October 19 2008Tokyo, Japan –Despite less than stellar reviews, subpar sales, and the departure of series mastermind Tomonubu Itakagi, Tecmo has announced a third entry into the Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball series for release on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. No date has been set for the release.
"Tecmo is thrilled to announce a continuation of the DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball series. The new game will continue the storyline of the previous two entries and will release for the exciting next generation machines. All of the characters from the previous entries will appear in the new title. We are also happy to announce that both versions of the title will have a unique one handed control scheme," said the company in a statement.
The company declined to answer questions on the content of the title or on the influence of Itakagi, but did confirm that Team Ninja, the division responsible for all the previous Dead or Alive titles is the developer.
"We felt it was time to continue with the series and this new control scheme will breathe new life into the franchise," said a spokesperson for the company. "Adding the one handed control scheme not only adds a unique experience for players, but also allows them a hand free for other things such as taking a drink. We have also made it compatible for right and left handed players so that no one will be excluded."
The Xtreme Volleyball series of games is an offshoot of the Dead or Alive series featuring the female fighters in island volleyball competition. The series has been both criticised for its depiction of scantily clad players, and lauded for its realistic depiction of volleyball and high quality graphics.
"The last version of the game really tanked in stores, but the unique control scheme and the multi-platform release may give Tecmo a hit, and a hit is what they need right now," said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. "They haven't had a whole lot of global success of late and the situation with Itakagi has hurt their reputation in the gaming world. Tecmo really makes games for hardcore gamers and among them Itakagi is a celebrity. It will take a lot for them to regain that good will they once had. I think this outside the box thinking may do just that for them. They just better hope that people will play the game for longer than fifteen minutes at a time."
The company also stated that the title will be available in a standard and collector's edition. Included in the special edition will be a mini volleyball and a bandana.
"The volleyball will not be useable in a real game," continued the spokesperson. "The bandana will be useful for taking care of sweat and other things during extended gaming sessions."
