Poll Do you consider Sony vs Microsoft a great rivalry? (113 votes)

Yes, it’s a rivalry, but it’s a boring one. 18%
It’s one of the best rivalries in gaming. 12%
It’s one sided in Sony’s favor. 41%
Nah, Nintendo vs Sega was better. 29%

It seems like Sony domination right now while Xbox just wants to do its own thing. I miss the great Nintendo Vs Sega where there were clear differences and they tried to one up each other. At least Switch is making things exciting again. What do you think, SW? What are your thoughts on the current state of gaming competition?

At this point is not really a "rivalry". I guess "rivalry" means fierce competition. There is no competition between Sony and MS, there's only a massacre

Better in the old console days.

All platforms are essentially the same now, except Switch.

If exclusivity is all you can differentiate with it's boring, your just gonna buy the platform to play the games and that's the end of it. It doesn't matter which device is better or more cost-effective.

Right now they're in a one sided competition for the title of second best gaming platform, so no.

Back in last-gen, we saw some really good competition between Sony/MS, but not this gen however. MS is just letting Sony winning this gen. But now, we are seeing Nintendo proving to be somewhat of a better rivalry now with the Switch but still, it's not good enough.

I'm sorry but this gen isn't even trying.

I mean, Sony did kinda say they are gonna keep an eye on Nintendo, they see them getting back into the race but they know MS already lost this gen. Even we seen Nintendo's getting more aggressive then they were with Wii U.

Yeah, kinda agree.

I think Nintendo Vs Sega back in the day was more interesting (btw, everyone should read the "Console Wars" book. It's great).

Not at the moment it's a long way from being a rivalry. It's a bit like how man utd v arsenal used to be a big rivalry.

No, because as much as we like to argue over the tiniest of differences here on System Wars, the reality is that the PS4 and Xbox One are far too similar to each other for it to be a great rivalry. The only big difference between the two is that Microsoft's primary focus is online multiplayer gaming and Sony's primary focus is movie-games; whichever of those types of gaming experiences you prefer will probably determine which of the two consoles is your favorite.

The Nintendo/Sega rivalry from the 4th generation or even the Nintendo/Sony rivalry from the 5th generation were far better because in those rivalries each competing console had their own very unique identity and unique library of games. And even the games that they shared in common would usually feel quite different on each platform since the hardware of the SNES/Genesis or the N64/PS1 were so vastly different from each other in many ways.

On a lesser note, Phil Spencer is also way too much of a nice guy to fuel a great rivalry. He needs more ruthless aggression.

The battle in Europe in the 90's was where it was at. Never had the opportunity to own both so stuck with sega all way until the Dreamcast. Still gutted they went a software company. Don't think there will be a battle like the SNES v mega drive.

Best MS console with a year head start can only tie or loose by a little to Sony worst console.. So I wouldn't call them rivalry lol.. Sega gave a better fight with Nintendo back in the days!

No. Microsoft has never been anything but an also-ran. Their first system was at least interesting since it became the home to a lot of Sega franchises after they went 3rd party.

I do worry for Xbox going forward ms are obviously cutting the budget for the gaming division. It doesn't bode well when you see Sony and Nintendo thriving.

Not really, this whole Xbox vs PS rivalry isn’t really a rivalry. Xbox is more of a hobby for M$ while the success of PS means life or death for Sony. Another reason it’s not really a rivalry is because Sony is so far ahead of M$ in gaming that M$ can’t even be considered gaming competition.

M$ tore an ACL this season they’ll be back next season though, hopefully.

Creating new studios is certainly helping their cause but it won't show until the next gen consoles hit the market.

It did and it also outsold 360 every year. It took awhile to catch up because it launched a year late at $600.

snes and genesis were very very different. They had almost entirely different libraries, and were nothing like DOS machines. So every aspect of that was more interesting and gave you a reason to own them in addition to PC

By the end of last gen the 360 even with a huge fail rate that sparked re buys still ended last.

Even that the xbox 360 release 1 full year before the PS3.

Nintendo vs Sega was better for home consoles (though the handhelds were one-sided in Nintendo's favor). They had different games, yet they sold almost the same amount. The propaganda was great and still affects Nintendo to this day. The winner basically came down to who had the best exclusives and made the most impact. Gaming icons were huge during this era.

Sony vs Microsoft is very one-sided in Sony's favor.

No it didnt. At the end of last gen it was stated the PS3 had outsold the 360 worldwide

http://www.businessinsider.com/ps3-surpasses-xbox-360-in-worldwide-sales-2011-3

and I'm talkin about the current gen. Last gen was the only one where MS gave a fight. 2/3 gens were clearly won by Sony and won with a massacre

PS3 was still selling pretty well after PS4 came out in world wide so is obvious that PS3 beat 360 after PS4 and XB1 came out.. Also it took MS best with a year start to give a good fight with Sony worst console.. Lol thats not much of a war!

I don't really see one as ever truly threatening the existence of the other. They may compete for sales, but I can't imagine either of them would every truly be at a loss from a sales/profit standpoint to the point that the company would be in danger.

Namely, you mean Xbox versus Playstation. No, it's not much of a rivalry. Unless you consider a chicken versus a hungry wolf a rivalry.

Well, there was that time the chickens learned of fire and used it to fight off the wolves for the one generation. But, then they got too cocky and accidently set themselves on fire. Providing the wolves with cooked chicken.

Sorry for the fable.

I'm far from having the sales stats.

It was a time I was thinking the PS4 had a major advantage with its exclusive. And now that I have a PS4, I say only Uncharted 4 is very good.

Both c and d, but I picked d.

MS could try to compete with Sony, but they never really reached Sony's level on multiple fronts. Ninty vs Sega was a real battle. Sadly Sony finished Sega off in the home console market though.

It has to be a rivalry. The NY Mets are in a rivalry with the NY Yankees even though the Yankees have won 27 world series titles and the Mets have won 2. It isn't how competitive it is, its how much does it live in people's minds. And fans here and all over the internet spend so much time pissing and moaning about what other people perhaps like that it has to be a rivalry. Otherwise they must admit to being little bitches HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I don't see how it can be called a rivalry when it's not competitive.
