Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know the DS is insanely popular. It lives up to its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance, churning out plenty of good games, not always graphically impressive, but fun for months none-the-less. Now developers are beginning to learn how to utilize the DS to its full potential. The main point I want to make in this post is, the DS is catching up. I only realized this partly after Zelda: Phantom hourglass, which uses the whole DS card's memory, something older DS games did not. When I stumbled onto Tales of Innocence for the DS, it really got me thinking.
The tales of...series is one of my favorites (ever since tales of symphonia), and after viewing some trailers on Namco's website, I thought "How much better can it get than this? maybe on the psp?" Well I went to Ign, watched Tales of the World since I had an excuse and was jealous. If you watch both, the thing I notice is that the lighting in the psp is definetly brighter, but overall, the environments and battle sequences arent that different. The cutscenes are Anime, so their equal there.
I think that developers are just realizing this, with games like ASH, and hopefully will still be great games not counting graphics. Dragon Quest IX was put on delay even longer because they said they could make some MORE enhancements to it, after Zelda set a new standard. Now I've looked at the FF7: Crisis Core and I know that it does look better, but its a much newer game, as is Tales of Innocence. What will Nintendo's next handheld have to offer?
Anyone that has a DS can tell you that the games are fun (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing), addictive (Jump! Ultimate Stars, Metroid) and challenging (Castlevania's, Pheonix Wright), and covers a wide range of genres. Its the handheld version of the ps2. Its reinvented handhelds.Soon, I guarantee that DS games are going to be looking a lot better, or not to keep the old school feel (contra, metal slug). Here are the links so you can agree or disagree, I mean this IS system wars.
Tales of Innocence: http://namco-ch.net/talesofinnocence/video/tgs_pv.php(you should watch all 3 videos)
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology http://media.psp.ign.com/media/836/836506/vid_1987776.html
I know both games are great (even though ToI isnt out yet) and Im not saying that the psp doesn't have its moments, but I find the DS much more enjoyable, especially with Wifi games. I spend more money actually buying games for the DS than I do for the Wii. I hope that this is insightful to somepeople. I know its really long, and most people aren't going to read this since its so fricken long.
