I'm not the biggest SotC fan in the world, but I'm pretty close. It's one of Sony's greatest accomplishments as a narrative and artistic piece, even though its mechanics and performance bore a lot of frustrations. I'm anxious and excited to see which liberties Bluehole has taken in its rebuild.
Now if only others would love Tearaway too.
My only real problem with calling it a masterpiece is that I would then have to dig through my thesaurus to find an adjective for "Ico," which I think is an even better game.
No, not really. I have the PS3 version and tried playing it a few times but I just couldn’t get into it. I tried Ico when it came out on the PS2 and couldn’t get into that either. Watched a couple of hours worth of The Last Guardian and didn’t find that all that interesting either. I’ve come to the realization that Team Ico’s games just really aren’t for me.

Their games tend to be more on the journey than the traditional games in which there is some degree of accomplishment with the exception of Shadow of The Colossus which had the most goal oriented gameplay.
No, I've tried it twice, but the controls kill it for me.
What was wrong with the controls?
Slow, jank, and ultimately feel unresponsive. I get that they're supposedly like that on purpose, but I hate it when gameplay suffers for artistic reasoning.
There were a few moments where I loved it, but probably 60% of the game I found to be an exercise in frustration.

That's how I feel about Resident Evil games. So, I feel you.
lol, I also feel that way about Resident Evil. I can't get into the games because of the controls either.
Remember cows don't like old games, so I will await the hypocrisy that is sure to ensue...
They only like old games when they gotta pay 40+ dollars for it.
Its awesome. Masterpiece, i rarely calling a video game a masterpiece, if ever, because for something to be considered a masterpiece it needs to be on point in every single aspect of it. Even 10/10 games are not. Very veeery rare to consider something as one. I love this game and i think is one of my all time classics but i wouldnt call it masterpiece.
It's a wonderful game in many ways, but it is held back from perfection due to poor mechanics - the game was built around incredibly precise controls and then didn't come with incredibly precise controls. There's nothing worse than failing because the character moves in the wrong way or grip/hit detection fails
This is one of the few Sony exclusives that looked appealing to me.
However, I question any <10 hour long game being a masterpiece.
@UssjTrunks: Why? Seriously why would the length of a game make or break it's ability to be a masterpiece or not? Mario Bros on the nes is a masterpiece and can be beaten in 5 minutes if you know what you're doing. Unless the games length absolutely affects the game in a negative way it shouldn't really be a factor. Like if Shadow of the Colossus only had 2 bosses to beat, you'd have a legit complaint about it, but that's not the case here.
Yes but for its time. I don't think the controls aged well. It was better when I first played it. But I still like it. I'm going to get the remaster/remake.
I'm not 100% certain, but I think the controls have been re-made for the new remaster.
I've read you can change the control scheme and make the button placement feel more modern, which makes it easier and better.
I'm not gonna lie....I never played any version of it. It's a game I have always had my eye on, but never actually bought. I don't see me buying the remaster at launch either. It is a game I will keep in mind during those usually empty summer months though.

No, no, no, they don't like Free BC Remasters and enhanced games given to X gamers.
Now then, if Phony charges them for old games sorta remastered, well then, peachy keen and thank you Phony. lolol :P

The thing is, both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are masterpieces in their own right. Both are fantastic games and were some of the best games of the PS2 era.
I do consider it a great game. However, the same game is on its third release.
Yeah...although I guess that's sentiment that games as a medium have gotten to that age they can now preserve and remind of the classics with re-releases to future generations that maybe never got a chance to experience them back then like we did...Just look at movies - Disney has released Pinocchio for like the fiftieth time now, and because future generations indeed need to experience a classic like Pinocchio. As long as the game industry as a whole doesn't fall under this to the point it jeopardizes the odds of us getting new experiences, I don't think it's a big deal. It looks like they did a good job putting a new coat of paint on this one.
I think re-releases for games should be treated solely for reaching out to newer generations that didn't get a chance to play them respectively during their times...re-releasing games the immediate year after its release to gamer's that already bought them I think is doing re-releases wrong. The average new generation will NOT go back and buy the NES or PSX just to play old games. That is a very niche thing to do and you might as well call yourself a gaming historian if you collect thirty-year-old products.
oh ya, definitely. i played games since the Nes and Dos, but since playing Sotc and mgs2/mgs3 on the ps2 something changed. although i'm playing alot of games i do consider myself a gamer.
yes i will definitely play the remaster.
Yeah man one of the GOAT and still influencing other GOAT. Its looking good but I would like to know what were the suggestions that Ueda sent to Sony and if they implemented them or not. Its great what bluepoint has done but come on Sony spend more money on it.
im only basing my opinion on the PS2 version. i havent played the remasters.
its a great idea not well executed. eurogamer, in a retrospective many years ago, summed it up the best. its a game that leaves amazing memories but actually playing it is quite frustrating.
shoddy performance, sloppy controls and character handling...i remember getting quite frustrated with it at times. it probably would have been better if they moved it to being a PS3 launch title. i think it was a bridge too far for the ol PS2.
but the art direction, the soundtrack, the concept itself, the beasts themselves....yeah the game leaves an impression. but its no masterpiece. the actual gameplay lets it down.
...and now im going to go listen to the soundtrack.
