First that comes to mind for me is in MGS 2 when you realize something up with The Colonel! And then you realize he’s an AI and the true plot starts to unravel. And of course, the “Fission Mailed” meme stands to this day. How about you, SW? When you think of classic moments in gaming, what comes to mind?

I would certainly consider MGS2 to be ultra classic, and the storyline is very relevant still to this day.

The plot twist in Bioshock. Suffice it to say that I didn't see it coming. I almost fell out of my chair. Other than that, Sony's 2006 E3 press conference. Riiiidge Racer, $599 US Dollars, giant enemy crabs, etc. *sigh* good times. :)

I felt a legitimate sense of loss with this.

@SolidGame_basic: I miss Jack as well, but unfortunately, this was the beginning of their end. Hell, just a few minutes after this uproar from the audience, Sony snuck in that online was no longer free.

Yea.. at least Sony gave us PS+, offering benefits like free games and things like that. Xbox Live didn't have nearly as good as the same benefits. But now PS+ is like $80 lol.

@SolidGame_basic: Yeah, I cancelled my ps+ a few years ago. Their original output was pretty good; stuff like Space Marine, Darksiders and Vanquish. Stuff that looked cool, but I wasn't sold. Then it turned into months on end of utter trash. Feels great to say "no more" to something that doesn't deserve your money.

Honestly this thread could be filled with Metal Gear. especially MGS2, which has been mentioned a lot already.

I'd like to add two more moments from MGS4:

Microwave scene

Final Boss fight between Solid Snake and 'Liquid' Snake.

Much of what Bioshock had to offer was pretty amazing. I loved those bat-shit insane characters. Borderlands had a similar quality to its characters. I remember shooting a bad guy with my acid revolver and he screamed "Mummy!!!". Absolutely great stuff.

The moment in Resident Evil 2 (original PS1 version) where Mr X breaks through the wall after you solved a puzzle. Completely unexpected. I ran away like a scared chicken. Then the bastard breaks through ANOTHER wall. I seek refuge in the small interrogation room. Then a licker (lizard) jumps through the window. I sh☆t my pants thrice in only 2 minutes.

Been playing video games for about a 1000 years by now, so here are just a few classic moments...

The first time I played Street Fighter 2 on SNES. Fantastic.

Watching the jaw-dropping graphics in Defender of the Crown on C64. 16 colors at 320p (or was it 160p?) for those who don't know what I am talking about.

Beating Fist 2 on C64.

Accusing the wrong person in Killed Until Dead (C64) and getting shot by the real murderer.

Playing Spy Hunter as a little kid till 3 am.

When I got a Sega Megadrive (Genesis) as a gift and played Castle of Illusion and Sonic 1. I was so happy.

Playing Daytona on Sega Saturn. Flawed conversion, but still an amazing experience.

Four come to mind:

  1. When I "beat" Pitfall by getting all the treasure.
  2. When the Mad Bomber changed his face when you score 10K.
  3. That Tassadar moment in Starcraft (no spoilers)
  4. In Halo 2 during the Battle of New Mombasa, if you go the unscripted route and immediately jump on the scarab. The "Rock Anthem for Saving the World" starts playing... oh, yeah.

Dont know if its been mentioned but changing controller port to defeat psycho mantis in the first MGS....no internet,so i had to go to the local news agent and read a walkthrough in a gaming magazine to get me past that part.

I did the same when i got stuck on Tomb raider 2 🤣

MGS 2 would be high up on the list, but then again, so would MGS 1,3, and 4. The first 4 games were all just phenomenal. Final Fantasy VII Sephiroth scene. Seeing that first Zombie in Resident Evil. The room with the red clock in Silent Hill 2 will forever be etched in my memory. Playing Crazy Taxi for hours trying to beat times and challenges. The first time I played Super Mario Bros 3. There are a ton of memorable moments in gaming for me.

@dracula_16: Before Bioshock released, I remember joking that they would just recycle the plot twist of System Shock 2.

Turns out I was mostly correct, which was disappointing.

Commander Shepard talking to Sovereign in Mass Effect was the surprise moments I'd consider to be classic:
