I don't think we've talked about this. It kinda came and went.

And Dead Rising has been Vancouver'd for a while now, and a lot of fans are disappointed. Now, personally, I think the first Dead Rising is mechanically poor, but an interesting zombie game. And when they relaxed it in Dead Rising 3, I was happy. Yeah, I know there's peeps out there that were happy to pierce Nick to the wall, even though Nick's alright.

And I know the timer was a big deal. It was. It made for a unique game mechanic that didn't leave the player freedom. It left the player with planning and choice, and that's brilliant. It's just that I'm not a fan of it. **** off, champ. I'm not. Honestly.

And with Dead Rising 4, they threw everything out of the window. And I mean, everything.

Timer? Gone.
Psychopaths? Gone. And don't tell me those "maniacs" are psychos. Get out.
Character boosts? Gone.
Fun melee weapons? Gone.
The camera? Gone. It serves as a weak "investigation" gameplay segment, which sucks.

They quite literally turned this franchise into the most boring zombie game imagineable. Nothing stands out. Lots of zombies to kill? Sure, but that gets boring. Get any old Musou game to get that hunger going. Point is, this franchise has become ridiculously boring. The melee is gone. The zombie threat is gone. The unique bosses are gone. There's just nothing there anymore.

And mind you, I didn't like the first one. I'm not some nostalgia dude going crazy saying the last Dead Rising ISN'T a Dead Rising game. And it isn't. It's just a boring, generic zombie game.

With all the negativity, I'll say this, I like the exo-suit stuff. Beating the shit out of zombies with a large christmas tree is kind of alright.

But thoughts? On the Dead Rising franchise in general, or 4, or Dead Rising 3, which is my favorite. Yes, I said that. Could've done worse.. Like Dead Rising 4.

When it's $20 or lower it will be a tempting buy but the way they gutted everything and made it so there is no difficulty really ticked everyone including myself off to not consider a full retail purchase.

Thoroughly enjoyed the first game and thought the second and third were good games, though lost the sense of wonder I had with the first.

That looks like trash compared to even the second or third. Why gut what actually makes the series unique. They should have stuck with DR3's timing method whereby you can choose how long you want. Removing the weapons is stupid, heck it was one of the main points of the series, everything is a weapon.

I hardly played DR1 when it came out. Loved 2 & 3 even though they were fairly different. DR4 is garbage to me. There is something about removing the timer that ruined the game. Without the sense of any urgency, the game feels boring. Its weird because everything else is still there (combo system, collectables, customization with clothing, etc.). The lack of campaign co-op is also disappointing. I am sure I will finish the game eventually, but as of right now, I have no interest in going back to the game.

Wow, that video... damn. How did they go from an extremely interactable playground with time based missions to....whatever the hell 4 is trying to be? 4 seems actively worse than 1.

Lems whine so much about No Man's Sky being $60 when this game should cost $5 and it's still overpriced. Let it Die it's free and it's better than this crap.

Yeah, this series turned into drivel. The 3rd one lost a lot of its charm, and I skipped the 4th just because of it.

I love Dead Rising, and to be honest I quite liked Dead Rising 3. It had a nice open world, fun vehicles and tons of fun ways to kill zombies.

Everything I heard from DR4 so far sounds eh... not the best. But I still want to check it out one day. I mean I was really exited Dead Rising 3 got a sequel :P

It's an okay game, altough opinions differ as I want to say that I hate the exo suit. The thing takes a minute and it's already broken. Meanwhile there are ALOT of unique weapons for the exo that you can't use for long.

The only issue I resent is how, like many have said, the psychopaths are now gone in favor of maniacs who are easy and seemingly w/o a needed strategy to defeat. None of the prior games were difficult but it is even easier with the skill tree and how easy it is to increase carrying capacity, health, stamina, etc.., The game still feels like a DR game though. Bug-wise is another story. There are times I play and I am literally stuck for a few seconds and can not move and this I have noticed at least once or twice during a chapter.

Dead Rising 1 is the best Dead Rising, and Capcom was too fucking stupid to recognize why any of it worked. They were actually surprised by people enjoying how campy Dead Rising was (because they sincerly thought they were being serious lol), and weren't all that thrilled with the games reception being centered around how Japanese of a take it was on that type of game. So they give it to a fucking western studio that little by little has taken what was a unique video game, and turned it into any other zombie game.

I get that a lot of people don't like the timer, and don't want to play a game like that. Fine, but it was a mechanic that added a lot to the game beyond just mindlessly going around killing zombies. It added genuine tension and thrill to the overall playtime of the game, it gave the leveling system a bit of impact beyond just the usual upgrade systems, and Frank West camp was way the **** better than anything they did with Dead Rising 2 and 3. 2 at least had fun weapons.

I'm not gonna disagree with anyone that hates Dead Rising for its, lets say not very good shooting, and dumb as **** escort Ai, but I'd rather take the jankier genius of Dead Rising 1, over how fucking soulless Dead Rising 3 was. And this looks worse.

I bought Dead Rising 4 when it came out, it was a fun game, wasn't great; fun though. I actually enjoyed the series for removing the timer, I know others who played the series enjoyed the timer as it added a sense of pressure to the story. The psychopaths being gone was a bummer, cause the "maniacs" were nothing great...lol. I disagree with the fun melee weapons though, I did have fun with the weapons in the game, and the crafting of the vehicles too...

The problem with Dead Rising 4 is that it became too easy...No challenge whatsoever and the story was mediocre. I did have fun with the game, but I am a sucker for zombie games, especially open world zombie games. Game did have quite a few bugs and glitches, but overall exploring the area of the mall and Willamette was fun. Eventually, everything eventually got repetitive...If I had to rate the game myself, I'd probably give it a 7/10

This game is a blast. If you keep up with deal websites then you should have notice that this was on sale for like $30 disc and even digital recently. I had no intention in getting this so soon but for the price I couldn't resist and it's well worth it for me. There still isn't a franchise like this and I appreciate it for what it is. If you're looking for a game with emotional drama filled cutscenes, this is not the game for you. Since this is Capcom and Dead Rising is doing well enough, they will continue to make games for this franchise like they do with Street Fighter.

As for the OP, did you even play it yet? If people enjoyed the franchise, I don't see a reason why not check it out yourself, maybe even give it a rental and you'll probably be surprised how fun it is. There's actually answers to some of the complaints:

Timer? Gone. (There's a timer in the multiplayer part but for me, it's more fun with the timer gone so I could actually roam around and discover more things and have fun doing it without a pesky timer)

Psychopaths? Gone. And don't tell me those "maniacs" are psychos. Get out. (There are bosses but yeah having Psychos would have been cool)

Character boosts? Gone. (You could actually upgrade your skills since there's now a upgrade system, why would you need boosts if you could upgrade on top of the Exo-suit & robust combos)

Fun melee weapons? Gone. (Naw, they're still there. There's so many unique weapon combos, whether it's melee, thrown, and range. I haven't even tried them all, I can't wait to try them all. And that's not even including the vehicle combos and Exo-suit powerups. This game takes combat, whether it's melee, range, thrown, vehicle and Exo and added steroids)

The camera? Gone. It serves as a weak "investigation" gameplay segment, which sucks. (I actually use the camera more in this game. It's not weak at all, as it is used to find hidden collectibles and even see in dark areas. There's like no other game that really uses a camera and use it like this, it's a great addition to the game)

My one complaint is that there's no campaign co-op but then again I'm actually enjoying it solo. I could roam around and not worry about reviving a co-op partner. I'm just glad there's a fun 4 player multiplayer. Also that video made it look like the zombies don't or won't hurt you lol that's not the case with my play single player and multiplayer play throughs. If single player seems too easy, try doing the multiplayer in solo mode and good luck in trying to complete everything before time runs out. It's a fun challenge. Anyway, just like other games nowadays, it sucks that things are behind these damn season passes. I'll get the season pass when it's on sale and I hardly buy these DLC things.

I'm enjoying it for what it is, still playing it.....they changed several things but I'm getting what I wanted out of it, which is just mindless zombie fun and wrecking havock in that sandbox. Lot of fun moments and I like how they went the comedic route(mostly) this time. I will say, if you didn't enjoy DR3, don't bother with this one. If you did enjoy DR3, you may very well enjoy this as well but just know they changed a few things about the game. I'd elborate more, too tired now....gonna go to the Scalebound thread :)

I'm actually really enjoying it despite the changes. Overall I'm quite impressed with this one on a number of levels from its graphic fluidity despite the large number of zombie NPCs, and the game doesn't even purge the dead zombie bodies as you're murdering large groups of them allowing you to see the remnants of your carnage as you're playing. I don't so much mind the lack of timer in the game but the lack of bosses is a bit disappointing, but not something I'm going to write the game off over. The trade off is I'm still enjoying it despite this, the lack of pressure to keep moving forward allows me more time to explore and goof off and experiment more with the various combo weapons and vehicles, trying on and trying to collect all the clothing, and I've been having fun doing that. And, I only paid $30 for it, got a discounted digital code from GameStop so I'm not disappointed on value in the slightest.

Overall though I think the lack of timer, limited window to rescue survivors, and lack of bosses, it all comes down to replay value. Past games you couldn't get everything done at once, you had to play to level up and gain more skills and capabilities, increase your carrying capacity and whatnot, unlock more combo weapons and such. You had to replay to perfect your run, it took me maybe 3 or 4 tries in Dead Rising 2 to save all the survivors. I replayed through the first game numerous times yet could never quite get it all down but yeah, just trying to go for the best results requires multiple playthroughs. Here, I doubt it'll have that but I guess we'll see what DLC brings to the table.

My criticisms of the game have more to do with its release. While I actually appreciate the holiday themed game released during the holidays, it was rather horrible in the respect that it released at a point in the season when many of the year's best games are seeing mad discounts. We didn't even see a sale on Dead Rising 4 on XBL until after Christmas, a bit absurd considering the sale wasn't even worth waiting that long for and it happened after Christmas rather than before. And lastly, being that it's a seasonally themed game kind of makes it somewhat alienating to pick up outside the holidays. Overall, as a big Dead Rising fan since the beginning, this is still a must play. And if you're gonna feel bad about it anyways, you can still pick up Dead Rising Triple Pack, which I'll be dipping into next starting with the first one.

The real sin in the gaming community popularity contest though is that this is an Xbox/UWP timed exclusive so people are going to nitpick it to death, going to Steam eventually and possibly to PS4 at the end of the year. Oh I'm sure like Rise of the Tomb Raider it'll get shit on until it's cool to play on your system of preference.

@lamprey263: yeah I noticed the lack of a timer has made me explore stuff way more. Like case 2 or 3 I think, It took me so long to actually finish the main mission just because I was off exploring so much. I'm actually glad they removed coop from the campaign and made it separate, because the graphics engine seems far more robust overall. This is one of those games I will have a lot of fun getting 100% achievements on.

Also, generic zombie game?

I find this attitude prevailing whenever a non-Resident Evil zombie game or non-PC centric zombie game ever pops it head up. Nazi Zombie Army / Zombie Army Trilogy; "generic". State of Decay; "generic". Dead Space; "generic". Evil Within; "generic". Dead Rising; "generic". Ugh. The "generic" reaction is so generic.

I especially find this reaction so funny considering gamers gripe about the state of AAA gaming becomes too stale by always playing it safe. But, just goes to show, you ever draw outside the lines you eat shit for it and the internet is nothing more than an echo chamber of perpetual put-down.

I've only played a very little bit of it so far so I haven't really formed an opinion on it yet. I loved the first game and it's my favourite. The second one was ok but a bit disappointing as well. I really enjoyed the third game but not as much as the first one.

Yeah, that's true but I miss mixing drinks and food, along with those books.

But none of them are as interesting as the stuff in the first Dead Rising. They're cool in a Saints Row way, but you can't even shoot golf balls at zombies anymore. A lot of melee weapons that were present in the first one, are not in the fourth one. It focuses too much on the combo stuff. And leaves behind one of the best things about this franchise: Everything can be used as weapon.

To put it simply, it seems the 1st one was the most inspired by far. It's a franchise I plan on getting into though.

Holy f*ck Dead Rising 4 was bad. You nailed it, man. No Psycho bosses, no sidequests, bad story, phoned-in mech combat, crappy world building, crappy RPG elements, easy as sh*t, without the timer there is no urgency AT ALL.... FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

I really loved Dead Rising 1. I thought the series started to fall off once it got too silly with the combo weapons. I'm in the minority here, but I just thought the serious tone of the first one was a good thing. Dead Rising 2 was good too, but man, the first one was brutal.

F*ck you Capcom once again. IM SO SAD

All valid complaints but it will be addressed in the last paragraph. Who knows what will be in the Season Pass, maybe they'll add things that some people are missing and want, who knows. I on the other hand am enjoying this new game in the franchise. I'm actually roaming areas more thoroughly than any of the previous games because there's no pesky timer. The annoying thing about the previous games is that it seems like you could only do one or the other before the time runs out. But with this game, I'm finally able to free roam an open world game like I want and explore every building and area.

I'm actually level 65 now but I'm still in Case 2 and I haven't even met up with Paula. I'm exploring and collecting every collectible and leveling up before advancing in the story. I cleared the Mall now I'm clearing Main Street. I like playing like this because I can in this game but couldn't in the previous. What level are you, did you complete the game yet, how many hours you put in so far?

Anyway, I mean everything could be used as a weapon in this game too. You could even grabbed parking poles and such with the Exo-suit. Is there a specific regular item you like using? I guess there are people who like using a kitchen pan more than an Ice Sword I guess. I mean it seems like every other zombie game you could use regular weapons, so I don't see anything wrong with these unique combos. That's what make DR stand out. You could actually shoot golf balls or balls in one of the combo vehicles. I feel like the Upgrade System is basically the Books. Yeah mixing food was cool and it was neat how you could throw up. I don't even think they have rotten food or could throw up in this one. I haven't tried drinking a bunch of beers yet. But just like the Books, the Upgrade System makes up for the mixed food boosts because you could upgrade and keep the boosts permanently. It all balances out. Lastly, I mean what could you really do with the camera in the game. At least they added some new things to it so it has more uses than the previous games.

I didn't like the timer concept when I played part of the 2nd game. I also found the mechanics clunky and not fun. But I would love to give it another try someday.

Finished it a while ago.

And there's nothing wrong with the combo system. They just decided to get rid of a lot of melee weapons. I was running into stores only to find out you can't pick up certain melee weapons even though they're displayed. They should've build on the previous entries. Not strip things away.

The peak of this series was the 2nd one, the DLC with Frank West.

I would rather play Dying Light. Much better game. Especially after The Following/Enhanced Edition.

I tried Dead Rising 1 once. It was the most boring game starring zombies I have ever played, and I have zero interest in that series now. And people say that one is the best in the series, LOL.

Always thought eventually I'd find my way to a dead rising game... Outside of a couple hours of dead rising 2 free on xbl, I still haven't gone into any of these games with hype. The timer is a huge turn off for me.

Its like T-eng in lost planet... Wow, sweet game, way to screw it up completely.

The game doesn't feel like it has a soul, there doesn't seem to be any secret psychopaths, they are all hand fed to the player. There really is no gameplay here, its setup to allow players to mindlessly slaughter zombies and find collectibles.

They said they wanted to bring back the core experience of the first game and they didn't at all. The core experience of the first game was using improvised weaponry that in most cases didn't last very long, to get from case to case while being pressured under a timer. The campy story gave it a bit of charm a lot of serious games lack. It didn't take a super long time to play through the main campaign, it was designed around replaying. I think DR is one of the few games that trying to make it "bigger" broke the core experience and instead of realizing, they decided to spoon feed gamers that wanted to find collectibles and a mindless action game.

@freedomfreak: seemed like a quick cash grab but what do i know. havent played it. i do know it came out last month and is already available for 35% off on the xbox live marketplace though.

Dead Rising was always a low tier franchise im not sure why microsoft keeps funding it for exclusivity.

That's not far off from saying demon souls/blood borne are low tier games, why is sony funding it, the difference between fromsoftware held onto their core principles and improved on the formula where, dead rising has slowly lost all its original ideas and devolved into a mindless action game.
