Oh shit..
Oculus is dead in the water. I don't see socially defunct hermits signing up for a FB-account to play on/with Oculus. Sony will save gaming once again with Morpheus.
....and this is the worst part and more than likely will end up being the case. You're going to need to be a member of FB to use it. **** man.
There is absolutely no reason to believe that. No device in the world requires a Facebook account to use that isn't built for Facebook itself. That would kill the hardware. That's pure baseless paranoia.
Facebook isn't run by idiots. They aren't going to sabotage a 2 billion investment by doing something as asinine as that.
What gets developed for Oculus Rift is down to the developers, not Facebook. People Developing for VR dont work for Facebook. I just hope social media extensions arent going to be interfering with my immersion.
You said it right there. Even Zuckerberg has talked about how immersive the Rift is. Why would they ruin the experience with that kind of stuff? The simple answer is they really aren't going too. They'll take advantage of it in other ways but it really seems they are diversifying more than anything.
If anything Zuckerberg is a geek and wanted to see Oculus survive so he invested into it to ensure it gets all of the support it needs to succeeded.
Investing this kind of money into a product means they need it to be successful to get that kind of investment back. It's a long term thing. They need to keep options broad and not limit the hardware or software in any way if they want that to happen. Markets have to develop around it and Facebook wants to be at the center of it. By injecting needless social media integration they'll ensure the demise of the Rift and lose that investment.

I hope not, because the last thing I want to do is be forced to sign-up to use it (which I would, as Star Citizen I'm GOING to experience with the Rift). I'll believe it when I see it.
@Wasdie: If everything turns out like you're hoping, then yeah. It's still weird but life moves forward. But Facebook is a publicly owned company with a recent public history of needing to demonstrate its ability to monetize on their success, and just dropped 2 billion on this. You could be right, but that doesn't sound like the start to too many open source platforms.
It also makes the timing of the news about OR distancing itself from the ITA out of nowhere at least a BIT more ominous.
@Desmonic: What's great is when the Oculus Rift is successful there will be competitors. So really the Rift could die in 5 years and I won't care. If VR is successful (and I believe it will be) the competition will pick up and we'll see better headsets by other companies. By the time Facebook could really do anything to harm the Rift there will be plenty of other options.
I can see Nvidia making their own, I can see Samsung or ACRE getting in on it. Razor might. Logitech definitely will. It's going to be great.

one can only dream since the golden goose has just sold its ovaries for crack money.
either that or the Morpheus headset isn't asl doomed as lemmings said.
but the NVidia headset would be dope
Boy, Persson (Minecraft) is Really Not A Fan:
“Facebook is not a company of grass-roots tech enthusiasts. Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.”
Persson said he believes VR can do great things with social – but he doesn’t want to work with social, he wants to work with games, and as such he will be looking to oculus Rift’s competitors – at Valve and Sony, among others.
“I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven’t historically been a stable platform. There’s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me,” he said,
“And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition. I have the greatest respect for the talented engineers and developers at Oculus. It’s been a long time since I met a more dedicated and talented group of people. I understand this is purely a business deal, and I’d like to congratulate both Facebook and the Oculus owners. But this is where we part ways.”
i hate facebook a lot.
i was apathetic about the rift.
not really sure how/if this will change anything for me at all. 4k ftw.

already loads of others making vr headsets, it can't be that difficult, sony made one
Such animosity towards facebook for absolutely no reason by a lot of people. It's weird that THEY bough OR but as a company Facebook hasn't really done anything awful or bad in the past.
Seems like people just hate Facebook because it's everywhere and for how people use it or act on it. Facebook the company aren't inherently bad

its just fisheye lens vision with a binocular like slider for viewing,
I think its the headtracking technology that has vr mired in obscurity at the moment,
and oculus already has the headstart.
man, **** facebook, im deactivate my account, shit was going down since twitter.
and im tired of the targeted ads, so what if I shop at tigerdirect and newegg?
why show me flyers when I order stuff from their weekly/bi weekly?

Tell that to the european parliament, it's not like in the usa you can just make a movie of someone and post his ass on the internet. Here , that's jailtime.
Facebook lobbyist are all over the place when privacy laws have to be voted. Facebook keeps everything they have of you even after you close down your account, they say you have a right to know what they have of you but it takes a lot of pressure to get that data.
Of course , if you're 16 now you don't know anything else, privacy is a human right . Once you would have privacy you would realize why you felt so restless, because you didn't have any privacy.

haha I would settle for a food replicator first.....would love to have one of those.

By the 3rd movie (Matrix Revolutions) it will get super crap.
Twitter is better than Facebook anyways.

How many people do you honestly believe actually hate Facebook for these reasons?
You can hate for these reasons, nothing against that but anytime I ask why people hate Facebook they come back with a very stupid reason

Palmer Luckey (main dude at Oculus) is answering questions. Of course nobody believes him on the internet because **** FACEBOOK > logic.
Cool thanks
"Q: Okay, question really all I want answered since you didn't go into detail or even really speak about it.
What will this $2 billion in investment allow you to do with VR that you could not achieve before?
Follow ups...
Is it going to rapidly expand your employee base? Do you worry that it might hurt the company culture or efficiency of a smaller team?
A: We have not gotten into all the details yet, but a lot of the news is coming. The key points:
1) We can make custom hardware, not rely on the scraps of the mobile phone industry. That is insanely expensive, think hundreds of millions of dollars. More news soon.
2) We can afford to hire everyone we need, the best people that fit into our culture of excellence in all aspects.
3) We can make huge investments in content. More news soon."
Very cool
@misterpmedia:
so what exactly is wrong with FB buying Oculus Rift since I yet to here legit reason
Lot's apparently people are already jumping ship lol First Notch and minecraft VR now others:
Uh oh.
Looks as if Hermits will have to hope Valve stays true.
It's ogre
Now when you try to play Mirror's Edge and Skyrim with the Oculus Rift, it'll require you to sign into your Facebook account
Your wall will be clogged with feeds from the games you're playing and everyone will know you use the Oculus Rift to roleplay a strapping Khajit fisherman
@misterpmedia:
Who the hell is that? And really minecraft oh well that's really a big lost so where's the killer games on Sony VR
Who knows, it's in dev like OR was. Games were being devved on it by devs, now some don't want to. Hardly a good look is it? But that's what's happening. Sorry.
