Confirmed from Atari's official twitter page

This teaser trailer shows that this is no ordinary Flashback console. It's possibly a legit new console that game developers can make with. Not sure if it's fake, but the web page is registered to Atari. So far, the new console is being called the Atari Box.

A quote from Armchair Arcade founder

Bill Loguidice: "Just an FYI, this has nothing to do with AtGames or Flashbacks. It's modern hardware."

Bill Loguidice: "To be clear, this is a current Atari product in partnership with a company who is not AtGames. It is not related to any legacy hardware. It's legit."

Rumor has it this next generation Atari console will be several times more powerful than Scorpio and run all games in 4K 60FPS at Max Settings.

Oh god. Not more systems. I already want the existing console setup to die. There is no need for more.

you see the logo in the new Blade Runner trailer, I thought it was just nostalgic throwback

Loading Video...

anyhow, as far as Atari Box goes, see that crap wood finish on whatever that is, that's totally suggesting to me they're doing what Sega and Nintendo have already done, created recreations of their old consoles where the games are loaded on them already, or in Sega's case have the ability to play the old carts, I think that's what they're gonna do, hey and I think they can make a buck that way, which will be good so they won't have to patent troll that guy trying to keep the Tempest vibe alive

but trying to get in a modern console arms race, you need money, Atari doesn't have any, so yeah, I see them doing some retro-console thing here and nothing more

@lamprey263: If you go on their official webpage, they have an email for developers that are interested in making the console. I see this as an Indie Box w/the bonus playing classic Atari games. The makers of the flash back consoles, which made the Genesis and Atari, confirmed that this is legit. If anything, I say this is an Android-Powered micro console that plays indie games.

I got more info from this youtube video

Atari that made the 2600 isn't even the same company anymore. I doubt they make a modern console. That Bladerunner movie is science fiction just like a modern Atari.

They are probably releasing a throwback console just like Sega trying to get some of that Nintendo NES remake money.

I'll be all over this if it's true! I've always been a huge fan of Atari (hence all my Atari avatars). If it's real, I'll own it! :D

And this time, they better make a good E.T game.

Also, E.T game was the only game I have ever had for the Atari 2600 as a very young kid and I find it irritating and tedious for a crappy game.

If this is true, excellent timing, ha! I'd be cool with this. I'm really curious about what this is. They have their IPs. If its a modern console that has interesting games Atari will probably have the best E3 if shown during E3. I don't know what I'm about to see and I'll react to what I see.

Aside from nostalgia, this is extremely irrelevant. If anything, the console market right now is overcrowded with each trying to struggle to find a true identity.

There's no hole in the market for Atari or any other hardware creator to fill, the 50 other consoles that have tried and failed will attest to this.

The PlayStation got an in with the 3DO being too expensive, the Saturn being too difficult to develop for while being mismanaged by Sega and Nintendo not being a market contender for two years. Microsoft got an in because Sega left the hardware business to become a third party software developer.

There's no void to fill.

Hope it's not some bogus Android game console. Also, Atari can't do this alone, they probably have a deal with a much bigger company like Amazon or something to fund this.

No console "offers" exclusive. They just tied down developers to their platform to sell their shitty plastic boxes. Only exclusives that should exist are the ones that would otherwise be impossible to play on different systems.

Consoles live and die by it's games.

As long as this Console gets some Good Quality games (not just 3rd, but 1st party), It'll probably do pretty well. Though someone will likely be left out. Nintendo already has a tough time getting major 3rd Party support merely being a 4th system Developers have to code and make a game for.

Last thing we need is another console in a market where the libraries are already redundant. How much could a new Atari box offer that isn't already on Xbone, PS4, or PC in equal or better form?

I'd still buy it day 1 for the sexy wood grain tho.

@LegatoSkyheart: I doubt this will be part of the big competition, it will have its own games, but I see it as only getting indie games. Don't expect it to be any type of power house.

Some activity from Atari Interactive Inc.

Perhaps Europeans (EU) wanted their own game console platform.

Game console platforms roughly follows the national superpower and geopolitics characteristics

1. USA

2. Japan

3. China

4....... EU? A new superpower???

European machine = Imagination Technologies(EU/UK)'s MIPS64 CPU + PowerVR combo...

Atari has shifted to so many different corporate owners. And hasn't made any good games to note in ages. Along with the PS4 dominance. It will likely be a failure if true. Probably even dead on arrival.

Brand power and recognition, is the only way to convince modern day consumers to throw down money. And Atari's brand power died decades ago.

With PS4 already getting a $250 sale in the coming week. I don't see this thing flying off the shelf during the holidays.

@uninspiredcup: And unfortunately for Atari, if this is really a console. Making killer apps is a lot easier said than done.

Mario and Sonic like IP's that win over the masses are extremely rare. Compared to the sheer amount of video games made in history.

This is great news! A console that will focus on pure gameplay and leave that linear, narrative story telling movie wannabe stuff behind! Finally, a console SW can get behind.

Classic Atari is the kind of legacy games which can't really be appreciated any more. Too simplistic. The old Atari 2600 games were severely limited by both the hardware and controller. I would argue the next gen is the real cut off point for retro appreciation. That's not to say you can't appreciate the arcade games of that era, but on home console? Too many games were just awful. I remember them. Particularly on Atari. You could still get a kick from computers of that era but I doubt there's a market.

If Atari wants to get back into gaming, fine. But they wont make waves dining off a nostalgia that doesn't really exist. No one is hankering for the worst version of pac man, or the confusing Indiana Jones game. Maybe if Atari brings the old arcade machines to the home they might have more success. Get sega in on the deal. I'd buy a machine with outrun on it.
