EA COO: Nintendo to become a software company just like Sega

Thought this was interesting, former EA COO believes that Nintendo will become a software only company in the near future ( no more hardware ) to make for other systems ( just like Sega )

Nintendo's hardware manufacturing days are numbered, according to industry veteran Bing Gordon. The former Electronic Arts chief operating officer told GamesIndustry International in an interview published today that Nintendo may follow Sega in exiting the hardware business.

"I think Nintendo's already on track to become primarily a software company," Gordon said, when asked about the challenges the Wii U faces at launch this holiday season.

Gordon compared Nintendo to Sega, a company that once had a foothold in the hardware market, but ultimately shifted to developing software exclusively. He said Nintendo will remain viable as a hardware manufacturer so long as its creative talent--specifically Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto--continues to come to work.

"We saw that with Sega back in the day; Sega made some missteps and became primarily a software company. Nintendo hasn't really made missteps, Nintendo probably has better creative talent and better leadership now than Sega did," Bing said. "It's got the most robust business model, the best creative talent; Miyamoto's still the best in the business. So far, when Miyamoto makes a perfect game, in his career he makes games worth $200--it's worth buying a system for."

sega made 4 failed systems before finally going under. Nintendo is not even close to that. They had like one 17 years ago and thats it.

No. Regardless of there home consoles, Nintendo it the only company in the Handheld market with anything worth owning, so even if they stop with home consoles, they'll just move on to supporting there handhelds even more, rather than turning 3rd party.spike6958

Not going to happen...Iwata has stated time and time again, that if Nintendo goes down, then so does there games. No hardware, no software, no nothing.

I don't know... I've been hearing this since the N64... Of course, Nintendo can't afford to fail as hard as Sony did this gen, because they don't have other activities to compensate. They also aren't in MS' shoes, who can pour endless money in a system even if it's struggling.

In the end though, I'd give them at least two more gens (counting WiiU)... MS and Sony have been pathetic enough over the last five years, to let the underdog survive for some time.

I don't see that happening anytime soon. While the Wii-U may not reach Wii levels of success, I do think it will reacha level of success none-the-less. If I end up being wrong though, then NIntendo still has its handhelds.

Would be nice to play Nintendo games without having to deal with their weak hardware and horrible controls.
