusterf***, compared to the Vita, which Sony has handled so well).

Considering how expensive Vita is, and how it almost doubled the Psp's numbers, there's no problem.

If it outsold the Psp at launch, and the Psp has sold upwards of 50 million units, that puts Vita in a good position.

Again true, but the 3DS ALSO launched at the same price. Basically, I still anticipate the Vita selling upwards of 50 million units. All I am saying is that the next few months will be a bit bumpy for the Vita, it won't be smooth sailing.

Was Japan more favorable to PSP or the DS? it seems Japan is more conservative with their purchases.

Two things:

I'm just saying these numbers aren't BAD -_- Not great, but the Vita's not "Teh doomed!" It's going to be every bit as successful as the Psp if not more.

Sony, the Ps3 and the Vita have been the target for SW non stop for the past month. (This isn't targeted at you Chaz)

More favorable to the DS, but more favorable to the PSP than any other system in history except for the PS2 and the DS.
