Realistically, the PS5 won't be 4K 60fps so it's not a choice. Sony is probably going to shoot for that lucrative $399 price point, and you're just not going to get 4K 60fps for that much. I think they can achieve 1440p 60fp pretty nicely at $399. What do you think, SW? Is it going to happen? Or would you rather prefer 4k at 30fps.

More than anything I want the PS5 to be red. I've never seen a red console before and think it would be something special.

Well can’t they have so that the developer can choose what to have their game run at or better yet put the option to change it in the game’s settings?

Yeah, I'd just like to see performance be the goal and decide resolution from there. Wouldn't mind it at all if PS5 had a lot of 1080p or 1440p games.

But that's just the dream man, companies are gonna do what they want with the hardware. If 4k is still the big buzzword when PS5 comes around, that's what many devs will chase. Seems like 30fps is the acceptable standard for most console gamers, and in turn, most console devs.

4K 60fps isn't as hard as people make it out to be. My GTX 1070 does fine on most games on high at 60fps with some dips AA is just a killer at 4K. The PS5 should have at least that power, its the CPU consoles always lack.

This would be most ideal, and I can see it becoming the norm. Just offer modes that let you choose between performance or image quality.

60 fps, even if it's 1080p that's still fine.

1080p with higher polygon count, more objects, good AA trounces 4K with low polygon counts.

Too much focus on graphics and framerate. Most gamers don't care about the vast majority of things folks complain about on this forum. This forum will have a casual reader believe that all console games look awful and run terrible and all PC gamers are running at a casual 4k at 60fps on ultra. But we all know the reality is far from that overall impression this forum and many others like it gives off.

60fps only for PS5 games. Don't really care for resolutions like that.

60fps next time or seriously, just don't bother. 1440p is fine and actually so is 1080p if the framerate is decent. It's beyond a joke now that consoles are still stuck at 30fps for big games including the $500 multiplat box Xbox One X which adds insult to injury by being allergic to exclusive videogames.

4K/60 would be the best option since TV's are 4K and not 1440p. A 4K/60 machine would easily do 1080 and 1440 at 60 fps for those option.

Realistically, none of those will be a thing. 1080p/60 and 4K/30 will be the norm.

But still being extorted to buy a console for ONE game (I know tens of people that bought a PS4 and play ONLY FIFA) aint healthy...

If that means more microtransactions because they 'need' it, then please just keep using PS4 hardware.

Ps5 should be 1080p 60fps on all titles (and improved visuals on gamea that can) while doing 4k 30fps (with some games 4k 60fps)

I am betting on this one too.. People say that 4K@60 would be easy.. but this gen could not even do 1080 with stabile 30, most of the time.. Of course it has to de with devs and publishers will want to push graphics.. They will step it up I am sure, so 4k at 30 would not surprise me, and the option for the console to do 4k 30 or 1080 at 60 would be really welcome..

You honestly expect this to happen?

People were saying PS4/XBX1 should be "1080p 60FPS minimum! should be possible in 2014" ..... it doesn't work like that.

4k is such a waste, so demanding for a far less noticable increase over 1080p (in comparison to the 420 to 1080 jump)...

Why are people obsessed with 4k?

We could have 4k 60 right now. Devs keeps pushing the GPU/CPU to the limit and reason 30 fps is acceptable.

If people made them do 60 fps it would happen. Visuals would take a hit, but it is all relative.

I'd be happy with 1440p/60fps.

4K/30 is underwhelming to me. When I play on my PC if I can't get 4K/60 with high/ultra settings I don't even bother. I dial things down to 1440p to get ultra settings with high framerate. 1440p with Ultra settings and 60fps and above is always better than 4K with medium settings or 30fps.

Honestly though, 4k is fucking nice. So damn clean looking. But it's pretty low on my list of gaming "priorities". Already have a 4k capable gaming PC and just don't care for it. Until I can get max settings and 100+hz refresh rates along with 4k out of a single card, I'll continue to play at lower resolutions.

Performance > pushing graphics settings > pushing resolution is how I look at it. Currently I can max out newer games at crazy high frame rates, so I'm fine with that.

But yeah, for now 4k is a waste even on PC. And for consoles it's only going to limit overall asset and rendering quality along with performance, for the sake of a cleaner image.

There's no reason ps5 shouldn't be able to do 4k 60fps when it's released in 2+ years. It should be at least 10 teraflops with a muuuuch better CPU. Better RAM and more of it also. SSD @ 500GB or 1TB should be the norm then also, not that it affects performance, just saying. PS4 specs and what it can do has been pretty impressive for a 4 year old machine released at $399. Then 3 years later Pro increase PS4 from 1.84 to 4.2 teraflop, slightly better CPU and RAM for $399. If Xbox One X would of spent a little extra on the CPU, nearly every game would have been able to be 4k(or close) and 60fps.

4K TV's can downscale to 2K right? 1080p TV's can upscale to 2K right? And 2K monitors would be 2K.

But as has been mentioned, 4K/30FPS is the PS5, likely another console i'll be skipping.

@joshrmeyer:

Yeah, the hardware they'll be able to pack into a console price range a couple of years from now should be pretty nice.

But of course with a new generation comes the urge to push the overall visual package of games, not just the resolution. A PS5 pushing current games at 4k/60 should be no sweat, but the latest and greatest stuff in the near future? Somethings gotta give and it'll more than likely be performance to take the hit with most games.

Same deal with this gen, people assumed 1080p/60 would be a standard, obviously that didn't happen as pretty pictures sell games more than framerate does.

Indeed. to me 4K has a bigger impact on TVs/Movies because of the pixel density shows off far final details in a camera, than what is currently *possible within performance reason* to achieve in games... its impact on games currently is absolutely minimal. I imagine it also benefits large TVs compared to Monitors anyway, when you are closer it really ain't that noticable.

The best thing about 2k on my monitor has been the screen space, the visual fidelity is next to unnoticeable.

G Synch and 144 FPS (when I can... which admittedly with a 970 GTX aint common.... luckily most Shooters/games that benefit are not that demanding) feel incredibly smooth and do effect gameplay.

I still play Team Fortress 2 on and off, re-formated my pc a few months back, re-installed TF2, thinking "Wtf why is this so unresponsive?" Framerate was capped at 60FPS... after 2 years of being use to 144 solid.

lol yeah man. It's funny how 60fps is so heavily touted, when it's really like eh, that's the bare minimum I want to see. Depends on the game of course, but once you've become accustomed to 144hz on first person shooters? Yeah, it's impossible to go back.

And yeah, I'm in the same boat regarding TV and movies on the big screen. Love my 4k tv for that stuff, wouldn't have it any other way. Games just aren't quite there yet, at least not within reason. Soon though.

4K HDR at 30fps is just fine for the games I enjoy (Uncharted, A.C., Tomb Raider, etc...). Racing, fighting and rhythm games should be 60fps.

What Sony needs to do with PS5 is make sure it is PS4 BC.

I don't mind either way. I just get into the games and don't worry too much about the technical aspects of them. It's nice to have a big upgrade occasionally though, and the PS5 will be my next one.

Most definitely, that's a pretty significant selling point for me. Hate keeping around too many old boxes to play older games. Granted there's not much on the PS4 that I'm into to begin with, but either way I'd love having the option to dip back into its library without keeping the system itself around after the PS5 is out.

But between Sony trying to push PSNow and remasters being all too easy to sell, I'm not getting my hopes up.

@ConanTheStoner: Yeah, I'm not expecting it either. I'll probably be keeping my PS4 regardless as I've been treating it as the system to put my favorite older games on. The remasters allowed me to ditch my PS3 so I've combined two gens onto the one system and include a couple older titles like RE 0, CV and Remake as well as Oddworld and a few others.

We don't need a new gen until Sony is capable of releasing a system that is able to make the best that PS4 Pro and XBoneX have to offer graphically- look like hot garbage. Like when you go back from a PS5 to a PS4 Pro and say "(wretch), how did we even play UC4/UCtLL gross!". That's when we need a new console, not when it'll just be slightly higher fps and a bit shinier. Pro and X and Switch are just fine 'till then.

They will step it up I am sure, so 4k at 30 would not surprise me, and the option for the console to do 4k 30 or 1080 at 60 would be really welcome..

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessss.. :)

Options would be great too.

IMO 1080p with "acceptable AA" and high AF would be enough IF top tier devs push more on stuff like poly/number of objects on screen, physics, maybe even better AI, shaders, lighting, shadow, etc.

I'm partial to pop ins/LODs.

BUT I think the more realistic scenario are:

DYNAMIC RES, 1440p + checker/better AA = the graphics pushers in PS5 from ND, SM, SP, G, etc.

4K 30/60 FPS for some JPN games = usually from BaMco, etc.

Just saw a DF vid of 60 FPS UC and if the PS5 does true 4K/60 FPS on most titles, I expect graphics jump to be even less than PS3 to PS4. Then again that'd probably be the case regardless.

People pushing for more options; keep fighting the good fight. Sadly I think there's just gonna be the compromise of 1440P-4K dynamic + maybe even cb for most.

If you were happy with what you currently have, you wouldn't already feel the need to talk about the next.

They could try for a game library that doesn't consist of interactive movies or old ideas and mechanics with new story.

I'm not sure but Pro and 1X has an artificial barrier that WON'T have their exclusives that'll take advantage of their hardware since they're tied to base PS4/X1. In MS I think they call it "no one left behind" or some marketing slogan.

Pro and 1X feel/are basically "upscaled" rather than "next gen". This might be a smart choice my Sony and MS so that the PS5/X2 could look "better" later on with their own new exclusive titles.

PS5 will give us options because PS4 is already doing that in some games.

You will be able to pick between 1080p/1440p/4K And 30fps60fps.

It's not just about resolution or even framerate (although framerate is more important than resolution) We've seen games on PS4 Pro that are both native 4K and 60fps (although very few but Wipeout Omega Collection is one and Mantis Burn Racing is another).

What will define PS5 more will be next generation graphics & graphic engines where the complexity of every scene is much higher than current-gen and wouldn't be possible on PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, much less the base 2013 consoles.

This is Star Citizen 3.0 graphics. Can't tell if it's running at 60fps but the Youtube encode is only 30fps. Still, even if you play that at 720p, the graphics are still more complex than anything current or mid-gen consoles can handle.

And no, this isn't pre-rendered CG, but running on CryEngine.

Now imagine playing this at 60fps, regardless of resolution (lets be conservative and say 1800p, high graphics settings at 60fps).

Here is a 3 year old trailer of Star Citizen running at 4K 2160p 60fps.

PS5 should be able to do graphics like this at launch, in first-gen PS5 games.
