Did Microsoft always own the rights to the Halo series or did Bungie make a deal during their plan to separate? I was kinda hoping the Halo series to go multiplat but I just learned Microsoft still owns the Halo brand. Anyone know Bungies next project?

I would go out a buy a 360 right now just for Halo Reach but I wont give into the $50 XBL fee.

I'd recommend more than just Reach, I recommend the entire series.

As far as how long Microsoft has owned Halo? They probably obtained the rights after Combat Evolved launch, but I don't know.

If I remember well they acquired the Halo IP when they purchased Bungie. But when Bungie separated from Microsoft, they had to leave the rights to the Halo IP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN9vO_gRzoIIt features Master Chief riding a dinasaur.

And from wikipedia:

Originally developed as areal-time strategygame for theApple Macintoshplatform, Halo: Combat Evolved went through several iterations before arriving at the console first person shooter for which it is recognised.[11]When the developer was bought byMicrosoftin 2001, the game was rapidly finished and became anXboxlaunch title and platform exclusive.

Ignoring it doesn't make it untrue or go away.

No, they didnt always own the rights, but when they bought bungie they probably bought the rights too... Easily the smartest thing they have ever done when it comes to gaming next to XBL...

Yep. Well first Halo was a Mac RTS, then MS bought Bungie, re-shaped Halo to be a launch title, FPS for the Xbox and bought the rights to the whole franchise

I think I read in an old issue of Game Informer (2000 or so) that Halo was at one point a 3rd person shooter for the Xbox, PS2, and PC. But Microsoft aquired the company and turned it into the greatest Xbox exclusive.

Microsoft bought Bungie when Bungie owned it, and now Microsoft owns the IP post break up, so yea they've pretty much always owned it.

So when Halo: Combat Evolved was released, Bungie and the Halo IP was not owned by Microsoft right?

Edit: No, Microsoft bought Bungie wihle Halo: CE was going to be a MAC game. Why would Microsoft invest money in this company and this IP? The only thing Bungie could be known for was its RTS games and it only had a few.

Sorry, if you want Reach, you need a X360.
